Loyalty doesn't always lead to the fantasy world you want. Animal Farm, a novel written by George Orwell, based on the Russian Revolution of 1917, is about a group of animals who start to rebel against their owner to form their dream farm. Throughout Animal Farm all the animals have shown a great amount of loyalty since even before Old Major died, they have always listened and obeyed to who they believed was their leader. All the animals believed that if they listened to the leaders, they would get the dream farm they wanted. Seen in the following quote, "They did not know when the Rebellion predicted by Major would take place, they had no reason for thinking it would be within their own lifetime, but they saw clearly that it was their duty …show more content…
Seen in the following quote “Some progress was made in the dry frosty weather that followed, but it was cruel work, and the animals could not feel so hopeful about it as they had felt before. They were always cold, and usually hungry as well.” (Orwell 74) They are seen struggling to even survive with the amount of work they have to do to prove to the humans that they can survive by themselves. All the animals are experiencing this cruel treatment in the attempt to stay loyal to the leaders, who are doing nothing but staying in the farmhouse, resting. Their so-called “leaders” have started to gaslight them into thinking their life right now is the best it's ever been, when in reality it's not. This is proven in the following quote “The animals believed every word of it”. Truth to tell, Jones and all he stood for had almost faded out of their memories. They knew that life nowadays was harsh and bare, that they were often cold, and that they were usually working when they were not asleep.”(Orwell 113) In the attempt to not disobey or contradict their leaders, they have started to believe anything they say, which is deeply affecting their health and
Insight into loyalty and the consequences of violating loyalty is first along with the civilization of Enkidu. Before his civilization "Enkidu ate grass in the hills with the gazelle and lurked with the wild beasts; he had joy of water with the heads of wild game" (63). Not only did Enkidu live with the animals of the hills "he helps the wild game to escape; he fills in my pits and pulls up my traps" (64). The animals of the hills trusted Enkidu. No other man would be allowed to run with these animals, but they accepted Enkidu.
The animals in the book Animal Farm by George Orwell, admire the horse’s, Boxer, extreme work ethic and they follow his lead. However, Boxer is not very smart and is completely oblivious to Napoleon’s wrong-doing which is one of the main reasons for his continuous leader position on the farm. Boxer’s solution to everything is to work harder, and then everything will magically turn out right.
Farmer Jones using a combination of strength, fear and trickery initially dominated the animals at Animal Farm. Despite the animal rebellion, the leaders of the revolution become corrupted by their power and in turn dominate their fellow animals using the same traits. As a result the lives of the animals have not significantly changed. George Orwell illustrates how people’s complacency and ignorance contribute to the rise of dictators and allow themselves to tolerate oppression.
He explains how they are horribly treated by Mr. Jones and his men throughout there short lifetimes by applying pathos. Old Major states that, “...we are given just so much food as will keep the breath in our bodies, and those of us who are capable of it are forced to work to the last atom of our strength; and the very instant that our usefulness has come to an end we are slaughtered with hideous cruelty” (Orwell 7). Old Major uses pathos in the speech in order to get the animals thinking about how cruelly they are treated. It makes the animals feel for one another and get them angry at the tyranny of Mr. Jones and his
Judging from the movie and book, we can also infer that the animals had a miserable life and were tricked out of their freedom. Even though they were free from Jones, they still had to deal with Napoleon . Both the movie and book prove that the animals were not better off with Napoleon than they were with Jones. The animals were still hungry, tired, and miserable, in reality, the only animal who benefited from Rebellion was Napoleon himself.
“Behavior is the mirror in which everyone shows their image.”(Johann Wolfgang von Goethe). This quote explains that we need to behave well, in order to portray ourselves as the good person. Unfortunately some people ignore another's behavior or bad image because they are of high status. It works this way in governments and even schools. In Animal Farm the animals ignore their leaders bad behavior. Animal Farm is written by George Orwell, from England, in the year 1945. In Animal Farm there are some virtuous and some negative behaved animals: the best example of a virtuous behaved animal is Boxer and the best example of a negative behaved animal is by far Napoleon.
In today’s world, people have always strived to create a utopian society. In the novel ANIMAL FARM written by George Orwell, the animals strive to create their own utopian society based on equality and prosperity. Animalism was created to, as like the Ten Commandments, Animalism’s Seven Commandments were rules for the animals to live by. However, similar to God’s rules, Animalism was a difficult concept for all the animals to follow and live by. Secondly, the collapse of Animal Farm was due to the animal’s own intelligence and their ability to fully understand how the farm was being run. Finally, the failure of Animal Farm was due to in large part by the pigs power over the other animals and the greed and desires that the pigs wanted to achieve. Therefore, the collapse of Animal Farm had to do with Animalism itself, the animals, and the corruption of the pigs.
In the beginning of his speech, Old Major preached to his future warriors, “No animal in England knows the meaning of happiness or leisure after he is a year old. No animal in England is free” (Orwell 1). Old Major made the animals believe that all animals were suffering and no animal was free. The generalization
...hip. Then the people realize something is wrong, then unhappiness reaches a critical point and the government is overthrown or replaced by someone who promises “change”. At this point in the novel the animals are still clueless about how despondent they are and will remain to be so until Jones’s original Manor farm is forgotten and the animals are left to think of another rebellion. Because at this point the only thing that is keeping the animals from knowing the truth is the way Squealer always reminds them that things may seem bad but they are better than they were in Jones’s time. And this is definitely not true, if anything the animals have it even worse than before because now Napoleon and Squealer have confused all of the animals to a point where they are blinded by propaganda, and unable to realize that they are no better off than they were with Mr. Jones.
When the Clover and Muriel notice that the commandments of Animal Farm have been changing, Squealer assures the animals that no such action has been done and warns them that Mr. Jones may come back if the pigs did not get enough of their “necessities” for work. These “necessities” for work are merely just an excuse the pigs harness to deceive the other animals, who are not as intelligent, so that the pigs themselves can indulge the human creations that is originally created by animal effort. This endless greed and self-benefitting mindset is one of the reasons why Animal Farm fails to become the utopia, not only Old Major wants, but the utopia that all the animals fought for. In addition, after the Fredericks dynamite the windmill, Boxer, who receives major wounds, is sold to the Glue Boiler only to allow the pigs to “acquire the money to buy themselves another case of whisky” (Orwell 126). Boxer, one of Animal Farm’s most loyal workers is sold to the Horse slaughterer so that the pigs could self-indulge in a case of whisky. This government could not become any more corrupt as to not give their most hardworking subordinate a proper retirement or even an honorable burial. Overall, it is the manifestation of greed and selfishness that drives Animal Farm to corruption and
middle of paper ... ... Another factor contributing to this process, which has not been mentioned in this paper yet, is that animals that were capable of seeing wrongness in the actions of the leaders did not express their opinions publicly, when they had a chance. They did not want to interfere in the affairs of the farm because they thought there would be no use out of their actions. Another reason for their unconcerned behavior towards the affairs of the farm might be that they were merely disinterested in obtaining the power and leading the farm in which they would have been engaged had they asserted their positions publicly.
ANIMAL FARM About 80 per-cent of all the animals on Animal Farm completely followed the seven commandments. The other 20 per-cent of the animals would rarely follow all the rules and they were often treated like a piece of dirt. All the animals on Animal Farm were treated differently according to their social status, where in today’s society everyone should treat everyone equally. The characters in Animal Farm had many diverse characteristics, some of the animals were powerful, stupid, and sneaky First of all, Napoleon is a huge Berkshire boar and he clearly is the most powerful of all the animals. He was able to take complete leadership of the farm because he secretly trained the dogs to attack Snowball. George Orwell writes, “ ‘Never mind the milk, comrades!’ cried Napoleon, placing himself in front of the buckets. ‘That will be attended to, the harvest is more important’ (817).&nb describe Napoleon as a leader, “ ‘long live Comrade Napoleon’ ” (846). All the animals on the farm (no matter what Napoleon did to them) would treat him as a powerful leader and whatever he said they would do. Often Orwell stirs up controversy about the rebellion, “ ‘forward in the name of the rebellion. ‘Long live Animal Farm!’ ‘Long live Comrade Napoleon!’ ‘Napoleon is always right.’
People during many times of their life have struggled with authority, they sometimes never question how it works. People also get brainwashed quite easily, especially if the speaker is phenomenal at speaking. The dystopian novel, Animal Farm by George Orwell is about animals who take control of a farm they live on, so they can be their own rulers. It tells how the animals start to think for themselves and start coming up with rules to live by until a dictator rises to the “throne,” and Animal Farm reveals that people or animals don't question authority as well as not trusting themselves when they feel like something might be wrong. It also reveals that people or animals can get brainwashed quickly when the speaker is very persuasive with their words.
The animals in the book “Animal Farm” hoped to achieve unity, equality. trust/truth, prosperity, better quality of life, freedom and individuality, in terms of the revolution. This was achieved at the beginning of the revolution, which made it a success, but in the end the revolution was a failure. The farm, in many ways, was very prosperous when the revolution began. The animals were given an education, “the reading and writing classes were however a great success,” which made them feel equal to the humans because they were now learning in the same way the humans did.
“….No animal in England knows the meaning of happiness or leisure after he is a year old. No animal in England is free. The life of an animal is misery and slavery: that is the plain truth.” (Orwell,18). Through these words of the Old Major, the dream of the animals is carried out straight forwardly. They just dream of a world with happiness and freedom by changing the above stated ‘plain truth’. Though they succeed at the beginning, the totalitarianism throws the whole crowd of animals, except pigs, into a nightmare. It becomes a tragedy as this downfall of the animal’s dream befalls due to their own kind.
