In the short story “Lather And Nothing Else” by Hernando Tellez, the barber made the correct choice in letting captain Torres live, because the barber would have been killed, and isn’t a murderer, and loves being a barber. The barber made the correct decision, if he had killed the Captain the barber would have been killed. So it would not have helped anything, but had gotten The barber killed. In the barber’s mind “ what good could come of that? None, of course” (Tellez, 2). Letting Captain Torres live means that the barber will stay alive as well and continue sending in information about the captain's whereabouts. If the barber had decided to kill Torres it wouldn’t have solved anything but cause even more problems for both sides, like another
attack with more blood, which was what the barber hyperbole was about. Another reason the barber made the correct choice is because, he is not a murder, and gets to keep being a barber which he loves to do. Tellez said “ Damn the hour that he came in, because I am a revolutionary, but not a murderer” (Tellez, 2). The barber decides he would let Torres live. The barber decided to let Torres go because he wasn’t the type to kill people, which is why he had a lot of anxiety, when was still deciding if was going to let Torres live or kill him. The barber loves doing his job, and if he had killed, he would have not been able to be a barber. In conclusion the barber made the correct decision to not kill the captain.
Thomson goes on to present several scenarios that show how negative and positive duties cannot be the final assessment as to the morally of an action. In one such scenario Thomson hypothesizes that the five people on the track are workers who have full knowledge of the dangers their job presents and are paid hazard pay as compensation. In this scenario the second track has been out of service for years and the one person one the tracks was invited and had their safety guaranteed by the Mayor who just so happened to be the trolley conductor. In this situation it is clear that negative and positive duties hold no bearing, the conductor is obligated by his own word to kill the five. In addition, the five workers have no special claim over the one person against being killed because they are fully aware of the possibly that they can die at
For instance, Dally did not have much to live for. No family that loved him except for Johnny, just a couple of Old’ friends. He already has a police record, because of how is is so disobedient to the laws. The only fun in Dallys life was picking up girls and finding some new ways to break the law. He never cared for anyone but Johnny, and once Johnny had died that was the end. Dallas did not know how else to handle himself. When Darry got the phone call Ponyboys thoughts scattered then came to a conclusion, “But I knew that was what he wanted, even as the lot echoed with the cracks of the shots, even as I begged silently please, not him… not him and Johnny both - I knew he would be dead, because Dally Winston wanted to be dead and he always got what he wanted”(154). Like Pony said, Dally always got what he wanted and he definitely did. Once Johnny died he did not care about anything in life. Conversely, Johnny had a lot to live for. He is only sixteen years old and he has a lot ahead of him. Johnny was very law abiding he tried hard not to get into any trouble or break any laws. Now that he has made that mistake with Bob he thinks he has ruined his whole life. He has not, there is much more ahead of him. Johnny had died a hero by saving all those kids at the burning church. He finally understands, “Listen, I don’t mind dying now. It's worth it, It’s worth saving those kids. Their lives are
In the poem "The Hangman," by Maurice Ogden, the poet explained that a person could resolve a situation by showing acts of courage. One day, a hangman came to a town and built a scaffold on the courthouse square. The townspeople asked him which criminal would be hanged and he replied with a mischievous grin and a glint in his eye that it would be the person who will continually make his job easier. When the hangman spotted a foreign person, he chose him to be the first victim. The townsfolk were relieved that they weren't picked to be hanged, and that the gallows frame would be gone the next day. However, after they saw that it was still there, the hangman said that the foreigner was used to determine how strong the hemp was. When a man cri...
The story concludes not only with two physical killings but the moral death of the character as well. The character was apt to take the law into his own hand to avenge and protect his family. There is no abstract moral judgment but it is clear that the psychic price of the action comes high.
Tell them not to kill me!, by Juan Rulfo, is an interesting work of fiction that addresses mainly selfishness and the realities of a self-centered life, and empathy. (Transition, have to text friend.) Many scenes in this short story portray this theme of selfishness, but few show it better than the very first scene in which Juan Rulfo describes the protagonist, Juvencio, begging his son, Justino, to put himself in harm's way to save his own life, with no thoughts of the safety of his son or his son's family. There are also quite a few scenes in this story that portray the theme of empathy. One of the scenes that shows this best is when Juvencio thinks about the crime he committed, and shows how much of a lack of empathy he feels for any human life other than his own. Another scene that shows this well is the scene in which Juvencio talks about his crime with such lack of empathy for any other people and only trying to justify it shows a total lack of caring for any other human life but his own. Another scene that shows Juan Rulfo’s theme of empathy is the scene in which Don Lupe’s son orders that Juvencio be killed. Tell them not to kill me! is about selfishness and the realities of living a self-centered life, and empathy.
What good would it do if both of them died, then not one but two families would’ve lost a child. He tried his hardest to save K. and to save himself. Even though that’s true, the narrator still deals with survivor guilt. It begins to affect his life, for something he couldn’t have prevented. He starts having nightmares and can’t stand to live at home. “I stayed away from my hometown for forty years. I never went to that seashore--or any other,” (Murakami 139). There is nothing he could’ve done, yet he still blames himself. “A person feels guilty about what they perceive they could or should have done,” (What’sYourGrief?). The narrator on goes survivor’s guilt because he feels guilty that he should’ve done something differently so K. would be alive. The narrator should condone that it wasn’t his fault and forgive
The Gift of Sweat” by Rebecca Brown, tells the story of a man with a mysterious disease. The story is told from what we presume is one of the man’s friends. We read about her routine with Rick, the man that is ill, and his happenings. This story is intriguing because it is very poignant and mysterious. This makes us wonder about this character's lives and why the outcome of the story is what it ended up to be.. What makes this story so pleasurable is the writing style. The way the author made us predict what Rick’s illness was, made the story that much more interesting. The way Brown played with context clues made the readers interested, it made the readers want more and figure out more about the characters, and the story itself.
“To cover my nervousness I went on honing the razor”. This statement shows how the barber was nervous because of his new customer in Hernando Tellez's short story, Lather and Nothing Else. Set in an old south western town in the 1800’s, the story begins with a barber sharpening his razor when a customer enters his shop, it is Lt. Torres. Lt. Torres’s job is to hunt down and kill revolutionaries. The barber is a revolutionary and he has to keep himself calm around the Lt. The barber contemplating to kill Torres or not, illustrates author Tellez’s theme that it is not worth killing to lose everything you have worked hard to get.

How does William Dean Howells convey his work as an American Realist writer? American realism writers demonstrated realism in a variety of ways; by the life experiences they had and how they dealt with current social, personal, and economic issues. William Dean Howells was an American Realist writer that wrote about plausible problems that reflected actual issues that occurred at the present time. Labor problems, such as the Haymarket Incident: the wrongful persecution of radicals in 1887, were pivotal roles that gradually characterized Howells realism as well as economic issues. Another factor that affected the economy, which brought about the author’s evidence of realism, was the post-Civil War. Howells wanted to show a “clear vision of joys
...rts up left… Louis barely turns, then walks off and exits down right. But like a tragic hero – having an excessive amount of pride – he continues to fight his point and again becomes obsessive – He is incensing himself and little bits of laughter even escape him as his eyes are murderous…). It is also ironic that Eddie is stabbed by his own knife, which emphasises the theme of self-destruction represented in many tragedies (Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, etc.). Marco also importantly stresses to us the difference between the two societies (“In my country [Eddie] would be dead now…”). This highlights the key difference between the cultures in Italy and America (as ‘snitching’ would not be killed over). Overall, the two parts in this play emphasise the rise and fall of the tragic hero, like many tragedies.
In “But What Do You Mean?” Tannen refers to “the one-up” position as something that men try to achieve in a conversation. Tannen also refers to the one down position that is trying to be avoided. Both potential outcomes one might have in a conversation make me think that she is referring to the need for a man to be dominant in the conversation. Consequently achieving a one-up position you are proving that your job, relationship, social life etc. is better than the person you are having a conversation with. For example if you stated that your promotion was better than the person you are having the conversation with. Tannen later ties this to the fact that when a woman and a man are having a conversation the woman is at a disadvantage because
The laughter filled the room as I ran through the house running away from my uncle who was close behind me. I thought that I finally escaped from him but as soon as I turned around I was blasted with shaving cream that placed a thick, fluffy layer onto my clothes. I knew from then on there was going to be a revenge fight with the famous barbasol shaving cream. Later on that day, he decided to take a nap and did not worry about anything that happened earlier that day. I knew this was the perfect time to get revenge and cover him in shaving cream like he did to me. I tiptoed into my grandparents bathroom and carefully opened their linen closet. There was five aerosol cans of barbasol shaving cream that were all different types. I decided to choose the extra moisturizing shaving cream to use on my uncle. After I made my decision, I closed the closet door as quietly as I could and then tiptoed back out to the living room where my uncle was curled up on the couch. I sprayed the shaving cream into my uncle’s hands and it foamed over onto his stomach. I grabbed one of my grandma’s cat’s toys that had feathers on the end of it and began slowly tickling his nose
Anton Chigurh does not deal out death at complete random. In fact, he sometimes seems hesitant to kill, especially during his encounters with the gas station owner and Carla Jean. This leads him to offer a coin toss to his potential victims, so that they have a fair chance at surviving. "That's the best I can do," he tells Carla Jean. Chigurh knows that he cannot let her go, but wants her to understand that fact as well. So he uses the coin toss show her that she was destined to die in that moment and that he was destined to be the one to pull to the trigger. He views himself as an instrument of fate, not a grim reaper.
Shave the head, and tie the beard; and say it was the desire of the penitent to be so bared before his death: you know the course is common. If any thing fall to you upon this, more than a thanks and good fortune, by the saint whom I process, I will plead against it in my life.” Not only did the Duke ask the provost to go against Angelo’s wishes, despite Angelo being the ultimate authority while the Duke is “away,” and delay Claudio’s death, but he even suggested that he use someone else’s head as a stand-in for Claudio and to hide his trickery he suggested that the head be shaved as to disguise it. To manipulate not only the living but the dead as well, are acts that wouldn’t be committed by someone who is Just, but someone who craves control and justice and controlling others are not the same. The Duke knew that his request could potentially put the provost at risk; he even referred to it as “a dangerous courtesy.” Risking an innocent citizen’s life for someone who did break the law, no matter how petty the crime or how harsh the punishment, only seems as a selfish
