In these two short essays “ Mommy, What Does ‘Nigger’ mean”? written by Gloria Naylor and “Black Men in Public Space written by Brent Staples both provided literal as well as inferred message. They emphasis the effects that determine how a person thinks and acts based on a stereotype about African Americans. The way words and behavior/actions can impact the way racial identity is formed or perceived as because each minority group has a word that is used towards them that identifies them. Based upon the word it can be the way people view them as a whole. For example the derogatory word nigger is used towards the African American race. Because of this, African Americans are perceived as ignorant or having ignorance.
Racial Identity are formed
He narrates a situation where he was once walking behind a young White woman. The woman kept a distance between them and finally got off running when she realized that Staples was closing in on her. Besides mentioning that he is African American, Staples gives a thorough description of himself as he was on that day. "To her, the youngish black man - a broad six feet two inches with a beard and billowing hair, both hands shoved into the pockets of a bulky military jacket - seemed menacingly close"( Staples 188).This action by the young White lady left Staples wondering about what could have happened to her. People can be very naïve to judge and stereotype other individuals merely on the basis of what they see or hear about them. Out of this experience, Staples was subjected to racial identity that remained in his mind for a long time. To the woman, she could have been running because she had normal fear for the man who was following her. To Staples, this was a racially instigated
Even though over half of the black society is not what other societies say they are. They begin to think that and deny their self identity with the ones that were made up for them. Words and the way people behave are very powerful. Negative words and bad behavior have a negative impact, not only to the person the word is spoken to or the action is being performed , but by the person who is speaking them or behaving. It is important to always be careful whenever an individual refers to another in every way and how words, actions and behavior can be more powerful than they seem. Staples narrates “ After a dark, on the warren like streets of brooklyn where i live, i often see women who fear the worst from me”( Staples 189).Just because he belonged to the black race, women could only see him as a criminal or potential threat without even realizing the fact that he was just another young man because of the stereotypes she had in her mind. Naylor, couldn 't have been more puzzled when she heard the word I didn 't know what a nigger was, but I knew that whatever it meant, it was something he shouldn 't have called me” (Naylor 234).
So, such feelings of discrimination of hatred and insult others attempt towards black races are deeply rooted in what they hear and feel as a result of responses from the others.The racial discrimination implanted these stereotypes in the mind of society and such reactions from
