Summary Response to Butler’s “Beside Oneself” In the featured article, “Beside Oneself: On the Limits of Sexual Autonomy,” the author, Judith Butler, writes about her views on what it means to be considered human in society. Butler describes to us the importance of connecting with others helps us obtain the faculties to feel, and become intimate through our will to become vulnerable. Butler contends that with the power of vulnerability, the rolls pertaining to humanity, grief, and violence, are what allows us to be acknowledged as worthy. She explains how feeling vulnerable is exactly what people seek when going through hardships. How being recognized and desired after going through grief is homologous to what it means to be human. Butler points out that majority of society has troubles locking emotions up in their heads, and explains how hard it is for them to unlock their emotions in the fear of being unrecognized. That to be vulnerable, means to let others into our emotions while obtaining the ability to communicate in order to understand their emotions as well. Butler clarifies this by confessing that grief itself, and vulnerability, are the underlying examples of how we are substantially affected by other’s recognition. In other words, to produce this ambition, we must take into account the affects that connections provide us. That being said, Butler voices that the ability to let ourselves become vulnerable, helps clarify our purpose of humanity, and while accepting the uncertainties, we abolish the isolation of ourselves while releasing our true, individual characteristics of what constitutes us as human. In response to this summarization of Butler’s “Beside Oneself”, I have generated reasoning towards my answers to Butler’s questions within her writing. Though her summary makes many valid identifications, there are still many questions to be rejoined in a more in-depth manner. “What makes for a livable world?”, and what constitutes the human?”, are two questions Judith Butler inquires in her opening paragraph and throughout her writing that determine the mindsets of individuals throughout our society. In conclusion, readers identify with the human form and use it as a vehicle for defamiliarization to show the mechanical functions they serve themselves and others. The characters in “Bloodchild” behave as part of a process and show a lack of respect for their human qualities. As they desensitize their bodies, they allow the Tlic to engage with them in an unbalanced power relationship. Then, the Tlic interact with them in a sheltering way and inhibit their thought process. Through this interaction chain, Butler effectively conveys that the way humans treat themselves will dictate how others treat them. A human being is a complicated entity of a contradictory nature where creative and destructive, virtuous and vicious are interwoven. Each of us has gone through various kinds of struggle at least once in a lifetime ranging from everyday discrepancies to worldwide catastrophes. There are always different causes and reasons that trigger these struggles, however, there is common ground for them as well: people are different, even though it is a truism no one seems to able to realize this statement from beyond the bounds of one’s self and reach out to approach the Other.
In certain countries such as the U.S, people discriminate against others to a certain extent based off their gender, race, and sexuality. Butler states that “to be a body is to be given over to others even as a body is “one own,” which we must claim right of autonomy” (242). Gays and Lesbians have to be exposed to the world because some of them try to hide their identity of who they truly are because they are afraid of how others are going to look at them. Pages100-115 of Ishiguro's novel describe the beginning of a journey to the west country taken by a man called Stevens, (a model English butler). Stevens narrates the novel and Ishiguro writes in such a way that the reader is able to examine intersections of his memory, national history, politics of the era, and the way language is used to express emotion or to conceal it.
Conclusion: In all, racial oppression and identification is a concurrent theme in Butler’s works that have been discussed. Butler’s examinations involving the sense of pride and passion towards uniqueness and individualism are evident in many different perspectives. In Butler’s works, the passion the main characters have towards themselves in an alien world teach the reader important values and lessons against negativity and racial discrimination.

Did you know that according to a recent study, approximately one in ten girls have been victims of rape or forced sexual acts? In other words, women and girls are seen and reduced to their bodies, rather than human beings. Even girls are forced to be treated as objects, and are oppressed at a young age. When I was looking at the first sexual autobiography, Initially, I thought I had very little input in regards to sexuality. Sexuality is the most common activity in the world, yet is considered taboo and “out of the norm” in modern society. Throughout history, people have been harassed, discriminated against, and shunned for their “sexuality”. One person who knows this all too well is activist and author, Angela Davis. From her experiences, Davis has analyzed the weakness of global society in order to propose intellectual theories on how to change the perspective of sexuality. This research paper will explore the discussions of Angela Davis to prove her determination to combat inequality in gender roles, sexuality, and sexual identity through feminism. I will give a brief biography of Davis in order for the readers to better understand her background, but the primary focus of this paper is the prison industry and its effect on female sexuality.
Brown believes that if a person does not open up himself, then he will not connect with other people on level passed the surface. As I have learned through my Ethnographic Research course, vulnerability has the power to transform an embodied text and to knock at people’s perception of themselves. I have continued to notice when an ethnographer is distant from their text and hesitant to connect on a deeper level. As a result, the ethnographic text lacks the ability to evoke response or limits the influence of the journey on the audience. While there a lot of risk and even pain with exposing one’s emotions through vulnerability, there is even more rewards. Brene Brown is inspiring as a speaker because in addition to developing a strong argument on the power of vulnerability; she has the unique quality of perfectly models her message. Brown expressed in her Ted Talk that she spent a whole year struggling with vulnerability. Speaking about her journey Brown openly admitted, “vulnerability pushed, I pushed back. I lost the fight but probably won my life back… What are we doing with vulnerability?” If she was talking about vulnerability, but was unable to show something of herself, her message would have fallen short. However, Brene Brown not only shows us with her words and her research how influential authenticity is, but she demonstrates it to us on a human level. While I was already aware that vulnerability is an important characteristic to tap into, Brene Brown is an inspiration for how anyone can challenge himself or herself to become even more
She states that the individuals who accept this are indeed the most strong because it takes a great deal of strength for anyone to be perceived as weak for their vulnerability. The author also discusses how only negative feelings come from comparing yourself to others who have more than you, emotionally or materialistically. This brings us back to the subject of wholeheartedness and how wholeheartedness is the acceptance that you are worthy and that everyone is good enough no matter what you may have. Brown also exposes what she believes is the myths of vulnerability. The myths, like I have previously stated, are that vulnerability is negative, people can somehow become immune to vulnerability, ‘oversharing’ can eliminate being vulnerable, overcoming vulnerability can be done alone and it can be avoided by not sharing your feelings/ emotions with anyone. She then proceeds to express that all of these myths can be overcome and bring to light only positive things. Sometimes, life grows too hard to love oneself, and instead, it is easier to place self-worth in other people, and to make them the reason to live. In the book, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, Jonathon Safran Foer uses a little boy named Oskar and his Grandma to convey the pain of falling out of love with oneself to readers. After the tragic loss of a son and father, Thomas Jr. Schell in 9-11, both Oskar and Grandma lose a piece of their hearts. Because of the losses that they both suffer throughout their lives, Oskar and Grandma lose the sense of love for themselves and, as a result, place their self-worth in other people. ( 4 sentences)
The fact is, it is good to be vulnerable. Good to feel pain, hurt, and suffering. However, vulnerability does not always lead to pain and hurt. Instead it can lead to joy and happiness. Many people think vulnerability is an emotion, the emotion of hurt. Those people are wrong because vulnerability is nearly just an action that can lead to hurt, but can also lead to happiness. Brown says in her Ted talk, “What makes you vulnerable makes you beautiful”. She is speaking to anyone with shame and fear. This really moved me because the thought that the pain that causes one to be vulnerable, also makes them beautiful. Brown also says “We numb vulnerability”, this is true with many people. Instead of facing their feelings head on, many people fear them. They want to stop feeling hurt and pain, so to get rid of the hurt they substitute it. When one feels hurt they will drink alcohol, or take drugs prescribed and illegal. But most commonly, they will eat. This is why so many people are addicted, medicated, and obese. Lives have been destroyed, relationships ruined, and careers lost. All due to the fear of vulnerability and because people want to numb it instead of facing it. After having visited the Brene Brown website there was a quote that really caught my eye. She says, “Vulnerability sounds like truth and feels like courage. Truth and courage aren’t always comfortable, but they’re never weakness”. This is important for everyone to know, because without vulnerability one can never be truly
