Southern Copper Corporation SCC is a majority-owned, indirect subsidiary of Grupo Mexico SA. Grupo Mexico is the fourth biggest copper producer around the world with major copper mining projects in Mexico and Peru. Copper production is the core company business representing 78% of company’s revenues while the balance revenues are generated from excavating other minerals such as silver, Molybdenum and Zinc. 1
The company’s core values constitute - Creativity (new ways of doing things), Honesty (guided by high moral standards), Respect (accept and abide by the law, social standards and principles of nature), Solidarity (Friendly work environment), Laboriousness (Labor is the powerful force for transformation), Responsibility (Accept consequences of our actions).
Although social responsibility is part of Southern Copper’s core values and mission statement, when it comes to company’s core business and copper operations, the company tends to be more reactive.
Concerning corporate social responsibility efforts, Southern Copper invested a lot in community development projects. Implemented sustainability programs covered the following areas:
ENVIRONMENT: Company emphasizes the importance of more responsible water management. As water is a basic supply for mining-metallurgic process, the scarcity of water can limit company’s ability to generate value. To avoid any effect of company operations on the water supply for the local communities and farmers, company participated in important water infrastructure projects such as dams and irrigation canals. Although southern Copper has a strong sustainability program; company faced suspension and work stoppage several times due to strikes by either labor or local communities. Company should be proactive when it comes to internal dissatisfaction issues. It should do internal research to uncover areas of development. Concerning local community, company should have open communication channels with local community. Further, to avoid any issues post implementation, the company should have a public presentation for the environmental plan before project starts.
In this life it is essential to base your work around your beliefs and to feel passionate about what you do. Then spreading your passion for your work onto others is how you grow as an individual and as a company. Which is what I felt after reading the #1 core value.

The corporate social responsibility is a commitment by a business to contribute to economic development while improving the quality of life for employees and their families’ as-well as contributing to the society. Walmart is a well-known company that offers customers the items they want and need at a low cost, with nearly 4,000 stores in the United States. According to the Fortune 500, Walmart was ranked number 1 in 2015. Just like any other superstore Walmart needs to continue the use of social responsibility by recreating a relationship between business and the community especially if they want to dominate the competition in 2016.
