The Wife’s Lament by R.M. Liuzza is a poem and is a lament for some kind of loss or sorrow, also known as an elegy. In this case, the poem is a woman's song. She is lamenting the loss of her lover who is possibly not there. The poem is not particular a happy poem. The words “grief”, “dark”, and “exile” indicate this in the first paragraph. The woman that is mentioned in the text, talks about her “lord” alot, which we can infer is her husband. However, it appears as if "her lord" is the same lord that governs the people in this poem. The narrator’s “lord” left his people, including his wife, who didn't take this well, causing her to experience a personal exile.

Marriage can be defined as an everlasting bond between two people. Two souls joining to form one. However, sometimes this bond can fade and the love that each person felt for one-another can dissipate and manifest into something uglier and darker than the warmth of love. Her fourth husband had a mistress, so she "gave him a real cause for jealousy" (Halliday 119). At the funeral of her first husband she fell in love with the legs of an Oxford clerk. Although he was half her age, he became her fifth husband. This marriage was unhappy because he beat her. To anger her fifth husband, the wife of Bath tore three pages from his book. After this he beat her again. She pretended to be dead and he felt so guilty that he threw his whole book in the fire. This gave her the upper hand for the rest of his life. She presently is looking for a sixth husband when her character is introduced (Halliday 119).
Since this is ancient times this is the time where women were not as equal with men as they are in the present. This is the reason why this chapter will be my favorite out of the whole poem. In The Wanderer and “The Wife's Lament” the characters are dealing with the lose of a what they called life. In “Cuchilainn's Boyhood Deeds” the young man in the poem is seeking glory and honor. The poem dapple in both a physical journey and a mental or emotional dilemma. In “The Wanderer” the warrior is sent off in exile and he dreams of finding a new lord and a new hall to become apart of. Each of the characters has a physical journey that are in the mist of, but while in the middle of those trial they are also faced with emotional pain and longing for a better life.

The main character, Mrs. Louise Mallard encounters the sense of freedom rather than sorrow after she got knowledge of her husbands death.
