Once upon a time reigned a huge kingdom known as Kerajaan Kahuripan. The reigning king divided his kingdom into two to avoid civil war, but he left a message before his death that the two kingdoms must be reunited some day. These two kingdoms are called Kingdom Kediri and Kingdom Jenggala.
The kings of the two kingdoms thereby agreed to arrange a marriage between the crown prince, Raden Panji with the young princess, Dewi Sekartaji in order to unite their kingdoms. Unfortunately, even though the two loved each other so dearly, the young princess’ mother didn’t approve of their wedding. Raden Panji then decided to roam the country in hopes of finding a new future wife for himself.
Raden Panji arrived in a small village called Desa Dadapan where he met a widow who later raised him like her own child in her household. The widow renamed him as Ande-Ande Lumut. One day, he asked her to announce to the whole village that he was looking for a girl to be his wife. A lot of girls came to propose to him, but he accepted none of them.
In the meantime, Dewi Sekartaji succeeded in her attempt of running away from her mother. She then also decided to roam the country to search for Raden Panji. She arrived in a small village where she met a widow who had three daughters named Klething Abang, Klething Ijo, and Klething Biru. The widow took her in and raised her as her own daughter, and renamed her Klething Kuning.
Klething Kuning was assigned the task of cleaning the entire household and taking care of the family’s domestic necessities. She had so many chores to do that one day, she couldn’t take it anymore and broke down into tears. Suddenly, a big crane landed in front of her. Klething Kuning was startled, but the crane said “Do not be afraid, ...

I will marry you and the kingdom shall now be reunited.” They soon got married and the kingdom was reunited once more, and they lived happily ever after.
From this story, we can learn to have faith and trust in the one we love, as stated in the bible verse Psalm 13:5. “But I have trusted in your steadfast love; my heart shall rejoice in your salvation.” Ande-Ande Lumut and Klething Kuning trusted in their love for each other, and they were finally reunited because they never gave up in each other, as should we with the ones we hold most dear.

The starting of the story kept me in suspense: the starting sentence, “No one can accuse Philippa and me of having married in haste” (Fox 1). This clearly brought up the theme of love and marriage. The selection of words by the narrator told that the speaker did not regret his marriage. The defensive tone of the narrator made me to think that perhaps people had criticized his marriage.

Firstly, many people will argue that Nathan and Rukmani’s arranged marriage evolved into a true marriage. Seeing that the two stuck together through hardships, such as the drought, can show a real connection. Their presented love bond also presents itself as a support to get them through the difficulties of the city, such as working together at the stone quarry to get back home. Though this may be a possible conclusion, there is stronger evidence th...
“The Wife of Bath’s Tale” is written in an entertaining and adventurous spirit, but serves a higher purpose by illustrating the century’s view of courtly love. Hundreds, if not thousands, of other pieces of literature written in the same century prevail to commemorate the coupling of breathtaking princesses with lionhearted knights after going through unimaginable adventures, but only a slight few examine the viability of such courtly love and the related dilemmas that always succeed. “The Wife of Bath’s Tale” shows that women desire most their husband’s love, Overall, “The Wife of Bath’s Tale” shows that the meaning of true love does not stay consistent, whether between singular or separate communities and remains timeless as the depictions of love from this 14th century tale still hold true today.
