Introduction
Pope Francis released an encyclical entitled ‘ Laudato si’ which means ‘praise be’, the first two words of the ‘Canticle of Brother Sun’by St Francis of Assisi. It is interesting to note that Francis dictates this canticle to Br.Leo, his companion, when he was almost blind. He contemplates God’s creation not with his naked eyes but with the eyes of mind. His unqualified love for all creatures, small and great made him enter into communion with them and he built a home of all creation. For Francis, everything has the trace of God and his look at the created world is a key to his inner life. Francis said “I wish to compose a new hymn about Lord’s creatures, of which we make daily use, without which we cannot live and with which

It is composed of four components: social, environmental, cultural and economic growth and they are inter-related. When modern economics focus on market- oriented way, they tend to leave behind environment. This economy forgets the symbolic relationship between individual, community and cosmos. The present economy does nothings as they are but from the point of view of utility. Unsustainable situation is caused by the use of resources contrary to their nature. The nature of the natural resources is to renew itself as it is being used. Unfortunately human greed does not allow this …show more content…
Pope speaks about "authentic development" - He explains about efforts to bring about an “integral improvement in the quality of human life" (p. 118). Extreme poverty, lack of housing facilities, lack of opportunities to get basic food and necessities of life hinder someone's integral development. Pope speaks against the capitalist markets that always stands for the progress of a few - rich people.
Development can be authentic only when it promotes the total well-being of the individual. Gandhi pleaded for an ideal economy where there is more truth than gold greater charity than love of the self. He believes that the economic is untrue if it ignores or disregards moral values. Wisdom is not just about maximising one’s own self interest but balancing own self interest with others’ interest. Give more importance for ‘being’ than ‘having’. We can never be perfect or peaceful by having but being is perfect in itself. So save the being of the
In chapter two, ‘Francis and His Companions,’ Cunningham exposes the considerable growth in Francis of Assisi’s influence, as he recounts his companions that joined him after deciding to live his life. The chapter is significant because it exposes how Francis of Assisi’s gospel is different from the orthodox Catholic practices, which recognized the pope, as the sole Vicar of Christ. (Cunningham 32). This chapter is important in my life because it reinforces my conviction God is the almighty and all-powerful, and all people regardless of the status of the needed to worship
Greed can lead to many different situations, experiencing times of hardship, consequences, but a major consequence is poverty which is not realized through
There are six practices that Francis helped put in place transformed Christianity for good. His practices are still preached today. Friendship, Francis was friends with everyone. He had the ability to accept those in poverty and the wealthy, but even more he was able to accept the purity of nature and animals. Francis preached that we all are equal and have something to offer one another. Poverty is another practice that Francis had spoke of. He felt by giving everything you have and living with nothing allowed you to become one with poverty. Spirituality was also something that no other leader had ever preached as an important time no matter who or what, faith is the ultimate connection to follow God. Francis cared for everything no matter what it was, human, animal even things such as rocks needed to be cared for. Finally Francis's last practice was death. Francis felt that death was his sister. Everyone would be encountered with it and it was something not to be feared, but be more looked at as peaceful (Sweeney,
I would love to learn more about Pope Francis’s views on everything. He demonstrates what it is like to be a virtuous person and as Aristotle has said “The virtuous life is the best life.” By being as virtuous as Pope Francis, I believe that is what makes us, as humans, the most happiest.
At the beginning of the Pope’s encyclical he states that he “would like to enter into dialogue with all people about our common home.” He means to address the whole world, not just the bishops of the church, and not just people of religious affiliations, but to all good people of this world. The goal of the dialogue that is brought up by Pope Francis is to bring about conversation about the environmental challenges that face us ahead; he states that “We need a conversation that includes everyone, since the environment challenges we are under going, and its human roots, concern and affect us all.” When he stated this he also called out the churches of the world to have a conversation as well, as the church is still apart
“And if I endure [pain, suffering, rejection, and humiliation] patiently and without dismay, I say to you, therefore, that therein lies perfect joy, true virtue and the salvation of the soul.” St. Francis of Assisi was born in 1181 in the town of Assisi Italy, the son of a wealthy cloth merchant. He was expected to inherit his father’s business or become a knight and for the first 25 years of his life he lived an extravagant and sinful life. Eventually, after a long conversion he began teaching, founding the Franciscan order in 1209 at the age of 28. After some time he gave up the authority of his order and settled down to being just another brother. He received the stigmata in 1224 and the rest of his life was filled with suffering and joy. Throughout his life, St. Francis was virtuous and especially in suffering, was filled with joy. He found
Even though many of his writings and sermons did not last, The Canticle of Brother Sun has survived the many centuries and is now looked at as one of Francis’ greatest writings. The Canticle is a poem which talks of the different aspects of nature, such as earth, wind, and water, and praises God for creating them. The Canticle also contains many parallels to the gospels. After his experience in the church, Francis was inspired by the life of Jesus. As G. K. Chesterton says, “Francis of Assisi was a mirror of Christ”. Francis saw great promise in the life that Jesus lived in the gospels and tried to be an example of Him through his own work. The poem reveals many of Francis’ own teachings of chastity, poverty, and obedience along with the call to respect nature.
...an overabundance of information all applicable to the topic. My feeling was that such an overwhelming load of facts and systems directed me away from the most important facts of the chapter. Its imperative that the student understands the small scale relationship to economic development. Therefore my attempt was to highlight the main topics of the chapter and relate them to the reader to provoke intrest and thought towards many of these important life changing situations that occur everyday. If one can see past all the theories primarily and see the cause and effects behind them, they’re appreciation for the ideas stated in the theories.
Rostow's five stages of economic growth begin with the traditional society. As described by Rostow, the underdevelopment is naturalised in this structure with the evidence of constrained production means such as technology. In this part, the society applies subsistence economy that technically results in small margins of productivity such as hunter-gatherer society (Sahlins 1972:1) Undesired to do nature exploitation, Rostow viewed society at this stage as restrained from progress. The second phase following the previous stage is preconditions of take-off. Economic growth starting to take place and is essential to justify the means within good definition. The society begins to implement the manufacturing of products while at the same time foreign intervention by advanced societies such as through colonialism is needed to bring about change in one's society. The next step towards moder...
The impact of the development on the environment and its resources should be understood in order to move forward towards a way to make the relationship between development, growth and the environment possible. From here the concept
Pope Francis presents the challenges in a way that gives hope to all people that the church will stand by them in their times of need. Abuse of women, addiction, and poverty are just a few of the issues that Pope Francis mentions, but through the writing of Amoris Laetitia Pope Francis sends the message that whether a family is struggling with one of these issues or a different one, they can find light in their situation by turning to Jesus and finding comfort in the church. People such as Hillary Clinton could argue the points made in Chapter 2 by saying that families facing difficult times should not expand their family, or should terminate a pregnancy if they see fit, but Pope Francis makes it clear that no family is perfect. Francis said, 57 “I thank God that many families, which are far from considering themselves perfect, live in love, fulfil their calling and keep moving forward, even if they fall many times along the way.” Overall, Pope Francis stresses the importance of the human family itself and how we can all find the beauty in our struggles if we turn to the
Economic growth and social development are complementary and they have a close but complex relationship. With the economic growth, it is clear that there are many environmental concerns in today’s society. Air, water, and land pollution have worsened; the environment of wild animals and plants has been seriously damaged; many species are threatened with extinction, deforestation and over-exploitation of mineral resources.
in relation to development. Development is explained by the Oxford Dictionary as the process of developing or developed in a specified state of growth or advancement. Underdeveloped as according to the Oxford Dictionary is ‘not fully developed or not advanced economically’ which is meant for a country or a region. We can certainly see the difference between underdeveloped and developed where the changing situation emerges from the economic point of view. To be more specific, worlds within world were created i.e. the nomenclature of First World and Third World came into picture. The First World is said to be the industrialised, capitalist countries of Western Europe, North America, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand who are developed (as explained in the definition). The Third World includes the developing countries of- Asia, Africa and Latin America who are still in the mode of developing. Normally we understand the situation of underdevelopment is because the third world was under the colonies or the colonial rule for a certain period of time and lags behind the first world in every aspects like- social, economical, political, technological advancements which are yet to be seen in the third world fully like the first world. In this paper we will talk about various theorists from - Karl Marx (capitalism and class conflict), Kay and Amin (merchant capitalism, colonialism and neo-colonialism), Vladimir Lenin (imperialism), Andre Gunder Frank (third world dependency), Lipton (urban bias) and dependency theory. Here in this paper we will try to explain and understand the relevance of the various underdevelopment theories and different attributes related to it terms of the Indian Context.
The first is to encourage economic growth and sustainable development. It emphasizes the need for economic growth, the need to improve the level of contemporary human welfare through economic growth, enhance national strength and social wealth. However, sustainable development should not only pay attention to the amount of economic growth, but also to the pursuit of quality of economic growth. That is economic development, including growth in the number and quality improvement in two parts. Growth in the number is limited, and rely on scientific and technological progress and improving the effectiveness of economic activity and quality, adopt a scientific mode of economic growth is sustainable. Flag of sustainable development is the sustainable use of resources and good ecological environment. Economic and social development can not exceed the carrying capacity of resources and the
In international parlance, development encompasses the need and the means by which to provide better life for people in poor countries and it includes not only economic growth, although that is crucial, but also human development like...
