“Seventh Grade” Academic Paragraph Victor is a boy who tries to impress a girl and gain her attention. For example, Victor wanted to be like all of the other boys and make the girls like him, so he tried scowling and he felt unwise. A quote from the text that proves that my topic sentence is true is, “On the way to his homeroom, Victor tried to scowl, he felt foolish.” This quote means Victor doesn’t think that any of the girls are interested in him as much as they are to his friends, so he thinks that he needs to change his actions to make the girls like him. Another sentence of what this quote means is, Victor feels like when he tried to scowl that it felt very unusual to him and he felt embarrassed. My second piece of evidence from when
Victor embarrasses himself is, Victor was way too embarrassed to go back into class because he told Teresa that he knew French and the teacher heard him. The French teacher knew that he was bluffing so he called Victor out and was very ashamed and embarrassed. A quote from the text that proves that my topic sentence is true is, “Victor was too weak from failure to join the class. He stared at the board and wished he had taken Spanish, not French. Better yet, he wished he could start his life over. He had never been so embarrassed. He bit his thumb until he tore off a sliver of skin.” This quote means that Victor felt horrible, he regrets that he had taken French, Victor only took French because he knew that Teresa was in there, and he just wanted to spend time with her. My second sentence of what this quote means is, Victor felt to ashamed of himself to go back to class because of what had happened in class. He is telling himself in his head that he should have taken Spanish, he feels like his life is ruined and he wants to start his life all over again. In conclusion with these two pieces of evidence, they both show how Victor embarrasses himself and what his consequences are.
In Ron Koertge’s “First Grade”, the author employs indirect characterization and foreshadows the affects of education by describing the speaker’s initial thoughts and beliefs and by writing in the past tense to show how education can limit students’ minds and rob them of their vitality.
The Outsiders S.E. Hinton is about two gangs, the Socs and Greasers, who do not get along and are fighting each other as well as society. Both of the gangs are judged by their appearance, social status, and where they are from. One character that stands out in the story is Ponyboy because he is dynamic with many sides to his personality, and he is the protagonist of the story. Ponyboy can be described as sensitive, smart, and brave.
Sammy is astounded by three young girls that walk into his store in their bathing suits. He follows their every move as they peruse over the cookies and other goods. The first thing this typical nineteen boy recognizes is the one girl’s “can”. But then he goes on to say that this girl is one that other girls seems to think has potential but never really makes it with the guys. One girl though especially catches his eye. He starts to call her “Queenie” because of the way she carries herself and that she seems to be the leader of the pack. Sammy does nothing but watch her every move as they parade about the store. He even daydreams about going into her house with her rich family at a cocktail party. He notices everything about her and thinks there was nothing cuter than the way she pulls the money out of her top. His immature infatuation with this girl is one of the reasons Sammy makes the hasty decision to quit in the end.
Culture has the power and ability to give someone spiritual and emotional distinction which shapes one's identity. Without culture society would be less and less diverse. Culture is what gives this earth warmth and color that expands across miles and miles. The author of “The School Days of an Indian Girl”, Zitkala Sa, incorporates the ideals of her Native American culture into her writing. Similarly, Sherman Alexie sheds light onto the hardships he struggled through growing up on the Spokane Indian Reservation in his book The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven in a chapter titled “Indian Education”. While both Zitkala Sa and Sherman Alexie were Native Americans, and take on a similar persona showcasing their native culture in their text, the two diverge in the situations that they face. Zitkala Sa’s writing takes on a more timid shade as she is incorporated into the “white” culture, whereas Alexie more boldly and willingly immerses himself into the culture of the white man. One must leave something in order to realize how
A hero is someone who is admired for his/her courage and his/her need to help others. Some examples of heroes are Spiderman, Superman, Ironman, Superwoman, and Batman. However, the real heroes are strangers that risk their lives to help others. The book, The Outsiders, shows several heroes that sacrifice their own safety for the greater good. This book centers around the gang, greasers, and the feud between the greasers and Socs. Three characters that show enormous courage and save multiple lives are Johnny, Ponyboy, and Dally. In S.E Hinton’s The Outsiders, Johnny, Ponyboy, Dally emerge as heroes because they all risk their lives for another.
Many people think that reading more can help them to think and develop before writing something. Others might think that they don’t need to read and or write that it can really help them to brainstorm things a lot quicker and to develop their own ideas immediately (right away). The author’s purpose of Stephen King’s essay, Reading to Write, is to understand the concepts, strategies and understandings of how to always read first and then start something. The importance of this essay is to understand and comprehend our reading and writing skills by brainstorming our ideas and thoughts a lot quicker. In other words, we must always try to read first before we can brainstorm some ideas and to think before we write something. There are many reasons why I chose Stephen King’s essay, Reading to Write, by many ways that reading can help you to comprehend, writing, can help you to evaluate and summarize things after reading a passage, if you read, it can help you to write things better and as you read, it can help you to think and evaluate of what to write about.
The story The Outsiders By S.E Hinton is said to be “timeless” because kids can relate to the characters and themes of the story. In my opinion the story The Outsiders is not timeless because kids these days can’t relate to the characters in the story The Outsiders. Kids today aren’t riding in rodeos, roll drunks, jump smaller kids, walk to a stranger's house, or get in a stranger’s car, also they get arrested at the age of 10. Saying the statement “The Outsiders is a “timeless” book “ is an invalid statement. So, Kids today often don’t relate to The Outsiders anymore in many ways.
West Side Story, a film directed by Jerome Robbins and Robert Wise, is a relatively modern adaptation of William Shakespeare 's Romeo and Juliet. As both, the film and text, explore the perceptions of deep-rooted feud between two parties, it also includes the influence and pressure it has on young love. Although numerous similarities are encountered throughout the play and movie, there are distinguished concepts obtaining great difference. However, the two mediums of this tragic love story have three prominent issues of story, themes and characters instilling both similar and dissimilar concepts.
Liesel’ classmates make of her because of her lack of reading skills. Fellow classmates in Liesel’s class mock her because she didn’t read the passage he was instructed to read. This shows Liesel experiences unhappiness because of her lack of reading and the power of words. “’Hey Liesel,' he ... ... middle of paper ... ...
Don’t judge people for their choices they make when you don’t know the options they had to choose from.” Before you have a perspective of somebody make sure you know their backstory. In the book, The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton, there are two gangs called the Greasers and Socs. The Socs have more opportunity and the Greasers get less opportunities. The Socs and Greasers don’t go well together and they have many fights and disagreements with each other except for two people. Cherry, a Soc, and Ponyboy, a Greaser, talk to each other and make really good friends. S.E. Hinton is trying to show the reader that a person's perspective of another person is not always accurate. This is shown by Ponyboy and Cherry realize they are not that different and
This challenge which brewed deep within Victor makes him forget about his own life and leads him into isolation and a complete concentration on project. Blinded by his quest, Victor is unable to measure the consequences of what he is trying to do. Victor returns home feeling frustrated and feeling as though all his hard work had ended in the utmost failure. In addition, Victor feels guilty, realizing that his creation is the cause of his little brother’s death. During this time, he also encounters that an innocent victim, Justine, is sentenced and condemned, a person of great significance, someone like a sister, to the love of his life, Elizabeth. In analyzing the following paragraph, the reader is able to see the difficulty that Victor has in expressing his emotions.
In “Seventh Grade” by Gary Soto the main character Victor learns perseverance threw his embarrassing moments. To start of with, in paragraph twenty four Soto wrote “Teresa,” Victor said automatically. Some of the girls giggled. They knew he had a crush on Teresa. He felt himself blushing again.” This shows that Victor seems to be enamored with a girl named Teresa. Victor's classmates knowing about his crush on Teresa shows that he's been smitten for a while. Later on in the story, “Mr. Bueller asked if anyone knew French. Victor raised his hand, wanting to impress Teresa. The teacher beamed and said, “Très bien. Parlez-vous français?”
The three Curtis brothers, Ponyboy, Sodapop, and Darrel, lived on their own in a small and rugged town in Oklahoma. Darry was never the same since his parents death, and as Ponyboy described, Sodapop was his favorite. Unfortunately because of this, Ponyboy is pushed very hard by his oldest brother, being only fourteen.
In the novel The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton, interactions between Ponyboy and Cherry, two characters with opposing beliefs, illuminate how if two people have different beliefs, it does not have to stop their friendship, because if people pick their friends based on belief, it can make people who are said to be “different” feel like they’re not good enough. When Cherry and Ponyboy first meet, Cherry tells Ponyboy about what she thinks the difference between being a Soc and a Greaser is, afterwards, she says “‘you greasers have a different set of values [...] I think you're the first person I've gotten through to’” (38). This shows that even though they have different beliefs, she still thinks of him as a trustworthy person, and still wants them
