On March 13th the Rochester Oratorio Society and Houghton College Choir performed at the Hochstein Performance Hall in the city of Rochester. It was a predominately vocal concert with an accompanying pianist. The main performance of the evening was the Rochester Oratorio Society’s rendition of Johannes Brahms’ “Ein deutsches Requiem,” in which vocal soloists Elena O’Connor and Benjamin Bloomfield took the front stage, and Linda Boianova joined Kevin Nitsch as a second pair of hands behind the piano.
In the Baroque period, the performance venue usually was within churches and courts. These locations were not built to suit instrumental performances, and were more of just a venue to perform more than a designed venue like there is in the 21st century. Starting...
“For over one thousand years the official music of the Roman Catholic church had been Gregorian Chant, which consists of melody set to sacred Latin texts and sung without accompaniment” (Kamien 67). The credit for developing Gregorian chant music, also known as plain...
It is the way of life in this age, to search the internet for leisure, research and general amusement. When you are not able to communicate with someone face to face, you pick up the phone. When you venture out of your house for any reason and into populated areas, you are recorded by businesses, photographed by red light cameras, and recorded by traffic cameras. The government has the capacity to watch all of this use. Last year, Edward Snowden’s leaked documents proved it that Big Brother is indeed watching. (Orwell 1)
The circular area in the middle of the theatre is called the orchestra. The music of the orchestra. In ancient Greek times this area would have been used for dancing and where the ‘chorus’ would sing and perform. A ‘chorus’ was. a group of people who would play a major part in ancient plays often describing scenes much like a modern narrator.
Citizens of Oceania are led to believe that every thought or action is under constant scrutiny by the Party, and that, if a crime is committed, the Party will become aware immediately. “You had to live – did live, from the habit that became instinct – in the assumption that every sound you made was overheard, and, except in darkness, every movement scrutinized.” (3). The party is able to survey its citizens through the use of a device called a telescreen, and these telescreens are what makes the Party a nearly omniscient entity, and its citizens are aware of the Party’s omniscience. Consequently, the citizens will censor their thoughts and body language in an attempt to avoid allowing the Party to be aware of these things if they are unorthodoxy (Yeo 53). This type of surveillance is known as panoptical surveillance. However, it is not the only type that is employed by the party. If the party were to make its citizens believe that it is totally omniscient, it would never be able to find a citizen who is in a natural state of being. Therefore, the party allows for some instances in which the citizens believe that they are in complete, unobserved, privacy, and this allows the party to catch citizens who engage in unorthodoxy actions or thoughts (Yeo

Typically, Renaissance sacred music is; rhythmically moderate, melodically plain (similar to a plainchant) and lacking embellishment, the polyphony “mellifluous and homogeneous with a marked lack of chromaticism and dissonance” and scored for vocals only. The Baroque is substantially different: rhythm of dance music, melodic melodies are long and ornate; Polyphony and harmony full of “chromaticism and dissonance, driving each phrase forward in search of consonance and resolution”; and scored for both vocals and many instruments. The Baroque sacred music expresses itself in its sacred music as much as it’s secular music; “The nature of the religiosity is one of unrestrained joy and celebration, and the emotional impact is almost physical in its energy and exuberance” (Greenberg,
Despite all the controversy and disagreements, most of the populous would agree that on an individual level, privacy is our space to be ourselves as well as to define ourselves through autonomy and protecting our dignity. Our interactions with others can define the level of our relationships with them through the amount of privacy we can afford in the relationship. As we age and immerse ourselves into society, we gain a sense of confidence and security from our privacy. A sense that others know only what we tell them and we know only what they tell us in exchange. What we fear is what others can access and what they might do if they knew of our vulnerabilities. Maintaining and keeping our vulnerable aspects private, we develop a false sense of personal safety from the outside.
This is seen with “Big brother is watching you”. Through the use of this message, people are now skewed, feeling they are watched with the signs shown in throughout society. Big brother in itself is a form of surveillance as it is watching “you”, and can always see you, with the posters being shown everywhere. Through George Orwell’s use of telescreens, the effect of tele screens observing the people is seen with “The instrument (the telescreen, it was called) could be dimmed, but there was no way of shutting it off completely” This shows how no matter how much you try to prevent the tele screen from surveilling, it will always watch people. Thus in a effect people must not act negative with “It was terribly dangerous to let your thoughts wander when you were in any public place or within range of a telescreen. The smallest thing could give you away. A nervous tic, an unconscious look of anxiety, a habit of muttering to yourself – anything that carried with it the suggestion of abnormality, of having something to hide.” This leads to people not being able to express their true inner selves, but instead conform to the Governmental Party’s standards. This form of surveillance, in effect, controls people to hide the truth -internally- and behaviour -externally- as is described in the

For instance, his music manifests development of free standing instruments. However, it is tricky to create a relation between music and art just the same way it is hard to relate the Reformation and Counter Reformation period of that time. Additionally, the Council of Trent ruled that, art ought to be free from sin and rather, it should aim at bringing individuals closer to church and to the love of god. However, the music in Baroque’s does not bring individuals closer to the love of God, as it brings them closer to the love of
