When I began this research the meaning of these two words, pedagogy and andragogy, my first thought was my entire education training has been built on pedagogy and what in the world is andragogy. When I started reading about the two, the old question, “which came first, the chicken or the egg?” popped into my brain. Later in my research paper, I answered that question. Pedagogy comes from child and leader. Basically is means teaching children. With this knowledge maybe andragogy did come first. Adam and Eve were the two individuals that began our civilization with children. Therefore they were the first teachers. According to Professor Ozuah he reported a few assumptions: the learner didn’t know or understand his own learning needs, …show more content…
Especially in academic communities that speak French, German, and Russian. In continental Europe, pedagogical institutes can be found along and within university departments. Academic awards in pedagogy are also common in this part of the world. (Peter Mortimore, 1999) I like the way Peter Mortimore describes pedagogy, “the teacher’s role and activity…” He continues to by saying, “any conscious activity by one person designed to enhance learning in another.” (Peter Mortimore, 1999) I see this happening every day around me not just at school, but in the community as well. We all of had individuals in our life that has taught us a skill. That lesson came from someone’s prior knowledge or book knowledge. Later in the twentieth century, pedagogy was defined more of teaching style instead of the type of teacher. Was the style of the classroom more progressive or more child-centered? This led to a more sophisticated approach to understanding the interactions between students and teachers. (Peter Mortimore, 1999) I stop to think about how my teaching has changed over the past several years. When I came out of college, I thought I knew everything about teaching math.. Now, I was so wrong and I was a disservice to those students. I enjoy the interaction taking place in my classroom. Students teaching each other, students teaching me, and me …show more content…
Professor Ozuah mentioned that Edward C. Lindeman wrote lengthily about this subject of andragogy. Lindeman in 1926 stated that the way adults learned was by attacking the problem and thinking of ways to solve the situation not by what academic subject it fell under. Lindeman also stated that adults get self-gratification by solving a problems and coming up with a way to master the obstacles. (Ozuah) I do agree with both Professor Ozuah and Edward Lindeman. I know I feel better about myself when watching my students use inductive reasoning that the height of the building they just calculated with a protractor, straw, and tape measure doesn’t seem correct. Watching them figure out different ways in solving the mystery is music to my
We live in a society where we are surrounded by people telling us that school/education and being educated is the only way to succeed. However, the school system is not up to the standards we want it to uphold. There are three issues we discuss the most which are the government, the student, and the teacher. In John Taylor Gatto 's essay “Against School”, we see the inside perspective of the educational system from the view of a teacher. In “I Just Wanna Be Average”, an essay written by Mike Rose, we hear a student 's experience of being in a vocational class in the lower level class in the educational system when he was supposed to be in the higher class. Both Gatto and Rose give their opinions on how the educational system is falling apart. Today the government is only trying to get students to pass, making it hard for teachers to teach what they want. Students are affected everyday by the school system. They sit there - bored - and do not think that the teachers care, making the
As professionals, pedagogues are encouraged constantly to reflect on their practice and to apply both theoretical understandings and self-knowledge to the sometimes challenging demands with which they are
The term Andragogy is believed to be first authored by Alexander Kapp in 1833 (Nottingham Andragogy Group 1983:v), a German high school teacher. In the book on Plato's Educational Ideas he describes the lifelong necessity to learn. He began the book discussing his childhood and in the latter parts turned his attention to adulthood. Kapp argues that education, self-reflection and educating the character are the core values in human life.
Paulo Freire questions the theory that education is just a basic process consisting of just teaching between a student and teacher in Pedagogy of Hope. The text elaborates on the multiple components of teaching. Freire makes a valid point that the teaching style is an imperative factor in whether the student is able to comprehend the material. He lists four types of teaching styles. The first, authoritarian, the teacher is dispassionate to any input from the student. The second, permissive, allows the student full control of their learning with little to no teacher input. The third, intellectualism, is where the teacher is enamored and overwhelmed by the content of the teaching. The most important of the styles to Freire is dialogic/dialectic, engaging both the student and teacher in the content taught. This style is imperative to the students of today’s society because of the need to be free thinkers able to analyze critically and dialogic/dialectic is the only style with the capabilities to influence the mind.
Any school curriculum should aim at enabling children to be able to think in broader terms, motivate them to want to be more knowledgeable and above all, allow them to come up with new approaches to problem solving. However, more too often teachers tend to limit the students to only the known facts in text books, something which prompts them to remain in their comfort zones. Additionally, the purpose of any formal education is not only to gain formal knowledge but also to gain social knowledge. Different teachers will have different approaches to achieve this. Despite the approach used, in the end of the day, they are expected to have involved and impacted positively on the different characters of children in their classrooms that is, the shy,
Knowles, M. S. (1980). The Modern Practice of Andragogy: From Andragogy to Pedagogy. New York: Follett.
Andragogy is the way adults learn as opposed to pedagogy, the way children learn. The term was first introduced by Alexander Krapp in 1833. It was later popularized by Malcolm Knowles as he described his theory of adult learning. He had 6 theories as to how adults learn:
Androgogy is a word derived from Greek word “Andros” which means “adult man” and the word “ago” which means “I guide”. According to Zmeyov androgogy is “ a new field of human science sciences, one of the new sciences of education that is now in full evolution” (Zmeyov:1998). One has to question this assertion as the origins of androgogy has its roots in the 1950’s and now 65 years later its difficult to see this as a new science, however the importance of this science may have reached a new place of importance due to a rapid changing and competitive society in the 21st century.
The education of children has existed since the beginning of time as parents have taught and molded their children into the young adults they desired them to be. Initial training of children was not in a formal setting, although history would see numerous settings, purposes, and methodological changes. Philosophies of education have also changed through the years as various voices have seemed to grasp the purpose of educating the next generation, thus laying out objectives to reach those goals of teaching children.
In this course I experienced an important change in my beliefs about teaching; I came to understand that there are many different theories and methods that can be tailored to suit the teacher and the needs of the student. The readings, especially those from Lyons, G., Ford, M., & Arthur-Kelly, M. (2011), Groundwater-Smith, S., Ewing, R., & Le Cornu, R. (2007), and Whitton, D., Barker, K., Nosworthy, M., Sinclair, C., Nanlohy, P. (2010), have helped me to understand this in particular. In composing my essay about teaching methods and other themes, my learning was solidified, my knowledge deepened by my research and my writing skills honed.
It provides the fundamental and advanced knowledge needed to improve the well-being of a country. Education is critical to the development of a country’s youth, as the popular saying goes, children are the future. The education received from teachers can either leave a lasting impact or have little or no effect on understanding. The Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation asserted that there is a need for “new paradigms, new practices and new people” (as cited in Holaday et al, 2007, 99). Professional development of teacher is required, as mentioned by the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation, “to build a culture supportive of a new generation of scholar citizens” (Holaday et al, 2007, p.99). Thus, it is imperative that the teachers’ in all institutions in a country receive the best possible training and resources needed to fulfil the responsibilities set before
When I began this exploration, these two words: pedagogy and andragogy, my first thought was here I go again with learning about pedagogy. What in the world is andragogy? To much my surprise, I learned the history behind pedagogy; instead of, the theories that are supposed to work in the classroom. I never heard of andragogy until I started my research; when I started reading about pedagogy and andragogy, a thought entered my brain. The old question, “which came first, the chicken or the egg?” “Which came first pedagogy or andragogy?” Does a student begin to learn from someone else, (pedagogy) or does child begin learning when they are self-directed (andragogy)
Education should be a part of everyone's life. A good education offers something for everyone, whether it be on the simple level or a more complex one. Education should provide provide an opportunity for students to develop a strong sense of creativity, a high self esteem, and a life long respect for learning. Education should help students establish a strong sense of confidence in themselves. A teacher will be one factor that helps a student learn and progress along their way through life. Teachers combine their own ideas with other people's to be able to give a good education to their students.
Education plays a vital role in shaping tomorrows’ leaders. Not only can we become a better nation by acquiring the skills necessary to be productive members of a civilized society. Increase knowledge to actively achieve and meet challenges that can produce changes in which are productive for attaining business innovations, political and economic objectives.
In our culture today, there is a huge emphasis on education, especially higher education. Society basically says the more educated you are, the better off you are. That is pretty much true if you live by the means of society. The basic idea that education, especially a college education, is something that people should pursue even into their adult years is not by any means a new idea.
