Carol Ann Duffy's,“Pilates Wife” raises important moral issues on the institution of marriage, the most important issue is of how love and desire can fade in marriage. Pilate's wife no longer desires Pilate and this can be seen in many other Poems in “The World Wife”.

Duffy uses a lot of imagery in this poem and the most important imagery is to do with hands ,“Firstly, his hands a woman's, softer than mine”. Duffy uses the softness of a woman’s hand as an insult to Pilate, she is not just offending Pilate's hands, but his personality and giving the impression that Pilate does no work. Duffy uses long vowels in the portrayal of his hands,“Pearly nails”,“Camp”,“Pale” to emphasise his lazy and indolent nature. Duffy uses a one word sentence at the end of the first stanza, “Pontius” it highlights Pilate's wife’s dislike towards him, the sound is short and abrupt and could be mistaken for “pounce”.This immediately displays the hatred that Pilate's wife has towards her husband, by describing her husband's hands as soft and clean is a sign that he does no work and after years of marriage, she is now only noticing that Pilate is not a hard-working man.

“Pilate's Wife” is one of the five poems in The World's Wife about a biblical character. The poem comes from a bible story, Pontus Pilate was the Roman governor of Judea. although he did not think jesus was guilty of any crime he allowed him to be crucified. When the Nazarene came to Jerusalem, Pilate's wife was miserable on her own, her husband did not pay attention to her which left her to have desires and urges about other men, this is shown through alliteration,“I longed for Rome, home, someone else”. She immediately longs for something new, someone new, ...

as with ' Mrs Sisyphus' their marriage is not working out because Mrs Sisyphus is dissatisfied, she complains about her hard working husband because he does not spend enough time with her this is a contrast with “Pilate's wife” because her husband is not hard working and still doesn’t not spend time with her leaving her dissatisfied

Duffy uses controlled lines and 6 stanzas, the controlled lines and stanza length and rhythm of this poem suggests someone reflecting on an event with emotional detachment, it gives the impression that Pilate's wife is reflecting on when she met Jesus for the first time and ever since that event, her marriage has not been the same
