In the film, “Who Killed the Electric Car”, by Chris Paine, it gives a closer look into the making and destruction of the electric cars. California has the worst air quality in the United States, so In 1990 California Air Research Board passed the Zero Emissions Vehicle Mandate. The mandate meant that every big automobile company in California had to sell electric cars to continue selling their gasoline powered vehicles. General Motors offered the EV1, the first electric car in the modern era. The film explores the possible reason as to why the EV1 and many other similar models were erased from the automotive industry. Many felt as if auto companies did not promote the vehicle enough, auto companies reported that the electric cars did not
bring in enough profit so it had to be discontinued. A lot of automotive company’s profit comes from the service that is required in gasoline powered vehicles, electric vehicles did not need a lot of maintenance. Oil companies felt threatened by electric cars, most of the world uses petroleum and the thought of an energy using world made the companies believe that it would cut into profit. Automotive companies, oil companies and even the U.S. federal government were against the mandate in California. In 2003, the Zero Emissions Vehicle Mandate was overturned, all EV1 vehicles were repossessed and crushed. Protestors tried to stop the destruction of the EV1, but in the end all EV1 models were killed off. In todays’ society, automotive companies are investing more time into electric and hybrid cars.
Tom Paine’s, A Boys Book of Nervous Breakdowns: Stories, published by Louisiana State University in 2015, is a collection of stories that deals with issues from war, Wall Street, and to inner demons within a human mind. Each story there are the main characters, the background characters, and the care free characters. Each character struggles with some form of sickness whether its PTSD, depression, or suicidal thoughts. Every character is not some hero to change the world but to struggle and survive everyday problems. Whether it’s a soldier from Afghanistan with a girlfriend that wants a normal life, to a Japanese reggae singer that is positive that the CIA killed the infamous singer Bob Marley.
By the early 1900’s, automobiles had become a common sight on the roads of the United States. Edison tried to create an electric battery that could power an electric car. Due to the abundant availability of gasoline, the electric car did not receive the response that Edison hoped for. However, the car battery was a huge success, and still plays a pivotal role in the automobile industry.
It is evident that the electric car faced significant opposition in California during its short life. In terms of political forces, the EV1 was opposed in principle by the United States federal government, who actually joined automakers in a lawsuit against California for implementing the regulations that inspired the development of the electric car in the first place. The US government also discouraged the popularity of the electric car by offering staggeringly high tax incentives to purchasers of large gas-guzzling vehicles such as the Hummer. The California Air Resources Board, or CARB, started the initial incentive to develop the electric car with its zero-emissions regulations for automakers, but in the end CARB was clearly seen to cave under industry pressure and give their support to the development of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles instead.

The book The Christopher Killer is an adequate book, even though it somewhat lacks energy, does not focus on the plotline very well but had an exciting ending.
The front end of the station wagon disintegrated upon impact, sending pieces of debris all over the highway. Alex and Angela’s parents were both thrown into the dashboard and windshield as the engine block raced at them with equal force. As the girls braced during the impact, they were both thrown forward, but were quickly arrested by their seatbelts. They screamed as the car careened and then skidded to a stop somewhere in the nearby farmer’s field, parts of the vehicle’s now twisted metal frame and blown out tires working as an impromptu brake to halt the vehicle.

The story about the Streetcar Conspiracy states that the death of the electric street cars is no accident. Many people believe that, between 1938-1950, General Motors’(GM) conspired with other companies, including Standard Oil and Firestone Tire’s, to put an end to electric street cars. During this time, the electric street car is a popular method of transportation but GM wanted it gone so it could sell diesel and gasoline buses instead. The urban legend states that, GM began purchasing street car lines, advertising a trend away from them, and then not long after shutting them down. Thus, 90 percent of the population is left without transportation options.
The substantial increase in the demand for EV’s came just in time as we are slowly but surely running out of oil. Some estimate that by the year 2040, 35 percent of all vehicles will be electric (Sullins, 2017). An article from the U.S. Department of Energy stated that “Electric vehicles hold a lot of potential for helping the U.S. create a more sustainable future. If the U.S. transitioned all the light-duty vehicles to hybrids or plug-in electric vehicles, we could reduce our dependence on foreign oil by 30-60 percent, while lowering the carbon pollution from the transportation sector by as much as 20 percent (energy.gov, 2014). It’s obvious that gas-powered vehicles have harmed our planet with their emissions. Although EV’s cannot reverse that damage that has been done, they can eliminate, or at least slow down, the inevitable demise that our planet is headed towards. Along with the beneficial environmental factors that correspond with electric cars, there are also beneficial financial factors. The average American spends about $2,000 on gas annually. In the future, charging stations will charge roughly $12.00 for a full charge, which is about 300 miles. This means that the average American will save about $1,400 per year on these specific car
The future American commuter will undoubtedly have to transition from the use of fossil fuels to new alternatives due to the diminishing availability of the nation’s oil resources. How will America respond to this upcoming issue? It is difficult to predict which alternative fuel source America will ultimately choose, but with the premier of Nissan’s electric powered Leaf and other companies; such as Tesla Motors and Chevy, with their electric cars ready for market, the electric car may be winning the race to become the new standard for the gasoline alternative. Electric cars resolve long standing environmental issues, but it will need to maneuver around many roadblocks to become a marketable consideration for the general public. The cost of electric cars, currently on the market, makes them an impractical purchase for the average consumer. If cost is not the growing concern in today’s economy which prevents the consumer from considering this option; they may deny the technological advance due to battery storage capabilities and the inadequate infrastructure in place to refuel and provide for them.
Imagine that you are not that rich or not very poor. The very next day you are driving off the lot with a brand new Model T by Henry Ford. The car that is affordable for everyone to buy and it being safe to drive everyday and everywhere. Henry Ford led to the best car manufacturer in the world. The world knows this company because of how Henry Ford got his company to where it is now, how it is a unique company, and it rebounded time and time again. Ford was and is the greatest car company. They also are cheaper to maintain and cheaper to own then a gas powered car. Even though car enthusiasts dislike the idea of going fully electric, it is a very conscientious choice. Electric cars might seem like a useless form of transportation, but they offer features that help keep the Earth clean.

The electric motor is coupled to the wheels through gears; it converts 59-60% of electrical energy into the wheels. The battery runs the motor which allows the car to move. Electric cars are necessary as they will save money, because electricity is cheaper than gas. Also electric vehicles will help reduce global warming and pollution. However, some people say that electric cars still have environmental costs. The electricity used to recharge EV batteries has to come from somewhere in the world, and now, most electricity is generated by burning fossil fuels. Although electric vehicles are classified as green cars, purists will not appreciate the toxicity of the batteries.
