Animal rights is the viewpoint that animals have rights corresponding to the way humans do. Animal cruelty is a worldwide social problem that is multidimensional. Animals are generally abused in four major areas: factory farms, in the clothing trade, in laboratories, and in the entertainment industry (PETA.org). Factories often conceal their harmful acts to avoid animal welfare laws imposed by the government. In a household, people isolate or physically abuse their animals, which can also be linked to family abuse. Laboratories experiment on animals for products and treatments, but animals are faced with frightening conditions for long periods often killing those experimented on. In entertainment, animals suffer after being domesticated for our amusement in the forms of media, amusement parks, or facilities (McPhedran). With the help of animal rights activist groups, animal cruelty is conflicted with ideology that animals are titled to their own lives—free of suffering.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is a social movement organization that was established in order to defend rights for animals. Their claim is that animal abuse needs to be stopped universally. There are over 3 million PETA members and supporters that belong to this organization. Using a condensing symbol, PETA constituents believe in the slogan, “Animals are not ours to eat, wear, experiment on, use for entertainment, or abuse in any other way” (PETA.org).
This organization was founded in 1980 by Ingrid Newkirk, its international president. (PETA.org). In 1981, PETA became involved with its first case study that caught the attention of the public. In Silver Spring, Maryland there was an investigation about the experiments being conducted in t...

...tionable because their harsh approach often alienates those whose help they need. They tend to portray all people and corporations to be evil, mass murderers. As a result of these comparisons, people are often reluctant to work with a group that is so severely against them. There are other effective and non-controversial ways to stop abuse and reform the issues that stem from animal abuse. Through better animal cruelty laws, that are strictly enforced and regulated, there will be a better chance to defend animal rights.

Four journalists named Helen Jones, Larry Andrews, Marcia Glaser, and Fred Myers thought it would be a good idea to create a nonprofit organization to help animals that have are treated cruelly by either abuse or when they are left alone. The Humane Society has been helping animals since November 24, 1954(2). Their mission since the beginning has been celebrating animals and confronting cruelty. There are a great number of things that the Humane Society has been doing for the animals, like saving them from people who want to harm them. The list of animals that the Humane Society helps is very long, because they don’t just help the household pets that you might have thought. The conditions of the Humane Society change due to the types of animals
Animal rights can defined as the idea that some, or all non-human animals are entitled to the possession of their own lives and that their most basic interests should be afforded the same consideration as similar interests of human beings. Animal rights can help protect the animals who experience research and testing that could be fatal towards them. The idea of animal rights protects too the use of dogs for fighting and baiting. Finally, animal rights affects the farms across america, limiting what animals can be slaughtered. The bottom line is, there is too much being done to these animals that most do not know about.
I will admit that PETA has done some things that go along with their animal rights ways and have helped many animals in need. Some things they have done to help the animals would be, helping rescue animals who are in need, bringing the mistreatment of animals to the public’s attention, and relocating and finding homes for those animals who have been abused or neglected. This is People for the Ethical Treatment of Animal’s side, However there is always two sides to each story.
Animal rights are practically non-existent in many different ways today. Factory farming is probably the worst thing they can do to the poor helpless animals. Factory farming effects chickens, cows, pigs, and many other animals that are used for food, milk and eggs. One of the biggest organizations against factory farming is called Compassion Over Killing (COK). They go to great lengths to protest and inform people about animal cruelty.
PETA is arguably the largest animals’ rights organization in the world with more than 5 million members and supporters. They go further to say they are against the use of animals in food, clothing, research, and entertainment industries and claim to spread their message through public education, cruelty investigations, research, animal rescue, legislation, special events, celebrity involvement, and protest campaigns. This is all according to their website of course; however, a deeper look reveals another meaning filled with hypocrisy, deceit, terror, and greed.

The issue that has been raging for over many years is if animals should be owned by humans. This mainly concerns zoos, private owners and other facilities that hold animals. The public saw this issue and wanted to address it. Big organizations such as PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) are the ones who are mainly active in this dilemma. The people who are also interested in this issue are those who fit into the category of any side of the argument. Other people and organizations, who are interested in this topic, are zoos or animal wildlife parks. People of the public were interested in this issue, which is why there so many organizations and debates for the issue of animal cruelty. Zoos also promoted interest for this issue in the public, due to the high amount of visitors. There are two main viewpoints in this argument and one in the middle of both. One side is for animal being kept in zoos, facilities or owned by humans in general. The other side argues that animals should not be kept by anyone because they are nobody’s to own. The middle ground between the two points of view believes that only some people and facilities are allowed to take care of animals (basically those who are qualified).
PETA states that, since before the 1920’s there has been animal experimentation. Not until President Lyndon Johnson signed the Laboratory Animal Welfare Act (LAWA) in 1966, animals in the United States had no protection in laboratories, circuses, and zoos over breeding, transportation, housing, feeding, and veterinary care. The LAWA is now called the Animal Welfare Act (AWA). (Williams, and DeMello)
Animals are used today for many sources of protection, food, clothing, transportation, sports, entertainment, and labor, but millions of these animals die each year from abuse. “Most of the reasons that people give for denying animals rights are: animals do not have souls, god gave humans dominion over the animals, humans are intellectually superior to animals, humans are intellectually superior to animals, animals do not reason, think, or feel pain like humans do, animals are a natural resource to used as humans see fit, and animals kill each other” (Evans). It all started in the nineteenth century, when people began abusing animals by beating them, feeding them poorly, providing them with no shelter or poor shelter, left to die if they were sick or old, or by cruel sports. Most of the organized efforts to improve human treatment of animals all started in England. Around the 1800s, there was signs of rising concern for animal welfare in the United States.
“There can be many reason for animal cruelty, like any other form of violence, is often committed by a person who feels powerless, unnoticed, or under control of others. Some who are cruel to animals copy acts what they have seen or that have been done to them, others see harming an animal as a safe way to get revenge against--or threaten-- someone who cares about that animal”. (“Animal… Statistics”) Concerns towards abusing animals have gone up in the past. Although there are not many cases on animal abuse, many have occurred. Abusers are charged with Criminal Animal Abuse and then sentenced to life in prison. Some animals that are physically abused are sometimes rescued by Animal Control, and are taken it to an animal shelter. However, many shelters have not had the space to keep the animals so the workers would have to put them down (Carol Roach). Researchers have shown that the main animals getting abused are dogs, chickens, horses, and livestock (“Animal...
A large amount of information relating to animal rights disseminates from the many websites PETA is associated with. These websites are a key factor to attract supporters and publish information that will help advance its activism. PETA deals with many animal rights issues, some including fair treatment to animals in movies and entertainment, such as Khartoum. PETA is a non-profit organization with a purpose of getting better treatment for animals. The organization has uncovered many illegal projects, which harm animals in doing so. In 1981, PETA uncovered the abuse of animals in laboratories and experiments, which launched the Silver Springs monkeys case. In this experiment, Dr. Edward Taub was cutting major nerves in the arms of monkeys, and teaching them how to use the paralyzed arm. While people argued that this experiment had no value to it, Taub did app...
Some people believe that animal cruelty consists mainly of people actively being unkind to animals. That is not all there is to animal cruelty. There are in fact, many forms of animal cruelty, not all of which are widely known by the majority of the human population. These forms include animal testing, animal abuse, fur farming, vivisection, puppy mills, and many more. While some laws and organizations exist to help prevent animal cruelty, lack of awareness surrounding animal cruelty issues has allowed many forms of animal cruelty to continue without an attempt of being stopped. One of the biggest issues for animal cruelty is the lack of awareness.
For animal welfare and the causes of animal abuse new research has been created. Since animal abuse is fairly a new subject, new research is constantly brought up. In the Bahamas a study was done in the College of Bahamas, and it states that, “…dogs were equally likely to be considered members of the household in homes without domestic violence,” (Fielding 197). Homes with violence show that humans substitute human victims for animal victims. Animal rights activists are trying to break down symbolic boundaries betw...
