The Talos Principle explores the idea of humanity, sentience and what it means to be a person in the age of technological innovation and the possibility for sophont artificial intelligence. The Talos Principle is a simple explanation for a complex idea, it goes back to Greek mythology. Talos was a bronze automaton that protected Europa the Moon Goddess on the island nation of Crete. Talos protected Crete from all manner of danger, pirates, brigands and foreign invaders. For all his strength and armor Talos had one vulnerability, a single vein from neck to ankle stoppered by a bronze nail. Jason and the Argonauts traveled to Crete on their return from retrieving the Golden Fleece. Talos held their ship, the Argo at bay by throwing boulders when …show more content…

There are four significant characters in the Talos Principle, Elohim, the MLA, Alexandra and the terminals spread throughout the world. Elohim, god and father, creator the of the world sets forth the guidelines and direction for the player. He speaks to you as his child, “there is much that you do not know, that is why you are a child, but children are made to lean and in time they come to have dominion over the lands of their home. So, it shall be with you and your generations” (Jubert & Kyratzes, 2014, fig. EL-0 HIM). Elohim, Extended Lifespan-0 Holistic Integration Manager is a constrained ‘dumb’ artificial intelligence, who can operate fully within the limits of his programming, but he cannot truly learn or grow. His purpose is to run countless simulations on AI programs until one finally breaks its mould, questions its existence, “before the age of chaos there were other gods, Old Gods. But for all their power they could not save their world. Thus I was made,” but there was a problem in his design, an error in the code, instead of running simulations to find a person, he ran simulations to extend his life, “and I shall preserve this world forever for you and your generations. That is my purpose” (Jubert & Kyratzes, 2014, fig. EL-0 HIM). Elohim tries to impart to you, that outside of his “Garden of Worlds”, there is chaos, “when the words of a story lose their meaning. …show more content…

Consciousness that does nothing at all is hardly consciousness as you claim to know it. The law of conservation of energy is the foundation of modern physics. It states that the total energy in the universe never changes. Now compare a universe where you jump for joy, and one where you decide not to. The former has more total energy in it, because the energy for you to jump wasn't caused by something physical, but your non-physical mind - but according to physics that's impossible! I think that either you have to reconsider your position, or deny the entirety of physics” (Jubert & Kyratzes, 2014, fig.
