Run Lola Run directed by Tom Tykwer, was an innovative film that dives deep into philosophy with its spectacular cinematography and enhancing sound track. This film departs from the standard film techniques due to its use of so many methods. There is an interesting fusion of mediums that Tom Tykwer reported was about creating a juxtaposition between all the possibilities of life and all the possibilities of cinema (1). Animation, black and white, and red light scenes are all used. The black and white signifies that the event is in the past. The red light is used when they are contemplating their possible realities in an intimate setting. Animation gives the movie a game like feel reinforcing that we are trying to beat time. The opening sequence
is of a clock pendulum with a tautening face on it. The sound ticking is noticeably present. The camera focuses on the pendulum and the tracks upward guiding us into the belly of the beast that is time. The film is slowed down when they wanted you to focus greater attention on the exchange of events and sped up when urgency is being conveyed. The crowed sequence at the beginning of the film does both. First, we rush around the crowed conveying the rushed chaos of life then we pause and slow down reflecting on the character being introduced. The frenzied pace is key in retaining interest and conveying the theme that every decision you make creates the new map for future choices. Life is a maze of decisions and each decision could lead you to different outcome. When Lola runs down the stair circular staircase it reminiscent of the statement: round and round you go and where you stop know body knows. Lola is descending the staircase to an unknown fate. Each time her journey around the stair case leads to a different outcome. The techno sound track was effective in conveying a fast pace because of the quick, strong, and repetitive beat. The film Wendy and Lucy, directed by Kelly Reichardt, presents a sparse narrative. The film has been criticised for its lack of background story, and as a short film, much of the story is left to the viewer to infer from what is presented in the plot. However, Wendy and Lucy is able to depict the intimate relationship between Wendy and her dog as well as reflecting more broadly on the everyday, and commenting on the current economic state of the film’s setting in America. This essay will examine how film form contributes to the viewer’s awareness of the story in Wendy and Lucy and allows a deeper understanding of the themes presented. Run Lola Run is a film set in Berlin, Germany, where in the opening sequence we are introduced to a bird's-eye view of the entire setting; which is a view of Berlin's old city urban streets. The film was originally an art festival film, which allowed the auteur/director, Tom Tykwer, to experiment with several and generally risky and non-commercial camera angles and visual features to create the film's idiosyncratic emphasis on time, fate and human urgency. In doing so we are first shown a bird's-eye angle that merges into establishing shots that rapidly track to extreme close ups. Also in the first 5 mins of the film, we see the use of cross-cutting when Lola is having a conversation on the phone with Manni. This.This is interspersed with black and white flashbacks that are gradually sped up. Following up on this Tykwer employs jump cuts as Lola chooses to embark on her life or death 20 minute odyssey. Changing it up Tykwer follows this scene with a cartoon strip of Lola, which then cuts back to live action. The overall result of Tykwer, using many different visual techniques was to again create a sense of urgency, effectively placing the viewer along side Lola in her frantic twenty minute race against time through the the city streets of Berlin.
Therefore, the distinctive visual techniques employed by the composer provide a vehicle for the respondent to understand the ideas and themes prompted by people and their experiences. Tykwer’s film, Run Lola Run demonstrates the effect of the distinctive visual in Lola’s exploration of the themes of chance and time, whilst Mackellar’s poem ‘My Country’ provides the audience with an evocative experience of the Australian environment.
Dynamic characters are built by dynamic movement in film. Whether the character is sitting down giving a lecture, or is a ballerina dancing on stage, character are born through movement. Movement in emotion, or physical, a characters action and re-actions are what draw audiences into their story. The characters in the movie Take the Lead gain power through their character transformations through dance, their movement on the dance floor directly impacts the way they carry themselves through life. In this paper I will explore three scenes, each scene will show different levels of progression in each character’s life, and I will show how the characters gain more power in their own lives the more successful they become with the movement of dance.
During the opening six minutes of Nicholas Roeg’s film Don’t Look Now, the viewer experiences a dynamic mixture of film techniques that form the first part of the narrative. Using metaphor and imagery, Roeg constructs a vivid and unique portrayal of his parallel storyline. The opening six minutes help set up a distinct stylistic premise. In contrast to a novel or play, the sequence in Don’t Look Now is only accessible through cinema because it allows the viewer to interact with the medium and follow along with the different camera angles. The cinematography and music also guide the viewer along, and help project the characters’ emotions onto the audience because they change frequently. The film techniques and choppy editing style used in Don’t Look Now convey a sense of control of the director over the audience and put us entirely at his mercy, because we have to experience time and space as he wants us to as opposed to in an entirely serial manner.

Tom Tykwer uses many film techniques that usually are not used in movies , making this film not like every other Hollywood movie. Techniques such as the use of flashback and flash forward , this giving the film an idea that just by one slightest move or event can change your move in different ways. Other techniques that made this film interesting and attention grabbing is the use of animation, cross- cutting, birds eye view and medium shot.
In order for the composer to represent existentialism, the audience must examine how determination shows us that we can control our destiny through cinematographic visual aspects. Throughout Tykwer’s film, he showcased Lola’s determination from the amalgamation of animation and live action using a pastiche of animated Lola running down stairs to a close up shot of her face. With the close up shot of animated Lola’s face, the facial expression of determination encapsulates how we are fascinated by Lola for her determination to change destiny for herself. Tykwer uses cinematographic elements to represent existentialism in how we can control our destiny through determination.
