On Thursday night of Parents’ Weekend at 7pm, I went to the Farmer’s Market, located in downtown San Luis Obispo down Higuera Street between Osos and Nipomo Street. Many food stands, local businesses, and live entertainment were set up outside on the sidewalks, which were blocked off to cars. It ranged around 3-4 blocks long, with barbeque stands on both ends. Many students, families and children attended, creating a large crowd a people. People walked up and down the streets, browsing for food and other things to buy. It would be a good public place to people watch and observe a crowd’s behavior at night, as opposed to daylight. I was also curious to see how differently vendors and local businesses interact with patrons in an outdoor setting as opposed to in a storefront. It would be interesting to see if and how different social identities came together and performed in this laidback, informal, vendor-style setting. As a main attraction here in SLO, I wanted to see how the atmosphere and the people in the town contributed to making this a successful weekly event. Social Identity was enacted a number of ways. Most likely, the people attending the Farmers’ Market would need to have a certain amount of time and money, otherwise, they wouldn’t want to, and couldn’t, go on a Thursday night. Someone would want to have enough money to …show more content…
In the day time, the opposite is enforced. Many of the vendors are facing towards the road since the streets are blocked off to cars. Another norm was also to stand and walk while on the road. If a person wanted to sit down, that person would have to sit on the curb, out of the way of the crowd. It was interesting to see how socialization played out here. In the day time, none of the norms during this day would have been appropriate to do, which showcases how socializing depends on the settings of the environment and the values of the people surrounding
Roll the windows down, turn the music up, and drive slowly. Now you're cruising. Cruising is the art of seeing and being seen, and in Tucson the center of this art is Speedway Boulevard. This six-lane street runs east to west through Tucson and is one of the busiest thoroughfares in the city. It hosts a mix of commercial and private buildings: small shops, offices, restaurants, grocery stores, apartment buildings and older homes, as well as the University of Arizona. Despite the apartments and occasional houses, Speedway is mostly a commercial street populated with strip malls and other businesses. Cruising is most visible along the more commercial, business-oriented East Speedway, which for the purposes of this essay is defined as the three mile stretch of road from Alvernon to Wilmot. Like most streets, Speedway was built for an entirely practical reason: to conduct automobile traffic from one place to another with a minimum of waiting. This utilitarian reason is inverted by cruising. The purpose of cruising, unlike driving, is not to arrive but to not arrive. Cruising is a social activity wherein the cars become tools for meeting other people as well as a means of getting from one place to another. The reputation of cruising, and of the nighttime Speedway, is not nearly so benign. As traffic slows and the music increases, the character of Speedway as a place - that is, a focus for human memory and experience - changes to reflect the activities and desires of the cruisers.
The majority of people who attend Mardi Gras parades on the west bank are often different from the majority of people who attend Mardi Gras parades on the east bank. The east bank is home to nearly all of the famous city of New Orleans, and attracts many more tourists and New Orleans residents to parades during the Mardi Gras season. A large amount of drunk tourists and residents often roam the streets of the east bank during Mardi Gras season, making it a more mature setting. On the other hand, the west bank normally receives much fewer tourists than the east bank, making the parades on the west bank more family oriented. Since the majority of tourists during Mardi Gras season are seeking an oppo...
Echo Park, one of Los Angeles’s most well-known neighborhoods, was once associated with gang violence in the 80’s and 90’s. The crime rate in the area was to the point that many people would not dare being caught walking out after dark. Nowadays, people do not fear walking in the streets of Echo Park after dark. This new sense of safety in Echo park can be contributed to its nightlife scene characterized by Indie music venues and trendy bars. You may ask yourself how this change came about?

The sidewalk is a social structure for the people who work and live in it. They are mentors for each other. They play the same role of self-direction and psychological fulfillment of a formal job or family for example; where the society is shrunken on that one sidewalk. They form an informal social organization and social control so they can survive against the outer social system; meanwhile, this social organization organizes property rights and division of labor. Although their life seems deviant, they still practice conventional social practices and norms. Although it might seem that these men are engaged in random behavior, yet there is an organized interaction of norms and goals, and a shared collective self-consciousness from having a shared common history.
A favorite evening activity is clustering on street corners to listen to ghost stories, including the one about the fearsome “man with the big sombrero.” Playtime is more limited for poorer children, who must help their parents on farms or with crafts (Sport and Recreation).
This essay has detailed several examples of how social order is made and remade on City Road and the everyday challenges that social order faces. Firstly, it begins with identifying how social order is challenged and how people perceive social order and moves on to look at both formal and informal ways of making and remaking social order. The essay concludes by identifying the expectations of how people should behave and the consequences when disorder occurs, continuing the making and remaking of
South Central Farm was a 14-acre plot of land that was ran and operated as a fully functional urban farm. It provided much needed support to the community around the farm, that consisted mostly of lower-income and minorities. The farmers, who ran the largest urban city farm at the time, used it for monetary benefit as well as psychological benefit to the community. By growing their own steady supply go goods, many who would not have access to these products normally, benefited immensely from the farm’s existence. If the farmer’s had had the monetary means for remaining on the land, the closing down of the farm could have been avoided.
Agricultural subsidies is a very complex and controversial economic topic today. It will continue to be a hot topic as government continues it. It is largely debated in the United States as well as in other countries. The reason it is so largely debated is because it literally have an effect on the entire world market. Not to mention that the farm has been booming the last 5 to 10 years. This topic also tends to draw strong opinions in our area in particular due to the large agricultural community in our region. However, even within different states there are many supporters as well as opponents to these government subsidies.
Businesses prospered near the late nineteenth century. Many monopolies, centralized banks, and trust were produced due to this industrialization rush. Standard Oil company, Carnegie Steel company and other large vicious companies dominated not only laborers and farmers, but the governors and their regulations. There was a deep strive for efficiency and effectively making a profit only to their benefit, leaving other classes to fall apart. Farmers were the most endangered group of citizens. These businesses and corporations found ways to manipulate the government ridding of competition for farmers. Farmers feared for their production and consumer production. With the lack of competition and prices of their products through the roof, consumer will not be able to purchase items and farmers will not make a profit from what th...

Traffic! Hundreds and thousands of people crowding the sidewalk. Diverse food places to get your grub on. All of these elements in my environment sort of work in a harmonious pattern in a place I call home, New York City. When I ask people about New York City they usually associate it with the extraordinary buildings that pierce the sky or the congested sidewalks with people desperate to shop in the famous luxury stores in which celebrities dwell. Even though I grew up here, I somehow manage to get lost within the Big Apple. The voices of the never-ending attractions call out and envelope you while admiring them in awe. The streets are filled with an atmosphere that is like a young child on a shopping spree in a candy store. Although my feet

Farming has been around many centuries. It has advanced slowly over the centuries with the help of technology. In the last twenty years, farming practices have taken a major turn. Technology has advanced to a point where it allows farmers not to be present in the machine while it is performing a task. Many farming tasks are running off of cell phones and computers away from the area where the tractor is located, which not in sight of the farmer. While it seems beneficial to agriculture, technology that allows farmers to complete tasks without even being present actually damages the industry. The cost of the technology that runs the machines has made it impossible for many smaller farmers to purchase it. In many ways the technology has helped the Ag industry, but there are many negatives to it, too. Technology is replacing many jobs. Jobs that used to take multiple people now require just one – someone to program and operate the computer. Drones have also taken over many jobs that used to require many people.
