When you buy food and drinks at the store do you really know what you are actually consuming? Have you ever considered how your food is produced and created? Is it healthy for you? I researched one of my favorite drinks, Welch’s grape juice, to see what is actually the content of it, and where it came from. In 1849, the Concord grape was first cultivated in Concord, MA by Ephraim Wales Bull. His ultimate goal was to create a grape that could withstand cold climates of the Northeast. Using the “fox” grape that was native to the area, he planted 22,000 seedlings in order to study them and watch them grow. Six years later, he found one of the vines he had originally planted, and named the “Concord Grape” after his hometown, and the town …show more content…
The company was booming with business all around. In 1913, Secretary of State served Welch’s grape juice instead of wine during a visit with the British ambassador. Secretary of the navy, Josephus Daniels followed, and completely bans alcohol on his ship. Instead, his soldiers can now only have Welch’s grape juice. In 1945, Welch’s grape juice had become so much in demand, there was a shortage of it. Half of the company’s products were used now in military establishments, and hospitals, and of course, the general public. In 1955, Welch’s grape juice is so well known, Welch creates an agreement with Walt Disney and creates a “grape juice concession stand” at Disneyland. They now have a new target as consumers: kids. The growing industry of organic farming has caught the public’s eye and continues to grow as more and more people switch to all organic foods. There were over 200 studies done at Stanford University School of Medicine. Some of them studied those who were eating organic or conventional food and looked for differences in their health. Others looked at whether eating organic food while pregnant would raise the risk of the baby to develop eczema or allergies. Some even looked at the actual food itself. They were all confirmed irrelevant to non-organic foods. These test came back and revealed that as expected, there were fewer pesticides in organic produce. (Aubrey, Allison, and Dan Charles) Is that important, though? Welch’s use pesticides, when needed, according to the representative I contacted. She didn’t tell me what kind of pesticides they used, as she was not able, but she did, in fact, confirm that everything that is put into the grape juice is very safe. As these test show, it is still safe to consume the delicious
The Grapes is a dysfunctional family who is living in the underprivileged rural area. The household consists of mother, Bonnie Grapes, who is a 54 year old jobless widow; Amy Grapes, the 34 year old eldest daughter among children, who is also still unemployed; Gilbert Grapes, the 24 year old eldest son who works at a nearby grocery shop; Arnie Grape, the younger brother of Gilbert Grapes who is autistic; and Ellen Grape, the youngest child, who is 16 years old and works at an ice-cream parlor. The two members of the family are no longer living with it including Larry Grapes who has left the family and is doing the job of a flight attendant, and Albert Grapes, who is the deceased father of the children; he committed suicide 14 years earlier.
World History, itself is a very well complicated topic to discuss. Many other authors have tried to condense many years of history in one book. Subjected to fail, Tom Standage’s attempt was a success. Instead of Standage trying to sum up the history, he simply based the book upon a single topic, in this case beverages.
Steven Shapin is an expert when it comes to telling people the reality of the situation. In his, article “What Are You Buying When You Buy Organic?” Shapin exposes and explains the truth behind the word organic. He explains that our view on organic is not a reality. The small farms that we picture in our heads are really just big business in disguise and these big businesses are trying to do good by supposedly not using harmful pesticides. Which are supposed to not damage the environment but in reality they are probably not making any sort of difference. Some people care about the environment, while others are buying taste when it comes to organic food but using different pesticides are going to help the taste, only freshness tastes the best.

The family dynamics in the Grape family is close and reflects a general sense of caring. Each character on some level interacted with one another in order to keep the family together. While Gilbert works tirelessly as a caregiver for his brother, he also works to provide for his family. When Ellen is not preoccupied with herself, she also helps take care of her mother. Bonnie, while immobile for much of the movie, runs her family unit from her spot on the couch, and she is included in meals when they bring the table to her in order for them to eat together. Newman & Newman (2012) suggested that the demands of household management stimulate development. As each character is involved in this role in some sense,
In each situation, the sibling is frustrated that Arnie has not been watch properly, but their main focus is on getting Arnie down to safety. Once that occurs then the family goes on with their activities of daily living and it is not a source of tension until the next event. Another example occurs when Gilbert breaks down and hits Arnie right before his birthday party. Gilbert flees the home after this incident occurs, but when he returns home and apologizes to Arnie, he easily forgives him and all is right with the world. They instantly fall into their routine of playing the where’s Arnie game. This shows that Gilbert and Arnie have a good line of communication, and an understanding of one another love for each other. Although, the family lives in a rural environment there are many strengths that stem from being a part of a small community. The Grape family and Arnie in particular are well known in the community of Endora. This familiarity plays a huge role in Bonnie being able to get Arnie
A gene used for pest control, Bt, has infected these foods. You would never know this gene existed because it’s not included in the label. Organic foods are specifically labeled as organic whenever you may find them at a grocery store or elsewhere. These foods are known as being essentially grown in healthy soil, in other words, a soil that isn’t infected with poisonous, synthetic fertilizers, insecticides, herbicides, or fungicides. Although organic foods are more expensive, it is only the result from the frequent crop rotations completed by the farmers during long, hot hours under the sun. Conventional farming methods destroy topsoil whereas organic farming can improve the overall health of the topsoil. Farmers who partake in organic farming view it as feeding the soil and not the plants. Due to this thinking method, a healthy soil provides healthy plants, healthy people and a healthy environment. Organic farming has the ability to feed an entire population and put an end to starvation. The dangerous pesticides that are added with conventional farming are outdated and risky to mankind. Relying on synthetic fertilizers and chemicals are paralyzing our
Louis Pasteur had been studying fermentation to explain why dairy and meat was going bad. He didn’t believe that it was spontaneous but rather there had to be a scientific explanation. When working with grapes and understanding that yeast was the driving agent in fermentation of grapes, he hypothesized that if you can protect grapes from fermentation, that people could be protected from infectious disease.
The Hansen Beverage company (recently changing their name to Monster Beverage Corporation on January 5th of 2012), was a family owned and operated company in the 1930’s, selling freshly squeezed juices to local film studios.
To help keep crops from being destroyed, conventional farmers use many methods such as pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides. Nearly 1 billion pounds of these chemicals are used every year (“pesticides”). Because of this excessive use, some scientists express concern that using artificial chemicals in the farming process could produce unhealthy crops. People who ate it over a long period of time could suffer from degraded health and stunted growth (“Organic Foods”). For example, in 1989, the EPA banned the use of Alar which was a chemical used to ripen apples (“Farming, Organics”). This chemical proved to be carcinogenic after causing tumors in mice after several laboratory tests (“Organic Food”). As a result of these findings there was a dramatic increase of the sales for organic food (“Organic Food”). Another study found that Atrazine (one of the most widely used herbicides in the United States) has the potential of being carcinogenic and reducing sperm counts in males (“Organic Food”). This was further proven when evidence was found that chemicals u...
“More than a dozen similar cases were filed against Coca-Cola in federal courts around the country in 2012,” (phelps 1)juices like Simply Orange are unethical because of the way they are misbranded. However, this is not the first time Coca Cola, owner of Simply Orange, has been taken to court. Coca-Cola was banned in the UK from using the word "nutritious" to describe its Vitaminwater brand after complaints it was misleading given that the drink contains 23g of sugar. said Morton(1). In recent years, California has seen countless copycat lawsuits against Coca-cola for their false branding. A California judge, Judge Fernando J. Gaitan denied Coca-Cola 's arguments
Grape juice contains 79% water & 20 % carbohydrates, 1 % organic acids and, phenolics, vitamins, minerals and nitrogenous compounds. Grape juice gets its flavour from the sugars, organic acids and phenolics, while the vitamins, minerals and nitrogenous compounds facilitates yeast growth and fermentation.
Was orange juice always just here? What is the difference between the different types? Why does everyone like it cold? Is it a sustainable product the way Tropicana is running their processing plant? Are there ethical issues with orange juice production?I began to wonder one day as I was looking in the store, in the orange juice aisle. This paper is a journey into orange juice through the popular Orange juice company, Tropicana .I chose this company because this was a juice that I had grown up with .I hope to be able to answer there questions for myself and you ,the reader.
Red liquid sweet but bitter, the taste leaves the drinker wanting more. It's been a long hard week, and waiting at home for you is a nice bottle of red wine from one of the best local wineries. Little do we know that wine has had impacted the growth in Sonoma County. Throughout this paper we will be looking at the history of wine, and the impact of wine in Sonoma county.
First of all, the main reason that people choose organic food is that people think organic foods have less chemical residue, such as pesticide, and fertilizer. In the article “Organic foods contain higher levels of certain nutrients, lower levels of pesticides, and may provide health benefits for the consumer”, Crinnion indicated that organic foods just had 33 percent of the amount of pesticide and fertilizer residues that found in conventional foods, and conventional foods contain two or more types of chemical residues than organic foods (Crinnion, 2010). In addition, Crinnion used a study of Seattle preschoolers as an example to demonstrate organic foods have less pesticide residues. The study of Seattle concluded that children who ate more conventional foods had six times higher level of pesticide resi...
