Erin George’s A Woman Doing Life: Notes from a Prison for Women sheds light on her life at the Fluvanna Correctional Center for Women (FCCW) where she was sentenced for the rest of her life for first-degree murder. It is one of the few books that take the reader on a journey of a lifer, from the day of sentencing to the day of hoping to being bunked adjacent to her best friend in the geriatric ward. George’s journey in the criminal justice system began when officers arrested her at her house in the presence of her children, which occurred rather in a calm manner, considering the nature of her charges. Shakedown refers to the event of searching every little inch of the correctional facility for dangerous or serious contraband. Offenders are often strip searched during certain situations, such as shakedowns, when all of the property of an offender will be searched for contraband, along with her cell, and body. When it comes to body searches, George states that she could do it as “casually as shaking hands” (George, pp. 65), which can be a horrific experience for both the offender and the officer conducting the search, especially during shakedown when the offenders had not showered for days.
