In 1932, Kahlo produced her more surrealist painting, 'Henry Ford Hospital' (See Fig 4) where a naked Kahlo appears on a hospital bed surrounded by several item including a foetus, a snail, a flower and a pelvis all floating, connected to her by red, threadlike veins. This work again was so intimate, this time depicting her second miscarriage. Rivera quotes 'in the annals of art, Frida is the only person ever to have ripped open her breast and torn out her heart to tell the truth in biological terms and say what is felt inside' (Alcantara and Egnolff 1999:69)
Ester Hernandez is a Chicana artist, best known for her works of Chicana women. Ester’s goal is to recreate women’s lives to produce positive images of women’s lifestyle and to create icons. Her piece, Frida y Yo, contains the iconic painter Frida Kahlo. Frida, after being in multiple accidents causing long-term pain and suffering, began painting, mostly self-portraits, to portray her reality and glorify the pain. Similar to how Hernandez's goals are a juxtaposition to Frida’s artwork, the art piece Frida y Yo creates a juxtaposition between life and suffering and death and fortune.
During the 1960’s, America’s solution to the growing population of mentally ill citizens was to relocate these individuals into mental state institutions. While the thought of isolating mentally ill patients from the rest of society in order to focus on their treatment and rehabilitation sounded like a smart idea, the outcome only left patients more traumatized. These mental hospitals and state institutions were largely filled with corrupt, unknowledgeable, and abusive staff members in an unregulated environment. The story of Lucy Winer, a woman who personally endured these horrors during her time at Long Island’s Kings Park State Hospital, explores the terrific legacy of the mental state hospital system. Ultimately, Lucy’s documentary, Kings
Lemuel Shattuck, teacher, historian, statistician, publisher, and visionary, established the Lemuel Shattuck Hospital in 1869. His plan was the first to identify major public health issues including the recommendation to establish the accurate keeping of health records and vital public health statistics to use as tools to fight disease. In 1869, his vision led to the nation’s first State Board of Health that was established in Massachusetts. In order to carry out their mission, Lemuel Shattuck Hospital delivers compassionate medical and psychiatric care to patients requiring multi-disciplinary treatment and support which promotes their health, well-being, rehabilitation and recovery.
Hospitals are busy places, and with so much going on it is hard to believe that mistakes are not made. However, there are some accidents that should never happen. Such events have been termed ‘never events’ because they are never supposed to happen. This term was first introduced by Ken Kizer, MD, in 2001 (US, 2012). The Joint Commission has classified never events as sentinel events and asks that hospitals report them. A sentinel event is defined as, “an unexpected occurrence involving death or serious physiological or psychological injury, or the risk thereof” (US, 2012). Never events are termed sentinel events because in the past 12 years 71% of the events reported were fatal (US, 2012). Because these events are never supposed to happen, many insurance companies will not reimburse the hospitals when they occur. A study in 2006, showed that the average hospital could experience a case of wrong-site surgery, one example of a never event, only once every 5 to 10 years (US, 2012). This study illustrates how rare a never event is. Hospitals do not want these never events to happen any more than a patient does. To help prevent these errors, hospitals have created policies that, if followed, will minimize the possibility of a mistake. The consequences of never events are devastating and because of this the goal is to make sure that they are eradicated from hospitals and medical facilities.

John Hopkins Hospital was founded by John Hopkins a philanthropist and a Quaker by faith in 1867 and endowed in 1873. He dedicated his life and finances approximately $7,000,000 in cash to building a teaching hospital and a university named after him with designations of uniting functions of patient care with education and research. The John Hopkins hospital was officially opened on May 7, 1889. Before Mr. Hopkins died in 1973, he had committed himself to the principle of “united we stand and divided we fall” and selected board of trustees for the hospital and the university whom he entrusted with tasks and responsibilities to carry out his vision. On March 10, 1873, he put in black and white that the hospital must provide for “the indigent sick of the city of Baltimore without regard to sex, age, or color who may need surgical or medical treatment”. In his letter he also specified that the school of nursing and medicine must be established in conjunction with the hospital. Looking at it today, the John Hopkins hospital has evolved into one of the largest teaching hospital in the country. It includes more than 12 smaller hospitals and medical centers affiliated to the main hospital in Baltimore 226 clinical services 977 licensed beds and 37 building in the State of Maryland. In this painting, The Broken Column, Frida expressed her pain and suffering in a most straight forward way. At the age of eighteen she was involved in a serious bus accident, which her life was marked by chronic pain and health problems. The broken column was painted shortly after her unwanted spinal surgery. The metal nails displayed in Frida Kahlo’s upper body and is hidden behind a cloth. Tears streaming down her fac.. At the beginning she painted herself nude but later covered her lower part with something that looks of a hospital sheet. A broken column is put in place of her spine. The column appears to be on the verge of collapsing into
Aristotle once claimed that, “The aim of art is to represent not the outward appearance of things, but their inward significance.” Artists, such as Louise-Elizabeth Vigée Le Brun and Mary Cassatt, captured not only the way things physically appeared on the outside, but also the emotions that were transpiring on the inside. A part no always visible to the viewer. While both artists, Le Brun and Cassatt, worked within the perimeters of their artistic cultures --the 18th century in which female artists were excluded and the 19th century, in which women were artistically limited-- they were able to capture the loving relationship between mother and child, but in works such as Marie Antoinette and Her Children and Mother Nursing her Child 1898,

A lot of meaning to Frida Kahlo's life is given from the sketch. After the mischance it was not all great that she experienced and the few operations she needed to experience. At the point when the work of art was initially looked it gives an indication of good side and awful side. This can be told by watching the light and dim side consolidated in the depiction. The artistic creation will get numerous individuals' consideration on the grounds that Frida painted communicating how she felt amid that time of 1946.
