Throughout the fantasy film Conan the Barbarian, the director uses many different film techniques to imply to the audience a specific message or deeper meaning behind his intentions of the way the film was made. The movie is about a young boy named Conan losing his family and being forced into slavery under the ruling of Thulsa Doom. Conan grows up being exposed to a barbaric lifestyle. He uses this lifestyle to defeat Thulsa Doom and the disturbing ritual-like worshiping of the serpent. The directors use of cinematography to convey relationships, and costumes and makeup to portray the time period and social status of the characters. The use of camera positioning helps to convey the superior relationship between characters. This occurs during …show more content…
The movie is set in a barbaric and medieval type era, which is represented through the dirty, outdoors look of the characters. Many of the characters’ appearances depict their lifestyles and what role in society they belong to. Conan’s character is seen wearing very minimal amounts of clothing, which usually consist of animal fur through most of the movie. The reason for this is because he experiences a slave-like lifestyle for nearly half of his life. His character represents a strong, masculine man, therefore, he is usually seen shirtless when performing manly acts. The different types of clothing Conan wears emphasize his barbaric and violent demeanor. By the end of the film, the viewer experiences the dramatic evolution of Conan’s clothing. Conan is wearing full body armor while sitting on a throne. This implies the power and leadership Conan gains after he finally defeats Thulsa Doom, who killed his parents when he was a child. Also, in the film other characters’ costumes relate to the time period being conveyed. The actors/actresses playing the characters in the village Conan visits, wear more clothing and their clothes correspond with their roles in society. These people consist of the working class, and the clothing helps to let the audience understand each character’s service they are providing. Unlike Conan and the village of people, the upper class wore more …show more content…
Throughout the movie, many characters are shown wearing barely any makeup or none at all. This portrays the violence and barbarism present in the lifestyle of the characters. During the fight scene at the end of the movie, there is an enormous amount of blood coming from the soldiers of Thulsa Doom’s military men. Conan, the wizard, and Subotai fight off the warriors by stabbing them or either shoot them with an arrow. In this scene the audience sees blood going everywhere as heads are cut off and more and more men are stabbed and killed. The blood is flying in the air and all over the ground showing the savagery of the barbaric acts throughout the fight scene. The men all fight until death and never back down because they are a part of the followers of Thulsa Doom and whatever he says goes. This demonstrates that the blood creates a violent atmosphere and it reveals the type of time period of which this film takes place. Also, the characters such as Conan and Valeria are illustrating the medieval and ancient film through the use of makeup. These characters do not have on elaborate makeup styles. They appear as dirty, and have a more natural appearance. The characters also have a warrior type of appearance to them because they wear very little makeup and it makes them look like they are not as focused on looking perfect compared to an upper class person. Movie Analysis: The Disney original classic, “Tower of Terror” inspired by the iconic Disneyland and Disney World attraction, Tower of Terror/Twilight Zone. This Disney original movie, being described as a made-for-TV movie from many critic websites, is mild spooky film that targets the younger audience of eight year olds and older. At Halloween of 1939, lightning strikes at five people, which included the famous child actor in the movie, Sally Shine, at an elevator at the Hollywood Tower Hotel.
In Style Wars, one sees how social marginalization affected graffiti writers in 1970s and 1980s New York. Firstly, Style Wars chronicles how the city government employed racist policing and propaganda to criminalize writers of color. Secondly, the documentary shows that newspapers and TV networks unequally privileged writers of higher socioeconomic status through front-page and prime-time coverage. Thirdly, the film depicts graffiti writers who conformed to masculine norms as disproportionately visible throughout the city. Although many writers featured in Style Wars minimized barriers against making art, legal racism, classist media coverage, and interpersonal masculinity limited recognition for certain writers.
An example of this would be a close up on the facial expressions this would make the audience more susceptible to feel the same as the character. These effects can be caused from changing the setting to altering the camera angles used. Throughout the essay I will discuss the effect they have introducing the character Indiana Jones. We are introduced into the film with the paramount trademark of a mountain but unexpectedly we are brought straight into the film by merging this symbol with the actual mountain in the South American rainforest. Spread across the screen is the words South America to allow the audience to know where the scene is set.
The Warriors, a film based on the book of the same name by Sol Yurick, was released in 1979. It was directed by Water Hill (The Making, 2016). This film is a cult classic about a gang that becomes stranded away from home and has to fight their way back to their home turf. This movie has held a fascination for many and it is a fact that it is loosely based on an event from Grecian times, the Battle of Cunaxa in 401 B.C. which is chronicled in Xenophon’s “The Anabasis” that follows a Grecian army who becomes stranded after the battle between Athens and Sparta (The Making, 2016). Although critically critiqued for its filming style it is a cult classic and is ranked by Entertainment weekly as number 16 in the Top 50 Cult movies. (The Top 50, 2016).
The first element is Camera distance; it is used in every scene and in every shot. It refers to how far away the camera is to the characters in the scene. Camera distance was developed in order to provide more to the mise-en-scene of a certain scene. “Mise-en-scene encompasses of variety of categories related to the staging of an action”(Belton 47). Camera distance is one of these important factors in making the scene and giving a sense of what you are supposed to be experiencing during the film. Without using camera distance to its fullest the scene or shot may not come across to the viewer as what the director or writer intended. An example of camera distance being used to its potential is in the opening sequence at ricks café. The first shot that we see at ricks is of ricks sign on the ca...
... also allows for deeper plot development with the characters back stories and ties two seemingly unrelated events into one flowing story removing the need to use in medias res. The shared point of view is extreamly important in connecting the story with the theme and allows for the reader to pick up on the foreshadowing and irony present throughout the story.
I chose to view the movie Lion, a movie based on the book A Long Way Home by Saroo Brierley. This movie is about a five-year-old boy, Saroo, living in a poor, rural area in India. Saroo convinces his older brother Guddu, to let him tag along and find work in a nearby city. Saroo ends up trapped and alone in a decommissioned passenger train that takes him to Calcutta, over 1,000 miles away from his home.
The Cuban historical film, La Última Cena, or The Last Supper, takes place at a plantation in Havana at the end of the 18th century. In an effort to respect the holy week and to teach his slaves about Christianity, a sanctimonious plantation owner invites twelve of his slaves to dinner with him to reenact the last supper. During the dinner, the Count tries to influence his slaves towards Christianity and feeds them religious rhetoric. As the night goes on, the Count gets drunk and begins to make promises to his slaves in an attempt to seem more Christ-like. The next day, Good Friday, his promises are not kept and the slaves revolt. Because of the rebellion, the twelve slaves that ate dinner with the Count are all hunted down and killed except for one. This film can be further explained through the concepts of three theorists, Aimé Césaire, Homi K. Bhabha, and W.E.B. DuBois.
In the movie, I Am Legend, the directors utilizes infected humans to portray a post-apocalyptic world by displaying the humans as sick and deformed. In the film, Francis Lawrence, the director, exhibits how an engineered virus which was supposed to cure cancer, destroys humanity by mutating the humans and dispersing the virus, therefore killing ninety percent of the world’s population and turning them into Dark seekers. In the film, the director exploit how humans undergo evolution by transforming them into dark seekers. The film displays human evolution by exhibiting how humans transform into these horrendous monster therefore displaying how the directors critique and exhibiting human evolution in a negative light. The film does well in displaying

The action-figures are now able to reach out beyond its "contained" space and into the immediate surrounding environment. The figures now seem to impose themselves forcefully upon the spectator, provoking the viewer's response to the dramatic situations.
The end of World War I, according to some European historians, occurred on May 8, 1945 or V-E Day. A day marking the change of the world’s enemy from Nazi Germany to Communist Russia. Fears of Communism, the totalitarian government of Soviet Russia, were invited through the use of propaganda in the media by the United States government. Illustrating this type of propaganda is the motion picture, The Red Menace released in 1949 by Republic Motion Pictures provides acumens of the fears and concerns on the minds of Americans during a period in America’s history known today as the Cold War.
The movie I chose to analyze for historical accuracy was War Horse. This movie was set in the First World War, starting in Britain but the story also explored France and Germany during this time period as well. Three scenes will be analyzed: the trench warfare scene between the British and the Germans, the scene where the British soldiers were gassed, and the scene where the British were getting patched up and nursed. War Horse does well to stick to the historical accuracy of what happened during the First World War due to the fact that the three scenes that I have chosen to analyze are not embellished and are close to what really happened.
In the anime, Attack on Titan, the director is able to create and blend different master plots: vengeance by visual editing that places flashbacks at important moments inside the story and camera angles; hero’s quest by visual cuts and transitions from different character points of view; underdog by changing camera angles. Finally, but not least temptation through the use of sound editing with actions scenery and coloring. Narrative elements used by the director inside a film can change the master plot at any critical moment inside a story, elaborating a different story that can vary depending on our way of interpreting and analyzing the world around us. The director may have a general message that he wants to convey through narrative elements as it was previously stated, but we as the audience have the last word in what the film represents even though we obtain the main idea through the manipulation of the narrative elements used by the director.
