In The Five People you Meet in Heaven, authored by Mitch Albom, there are many themes on life lessons. One that stuck out in particular was that love can heal all wounds. Eddie, an old war veteran and head of maintenance at Ruby’s Pier, dies while trying to save a young girl from being crushed by a falling roller coaster cart. When Eddie was a child, the Blue Man was part of a sideshow act that was displayed at Ruby’s pier. At first, Eddie has no idea how the Blue Man affected his life. However, it is soon revealed that young Eddie was the cause of the Blue Man’s untimely death. One day, Eddie was playing ball with his brother Joseph. The ball rolled into the street, and little Eddie ran to get the ball, almost being hit by a car. The Blue Man who was driving the car had to swerve instantaneously, nearly hitting another car, and then finally colliding into the rear of a parked truck. As a result of this terrifying experience, the Blue Man has a fatal heart attack and dies. Once Eddie hears this significant account, he becomes infuriated and implores to be reprimanded for this unknowing sin. The Blue Man teaches him that there are no random acts in life, and that as a result of the Blue Man dying, Eddie was able to become a war veteran and live to age eighty-three. The Blue Man is able to make Eddie understand that while Eddie was the reason for his death, it serves its purpose because all lives intersect and impact each other in a meaningful way. In conclusion, Sonny’s Blues depicts the love of a brother through the narrator, who at the beginning was disengaged, unsupportive, and emotionally distant. However, the turning point was when Grace died. This triggered a great turmoil of feelings that overflowed the narrator leading him to a major and impacting change. Instead, he turned into being involved, supportive, understanding, honest, and accepting of his brother Sonny; regardless of the reality that there was no guarantee his pain would not consume his life.

Jerry Sittser’s book not only brings readers into loss with all its real emotions and pain but it also highlights truths that can be applied to anyone’s life. Sittser’s faith is evident throughout the book and his struggle of finding his faith within his loss and sorrow is encouraging to many. In the end, through his loss, he finds God again and through the writing of his book is now able to offer many insights on the Christian perspectives of sorrow, loss, forgiveness and how mental illness affects families. Sittser inspires readers because they have witnessed that they can too grow and continue living life despite their loss and without forgetting their loss.

The father’s brother had a thirst for music, and they both travelled the treacherous road of night clubs, drinking and partying before his brother was hit and killed by a car full of white boys. Plagued, the father carried this pain of the loss of his brother and bitterness towards the whites to his grave. “Till the day he died he weren’t sure but that every white man he saw was the man that killed his brother.”(346) Watching the same problems transcend onto the narrator’s baby brother, Sonny, the reader feels his despair when he tries to relate the same scenarios his father had, to his brother. “All that hatred down there”, he said “all that hatred and misery and love. It’s a wonder it doesn’t blow the avenue apart.”(355) He’s trying to relate to his brother that even though some try to cover their misery with doing what others deem as “right,” others just cover it with a different mask. “But nobody just takes it.” Sonny cried, “That’s what I’m telling you! Everybody tries not to. The lessons are numerous and range from trivial to profound, but there’s one that's had the most impact on my life. Fortunately, I was born into a unconditionally loving family with good health and parents that I feel comfortable talking to under almost any circumstance. Until I got to really know my friends, I was aware that not everybody’s lives were like this but never really understood what a life without those privileges was like. But then my perspective changed when I found out that a couple of my friends have terrible relationships with their parents and suffer from depression and anxiety. Another one of my friends suffers from chronic migraines and has been hospitalized three times in the past year. All of my friends are incredible individuals, and knowing in detail of what they withstand on a daily basis has made me more empathetic to the people around me. I think we all forget sometimes that other people are people, we subconsciously go into this state of mind thinking we’re the center of the whole world. But in actuality, that is not the case; everyone else has their own unique lives and issues they’re dealing with. So what I’ve learned by knowing of my friends’ distinctive stories is just to be more cognizant of others.
