It has been shown that children are heavily influenced by their parents and the way they choose to raise their children. My Virtual Child gives people the opportunity to see the outcome of their child through the kind of parenting techniques they decided to use. With my virtual child, I employed an authoritative style of parenting, which means being involved while still allowing some independence, just as my parents have used on me. It was not until I saw the psychological analysis of my eight year old that I realized how much I had been influencing my child, Delilah. Her verbal, mathematical, and visual-spatial abilities are at an extraordinary level. It showed that she scored a thirteen on information, a fourteen on vocabulary, a thirteen on similarities, and a fifteen on comprehension. All of these scores were above the standard deviation for most children at eight years of age. Delilah has shown a great interest in reading which I encourage by discussing them with her and trying to find other books I think she would be interested in. Encouraging Delilah’s use and interpretation of language has shown to be one of my most important successes. Language is defined as a form of communication, whether spoken, written, or signed, that is based on a system of symbols (Santrock, 2016). A lot of language development comes from children reading and increasing their reading levels as they get older. Delilah can sound out almost any word and only occasionally gets stuck when she is reading out loud. She has accomplished this through my encouragement and involvement. Reading especially helps with building a bigger vocabulary and comprehension which are two categories that Delilah scored the highest. ...e (My Virtual Child). Dominic is able to read a few short words, write his name and most of the letters in the alphabet. The results also mentioned that he is at an age appropriate level of phonological awareness and his language development is average in vocabulary and retelling a story (My Virtual Child). Cognitively, Dominic is not interested in little art projects and becomes frustrated when he works with blocks and shapes. Dominic is also behind mathematically when counting, identifying quantitative relationships and classifying objects (My Virtual Child). The parenting questionnaire suggests that we are slightly above average in affection and warmth; and we are in the top 15% concerning control and discipline.
In conclusion of the My Virtual Life Simulation Program, I raised Luciano, my male child, until he reached the age of 18 years old. Luciano came about the world normally through a natural birth; labor lasted about 10 hours. Luciano inherited 50% of my characteristics through the survey taken prior to the start of the simulation. The other half was through the actions and changes that occurred throughout his life by the choices of my virtual partner and I and Luciano’s personal decisions later on in life. Certain characteristics Luciano developed resulted directly from the authoritative parenting style I chose to follow throughout the simulation. Despite minor setbacks towards the beginning, Luciano, developed properly in his psychological development which involved his physical, cognitive, social, and moral development, personality, emotional understanding, and peer competence. They have begun to develop sound-symbol understanding to speak the written words (Reading map of development, 2013), this is demonstrated by their ability to point at the word they are reading. The child is beginning to understand the book and its meaning, however fluency is not yet developed and several semantic mistakes were made. They display a good understanding of a graphonic cue and can do this mostly without prompt from the parent. Visual/pictorial cue can be achieved with prompt from the parent, the child is beginning to gain an understanding of how the pictures can match the text and this with more prompting should become an automatic cue. Vocabulary is still limited however it is expanding through their continued reading (Reading map of development, 2013). The purpose of this assignment is to answer the three posed questions in regards to my Virtual Child, who I will refer to as Kieran though out my assignment. I will be describing changes in his exploratory or problem solving behaviors as well as analyzing his temperament. I will also summarize his developmental assessment at nineteen months old that may differ from my perception than what was assessed through his developmental examiner.
I started this project very excited and interested in different decisions I’d be able to make and choose for a virtual child. I want to be a parent at some point in time, so I found this project to be very influential and helpful for me. Throughout the simulation, I made choices and decisions based on what both my parents and I would do, particularly leaning toward a stricter parenting style in order to keep the child in line with good morals and a strong background. I enjoyed this assignment, and I expect to remember certain decisions I made when I may become a real parent.
Throughout the course of the class and completing the My Virtual Child assignment, I have been given new information in regards to childhood development through the lifespan. Starting with infancy, we had the opportunity to raise our own child online and test our parenting skills while applying the knowledge we learned from class. I believe this program has helped me grasp the concepts we learned in class and fully understand the different aspects of development throughout childhood.
The purpose of this assignment is to answer the questions in regards to the Virtual Child I raised up to the age of 8 months given specific scenarios to answer. This in turn, gave me a progress report of how my Virtual Child was doing through the Bayley Scales of Infant Intelligence and Observations at 9 months. I will answer how his eating, sleeping, and motor developmental patterns compares to the typical developmental patterns. I will also explain his classic temperance as well as his attachment relationships and any areas that might or might not have affected his attachment securities. I will refer to the Virtual Child as “Kieran” throughout this assignment to answer the above questions.
Bringing a child into the world can be a very exciting moment, filled with lots of emotion. However, raising that child will come with many responsibilities and decision making. It can be stressful as parents go through the ups and downs of raising a child, but it can also be a memorable experience as we watch our child go through various stages of development. I thought that being a parent would come with its obstacles, but that it would be an exciting experience to raise a child to adulthood. Every child has a temperament and certain characteristics that we as parents, have to adapt to. My Virtual Child, Jill, at first, was difficult to soothe down when upset, mostly cautious and shy when around new people, and has a secure attachment (My Virtual Child). Raising Jill, I had to make several adjustments due to my personal relationship with my spouse and the economy always changing. The child’s lexical inventory is well developed. She has no troubles with finding words to express her thoughts. Not many words are repeated and that illustrates that she has a vast vocabulary to where she does not have to borrow words. She does not over or under extend the usage of her words.

As of this November I have been a parent for three years. I started my journey into parenthood at a very young and impressionable age. Thanks to social media, I am constantly bombarded with opinions on the best way to raise my child. One buzz word I frequently hear when discussing child rearing is helicopter parenting.
Children are unable to make decisions pertaining their future because their parents are hovering a lot and interfering in their lives. Such interference is what has led to the emergence of “Helicopter Parents” in our society.
