When animals overthrew the men, the governance of whom had long been oppressing them, they finally broke the chains of perpetual slavery. They no longer had to work extremely hard in the excruciating conditions solely for the benefits of cruel and greedy men, but for the benefits of themselves. They attained the freedom they were desperately striving for. The times of abuse and maltreatment came to its end. In these new hope-inspiring conditions the animals set up to establish the farm in which there would be no injustice and suffering, but it would be the place where everybody is equal and happy. They knew that establishing such farm would be extremely difficult, nevertheless the thoughts of giving in never crossed their minds. They gradually, step by step started to overcome all the obstacles and hardships on their way to prosperity. Those hardships made clear that the pigs were the most appropriate for a position of a leader. Indeed, the pigs were most intelligent, it was them who were guiding the animals and giving effective advises in farming. Undoubtedly, had it not been for them, the animals would have starved to death not being able to solve the problems regarding ploughing and harvesting. Under their governance the farm was thriving, there were no quarrels and arguments, every animal was happy and contented with their lives. Unfortunately, it did not last for long, the society which was supposed to be just, and where everybody is equal, transformed into the tyrannical society, where everybody lived under strong oppression and in total misery. The reasons why this transformation happened are manifold. This paper will show the main reasons of this. As was mentioned above, in the very beginning the farm was favorable place t... ... middle of paper ... ...hing a tyrannical society. Another factor contributing to this process, which has not been mentioned in this paper yet, is that animals that were capable of seeing wrongness in the actions of the leaders did not express their opinions publicly, when they had a chance. They did not want interfere in the affairs of the farm because they thought there would be no use out of their actions. Another reason for their unconcerned behavior towards the affairs of the farm might be that they were merely disinterested in obtaining the power and leading the farm in which they would have been engaged had they asserted their positions publicly. That is why those animals decided to stay aloof without trying to prevent injustices that were happening. These all factors promoted the tyranny to emerge in the society that had meant to be just. When people see any injustices being done, most people would not speak up. In the novel Animal Farm, by George Orwell, this theory is proven on many different occasions. Even when it is obvious that Napoleon (the leader) is wrong, the animals do not speak up. Some possible reasons for the animals not speaking up could be that the animals were never educated to be critical thinkers and to notice anything. Another reason could be that the animals were scared and intimidated by their leader. Lastly, the animals could not have seen anything wrong since all their life’s they always had one leader that controlled them. The animals in the end of the novel never spoke up due to their fears
The actions of the pigs express this theme by starting with good intentions, but slowly becoming more and more like what they were trying to avoid. In the beginning of the story Old Major gives a speech to the animals on the farm, and in this speech he mentions how cruel the humans are. During his speech Old Major uses Boxer the horse as an example when he says “You, Boxer, the very day that those great muscles of yours lose their power, Jones will sell you to the knacker, who will cut your throat and boil you down for the foxhounds.” (Orwell 11). He then proceeds to tell the animals that once they revolt the cruelty will end, and at first it does, but soon the pigs begin to act more like humans. The pi...
After the Animal Revolution the pigs take the initiative and place themselves in charge because of their claim of having higher intelligence. Over time this power begins to distort the basis of their revolt by recreating the same social situation they were previously in. “When the pigs takeover they claim that their goal is to preside a farm of equal animals, all working together to support one another, yet power quickly proves too much for a pig.” Though the animals originally took over the farm to increase the animal’s independence as a whole, because of the pig’s superiority they soon take the place of the humans further limiting their independence.
There is a substantial amount of conflicts that occur in this satirical story. Often these conflicts are between the pigs and the rest of the animals. Only a minute portion of the animals didn’t really have some sort of conflict with Snowball, Napoleon, Squealer, or the rest of the dominating pigs. Overall, Snowball was a better leader than Napoleon, yet the animals reacted differently to Napoleon than to Snowball.

George Orwell’s Animal Farm is a political satire of a totalitarian society ruled by a mighty dictatorship, in all probability a fable for the events surrounding the Russian Revolution of 1917. The animals of “Manor Farm” overthrow their human master after a long history of mistreatment. Led by the pigs, the farm animals continue to do their work, only with more pride, knowing that they are working for themselves, as opposed to working for humans. Little by little, the pigs become dominant, gaining more power and advantage over the other animals, so much so that they become as corrupt and power-hungry as their predecessors, the humans.

This book highlights the dangers of trying to establish an equal society under the ideas of communism, and also has poignant symbolic characters that display historical figures in new light. While the two words are not named in Animal Farm, communism and totalitarianism are two things that are explored immensely in this book. Communism is defined by Webster’s Encyclopedic Unabridged Dictionary of the English Language as: “a theory or system of social organization based on the holding of all property in common, actual ownership being ascribed to the community as a whole or to the state.” In addition, totalitarianism is defined as “absolute control by the state or a governing branch of a highly centralized institution.” Starting their rebellion, the animals were undoubtedly going for the ideal communism, where all the animals were treated equal and had all things in common.
The animals in the book “Animal Farm” hoped to achieve unity, equality. trust/truth, prosperity, better quality of life, freedom and individuality, in terms of the revolution. This was achieved at the beginning of the revolution, which made it a success, but in the end the revolution was a failure. The farm, in many ways, was very prosperous when the revolution began. The animals were given an education, “the reading and writing classes were however a great success,” which made them feel equal to the humans because they were now learning in the same way the humans did.
“It is to be regretted that the rich and powerful too often bend the acts of government to their own selfish purposes.” - Andrew Jackson The animals in Animal Farm by George Orwell face a series of leader, government, and society problems throughout the book. They face the revolution against the humans ruling over them, the leadership change from Snowball and Napoleon to just Napoleon, and the unjust changes that he made to the farm. Strong, long lasting governments, when it comes down to it, is based on the leader and how they respond to distressed situations and how they react when complications occur.
The pigs were first to recognize the power of knowledge and used it to manipulate the other animals. “The work of teaching and organising the others fell naturally upon the pigs, who were generally recognised as being the cleverest of all animals. ”(15) The morning of the hay harvest, the pigs secured their leadership by surprisingly revealing to the other animals that “during the past three months they had taught themselves to read and write. ”(23) With the education, they intend to gain power and therefore, keep the knowledge to themselves.
However, the society in Animal Farm differs from the values of Communism because there is an unfair distribution of property and wealth, which allows the bourgeois class to have more capital than the others. While the purpose of the revolt in Animal Farm was to redistribute the wealth of the farm and to escape from the oppression of the humans, the harsh reality of the paradigm shift after the revolt differed greatly. For example, the fruits of the animals’ labor were thought to have been distributed equally amongst all members of the farm, but instead, they were “reserved for the pigs alone” because “the whole management and
Animal farm, a wonderful book, tells the story of how animals on a farm rose up against the despicable rule of the humans and take control. The animals, tired of how farmer Jones mistreated them, had a meeting lead by old major, a boar, to discuss the injustices they have dealt with.
