The New Horizons Band captures the essence of numerous generations ranging from young adulthood to senior citizens, who delight in the creation of music. In 1991, Dr. Ernst, a professor at the Eastman School of Music, began the first New Horizons Band (Cole). This musical community consist of senior citizens who currently play instruments or desire to learn the art of a new instrument. Various divisions of this musical community exist throughout the United States, and participation extends over ten-thousand members (“Concept and Philosophy”). In 2006, Don Everett established Rome, Georgia’s division known as the Seven Hill New Horizons Band, and membership expanded to over forty individuals. However, the musical community dismantled in
2009 due to the director’s retirement. Dr. Warfield meet the founder, Dr. Ernst, during his undergraduate education, giving him familiarity with the organization. Likewise, Dr. Warfield’s advisor during his graduate education lead Itowa City’s New Horizons Band, which consisted of various division including a jazz, beginners, intermediate and advanced band. His advisor allowed him to teach the musical community giving him experience working with senior citizens. Dr. Warfield not only noticed a need in the community to outreach senior citizens but also desired to give undergraduate music majors the opportunity to teach others and improve the quality of life of senior citizens. In 2017, Dr. Warfield re-established Rome’s New Horizons Band.
Fetters, Nyswonger and Arduser are all former members of the Raisins, a Cincinnati-based band that was a local success in the early 1980s. In 1983, the Raisins, who then consisted of Fetters, Nyswonger, Rick Neiheisel (keyboards, vocals) and Rick "Bam" Powell (drums, vocals), recorded an eponymous album, produced by Adrian Belew. Adrian's friendship with the Raisins dated back to the mid-'70s, when he crossed paths with them as a member of a band named Sweetheart before being discovered by Frank Zappa. The Raisins album, which was released on the small Cincinnati-based label Strugglebaby, produced a local No. 1 hit, "Fear is Never Boring" (later re-recorded for the Bears' first album), on popular Cincinnati radio stations. Clive Davis, then head of Arista Records, considered signing the band, but the Raisins didn't break through nationally.

The history of the Concert Band and Wind Ensemble will be reflected through a timeline of events, including an analysis of significant events, groups, composers, and advancements. When society envisions a Wind Ensemble, talented musicians, grand music halls, and difficult arrangements typically come to mind. However, a modern-day Wind Ensemble includes a variety of musicians, each with positive and negative aspects. In society today, music is greatly appreciated and accepted. It is considered an honor and a privilege to expose our ears to the music.
Music is magical: it soothes you when you are upset and cheers you up when you are down. To me, it is a communication with souls. I listen to different genres of music. When appreciating each form of music, with its unique rhythm and melody, I expect to differentiate each other by the feelings and emotions that it brings to me. However, I would definitely never call myself “a fan of jazz” until I witnessed Cécile McLorin Salvant’s performance last Friday at Mondavi Center. Through the interpretations and illustrations from Cécile’s performance, I realized that the cultural significance and individual identity are the building blocks of jazz music that create its unique musical features and support its development.
I was born with an inherent fascination for all things celestial. Ever since I was young, I have been staring at the night sky trying to find constellations, or using my juvenile imagination to create my own. My efforts to find, view, and mentally catalogue everything the heavenly bodies have to offer has led me to employ some over-the-top measures, but the most extreme of them all might be the night I stayed awake through the wee hours of the morning to catch a glimpse of a meteor shower. Over the course of an entire year, the memory of this stupefying event is still as lucent and vivid as it was that very night so long ago.
On Tuesday, October 17, 2017, I attended a musical concert. This was the first time I had ever been to a concert and did not play. The concert was not what I expected. I assumed I was going to a symphony that featured a soloist clarinet; however, upon arrival I quickly realized that my previous assumptions were false. My experience was sort of a rollercoaster. One minute I was down and almost asleep; next I was laughing; then I was up and intrigued.
George Helmholtz, as the head of the music department at Lincoln High School, is very determined with his regular students and the gifted musicians of the band. Each semester and year at school he dreams of “leading as fine a band as there was on the face of the earth. And each year it came true”. His certainty that it was true was because he believed there was no greater dream than his. His students were just as confident and in response, they played their hearts out for them. Even the students with “no talent played on guts alone” for Helmholtz.

The Derby High School jazz band was observed as a social group throughout the course of a month. This group consisted of just under 30 people, and all students were chosen to enroll the class upon request of the instructor. A majority of the students were musically advanced and had already been playing for several years. This group was picked to be observed due to the constant stress that students go through and the variety of tasks that were asked of the students.

This is a music lesson plan designed to incorporate technology into music. The idea is to let students learn about their favorite music while learning about today’s technology.
