Andragogy believes that mature individuals learn differently than adolescent (Bethel University, 2013). Pedagogy is a way of teaching done with adolescents (Bethel University, 2013). Both of these ways of teaching both have a positive outcome but, Pedagogy is due to wanting a good grade or the fear of failure (Bethel University, 2013). Andragogy is for self-development and self-esteem (Bethel University, 2013). Pedagogy is very teacher based and the learner is dependent on the teacher for self-growth (Bethel University, 2013). Andragogy is self-directed meaning you help push yourself to learn (Bethel University, 2013). Both of these learning methods are good but, Andragogy I believe is good for an online environment. The traditional research you can physically go and pick up a book but, with online you don't physically get to touch a book it's all on the computer (Bethel University, 2013). I can overcome these challenges by moving on with the old and into the new. Practice and patience are key when learning new things and new learning styles. Lifetime learners want to become knowledgeable through numerous situations in their lifetime (Bethel University, 2013). I think anyone can be a lifelong learner with determination, self-motivation, and the drive to learn anyone can achieve a lifelong education.There are many attributes that make up a great lifelong learner (Bethel University, 2013). Self-motivation and self-determination make for a great lifelong learner (Bethel University, 2013). Things you learn throughout your lifetime must be put into action by the way you analyze a situation to how you solve a problem is an example of lifelong learning (Bethel University, 2013). You may not think you are a lifelong learner but, every day something is evolving and every day you are learning something new. Andragogy is the way adults learn as opposed to pedagogy, the way children learn. The term was first introduced by Alexander Krapp in 1833. It was later popularized by Malcolm Knowles as he described his theory of adult learning. He had 6 theories as to how adults learn:
‘Strategies for Lifelong Learning’ has been unexpectedly and therapeutically revealing. Throughout our correspondence we’ve shared personal, and professional challenges, and wins. In doing so, I’ve come to realize strengths and areas for improvement, which is why I chose to discuss the second habit from the 7 Habits of Highly Successful People, titled; ‘Begin With the End in Mind’.
Androgogy is the “art and science of helping adults learn” (Knowles as cited in Merriam, Caffarella, Baumgartner, 2007, p. 84). “Andragogy is based on the following six assumptions about the learner: (1) learner’s need to know; (2) self-concept of the learner; (3) prior experience of the learner; (4) readiness to learn; (5) orientation to learning; and (6) motivation to learn” (Knowles, Holton, & Swanson as cited in Khosrowpour, 2009, p. 1528). It’s important for teachers of adults to incorporate these assumptions to be successful. It is also important for the learner to be in a position with these assumptions that is conducive to learning. When instruction does not consider androgogy, it can be ineffective. This paper will examine an unsuccessful lesson, and then using androgogy, will provide suggestions to achieving success in this same lesson.
Andragogy, the art and science of teaching adult learners is a theory most closely associated with Malcolm Knowles. Andragogy unites the student and teacher, allowing a partnership to blossom in the classroom. The teacher has a role that is more of a tour guide and less of the authoritarian. The teacher allows adult students to experience the education as opposed to observe one. Andragogy instruction is not fully content based, but focuses on the process of education, it is not just what you learn, but also how you learn. According to Mr. Malcolm Knowles (1984), five main aspects of Andragogy are:
Andragogy can be understood as a means that adult education must focus more on the method compared than to the lessons. Self-evaluation, simulations, role playing and case studies are the most useful of these types of education, Instructors take on the function of a resource person or facilitator instead of assuming the usual role of a grader or lecturer.
Piaget and Vygotsky’s biggest differences is their assessments of a child’s progression of development. Piaget believes that development is individual; Vygotsky believes development heavily relies on social aspects. Piaget insisted that learning happens after development, while Vygotsky believed that learning takes place before development can occur. Piaget’s theory has four phases; Vygotsky assumed there were no set stages, only three components. Piaget and Vygotsky both believe that development can be a result of a cognitive conflict. They agree that children are active learners; children learn quickly and development declines with age. In both theories, teachers serve as facilitors and guides.
Education does not need to stop at a certain point in adult life. Educators are beginning to understand that older adults still retain the capacity to learn and that there are many benefits that come with keeping the brain active throughout older adulthood. Older adults may find attending university to be inspiring; however it seems that most of lifelong learning for older adults occurs outside of traditional academia. A lifelong learning education model provides a fluid perspective that views individuals as both learners and teachers throughout their lifespan (Feldman, 1991).
When I began this research the meaning of these two words, pedagogy and andragogy, my first thought was my entire education training has been built on pedagogy and what in the world is andragogy. When I started reading about the two, the old question, “which came first, the chicken or the egg?” popped into my brain. Later in my research paper, I answered that question.
Lifelong learning is broadly defined as learning that is pursued throughout life. The European Lifelong Learning Initiative (n.d.) defines lifelong learning as “a constantly supportive procedure which stimulates and empowers individuals to acquire all the skills, values, knowledge and understand they will demand throughout their lifetimes and to apply them with creativity, enjoyment and confidence, in all environments, circumstances and roles.”
There are seven learning styles and techniques. The first kind of learner is a visual learner also known as a spatial, this is when someone prefers using pictures and images to understand a topic. The aural learner also known as the auditory-musical person, is a person who prefers using music or sound. There is the verbal learner or the linguistic person who prefers using words, both in speech and writing. Next is the physical learner also known as the kinesthetic learner, the preference of this learner would be using the body, hands, and sense of touch to learn. Following that would be the logical thinker or the mathematical person, who prefers using logic, reasoning and systems to learn. The social learner also known as the interpersonal learner is someone who prefers to learn in groups and with other people. This type of learning style can be great for student in the traditional classroom setting. Last there is the solitary learner or the intrapersonal person. This is someone who prefers to work alone and use self-study methods. This type of learner would best be fit in the online classroom setting. Knowing what type of learner, you are can be important in helping to improve the speed and quality of learning. It can help avoid putting a student in an awkward position. When I began this exploration, these two words: pedagogy and andragogy, my first thought was here I go again with learning about pedagogy. What in the world is andragogy? To much my surprise, I learned the history behind pedagogy; instead of, the theories that are supposed to work in the classroom. I never heard of andragogy until I started my research; when I started reading about pedagogy and andragogy, a thought entered my brain. The old question, “which came first, the chicken or the egg?” “Which came first pedagogy or andragogy?” Does a student begin to learn from someone else, (pedagogy) or does child begin learning when they are self-directed (andragogy)
Lifelong learning is important because knowledge is the primary source of value in the world today and ability to expand our mind and thinking out of box is the key to attain success. For example to be successful in your career/field you need to be up-to-date with the information and knowledge available in your field and this needs a lifelong learning.
During my time as a student I have been able to develop the way I learn and interact with others to a degree that has also helped me to mature into a better person. I have come to believe that this maturity will help me to develop into a better thinker as well, one that has the patience to listen and take consideration of what others have to say. I consider the act of learning a two way avenue that has to be taken seriously. It is one that involves the teacher, and the protégé. It has been, and will continue to be, my absolute goal as a student to become a diligent protégé and acquire all of learning my teachers have set in front of me. The way each of them have helped me to think about how my actions, and the way I choose to study my lessons and develop as a student, has made a tremendous impact on my life. This impact is one that I will carry into the future as I myself advance in my professional studies.

This is a person who is constantly learning, growing, and evolving, and using the lessons they learn as their platform. In order for one to become a student of life, I believe that learning experiences don’t necessarily always have to happen in the classroom. I have found that through traveling and real life experiences, my way of thinking about life and how things happen has been shaped with a broader understanding of knowledge, rather than just by sitting in a classroom and taking notes. I feel strongly that the traditional model of learning is very effective and that there is much to be learned in this manner, however being able to take what you learn and apply it on a much deeper level through visiting new places and experiencing new cultures and cuisines has helped me develop myself further and become a more well rounded individual.
