In the world created by Gustave Flaubert, Emma Bovary lives in torment. As a dreamer and idealized hopeless romantic, characters and critics belittle and disgrace her. Characters like Charles’ mother complain that Emma is idealistic because she reads too many romance novels that trifle with her mind. Some critics echo this complaint, while others defend Emma against this charge. I side with the latter and argue that Emma cannot be held responsible for idealistic notions she gets from novels because her entire social context insists that she substitute novel reading for actual experience, whether it be sexual or romantic. They are men. Realism is a luxury in their society, a luxury for those who can make their own choices. The men are realists, as it is easy to be a realist in their society because they have everything they need: male privilege, plenty of money, personal liberty to do what they choose, and sexual and materialistic satisfaction. All things Emma cannot have. The men, and critics put Emma into a mold then whine about her idealism. Certain critics say Emma denies the perfection of womanhood by ignoring her physical and social limitations as a wife and mother, that she destroyed the norm and establishes herself as a dreamy and unthinkable woman which completes her failure in life (Siddika, 52). This specific author contributes to the societal expectation of women, particularly the sexism ingrained in that culture: that women are housewives and mothers. With that mindset, the one that Emma’s society has, it is be impossible for Emma to have any enjoyment in life. The men in Emma’s life are subpar: her father essentially sells her so he can live comfortably without thinking about her needs, Charles, her husband is bland and inattentive to her needs, Rodolphe, her first lover is a player and uses her for sex even though he knows she is in love with him, Leon, her other lover satisfied her only for a short amount of time and then could not keep her interested. Because of the disappointing men in her life, Emma must turn to novels to encourage her will to live. She clings to the romance shown in fiction because she cannot find any in her own life. Whenever Emma indulges herself and dreams of romance, she has just been heartbroken. The first scene is after Rodolphe breaks up with Emma, she goes to the theatre and thrusts herself into a dreamed life with the main character of the play: “she tried to imagine his life…the life that could have been hers, if only fate had willed it so. They would have met, they would have loved!” (Flaubert, 209). In order to help herself get over Rodolphe, she has to reimagine a life with another man. The second follows Emma fretting breaking up with Leon, as she no longer tolerate him. As she’s writing another love letter to Leon, she creates an imaginary lover to write to. Creating a man from her favorite novels, a man so perfectly imagined she could practically feel him.

Rather than only with a man, Emma has illicit relationships with several men. When Rodolphe, one of her sweethearts, first begins the affair with her, Emma is filled with contentment and satisfaction, and “at last she was going to know the joys of love, the fever of the happiness she had desperate of” (Flaubert 190). For Emma, the romance is a break from the miserable marriage life. Before the appearing of Rodolphe, she can only swallow her dissatisfaction while still acting as a dutiful wife taking cares the household. The amorous connection between the lovers ignites her heart to reveal the enduring desire and hope for dramatic love; because Rodolphe’s flamboyance disparages Monsieur Bovary’s seriousness and reticence, Emma is blind with the superficial pleasant, does not penetrate one’s true character, and fools with the novelty. She also stated that having a baby boy “was like an expected revenge for all her impotence in the past”. (Flaubert Part II Page 357) Soon after giving birth, Emma heard the news that unfortunately the baby was a girl she “turned her head away and fainted”. (Page 358) She felt a sense of disappointment and let down by the world, as all her dreams have disperse. Being that she didn’t got the chance to develop her mind as she was growing, she isn’t aware of how to treat a child so she neglect her child because it is not the gender in which she wanted. However, if she had not have this child, it would be better for Charles because he would not have to be suffering the grievance she have due to the fact that she did not get what she wanted.

Sigmund Freud, the founder of modern day psychology and psychoanalysis, described human consciousness as the combination of three elements, id, ego and superego. The id is what controls our personal desires, the superego controls our ideas about where we fit in society and the ego is in between these two elements balancing their effects to help us make rational decisions. Despite the fact that these theories were developed well after Flaubert wrote Madame Bovary or Tolstoy wrote The Death of Ivan Ilych the main characters of each (Emma and Ivan) both represent people who have become dominated by one aspect of their subconscious. Whereas Emma is dominated by her id, seeking only selfish pleasures in life, Ivan is dominated by his superego, letting society's standards run his life for him. Even though there is this major difference in their subconscious motivations, both Ivan and Emma are seeking essentially the same thing: fulfillment in life. To Emma this means romantic escapades with Dukes in the royal court, but to Ivan fulfillment in life is marked by proper career progression and a stable position in society. While depicting the provincial manners, customs, codes and norms, the novel puts great emphasis on its protagonist, Emma Bovary who is a representative of a provincial woman. Concerning the fundamental typicality in Emma Bovary’s story, Flaubert points out: “My poor Bovary is no doubt suffering and weeping at this very moment in twenty French villages at once.” (Heath, 54). Yet, Emma Bovary’s story emerges as a result of her difference from the rest of the society she lives in. She is in conflict with her mediocre and tedious surroundings in respect of the responses she makes to the world she lives in. Among the three basic responses made by human beings, Emma’s response is “dreaming of an impossible absolute” while others around her “unquestionably accept things as they are” or “coldly and practically profiteer from whatever circumstances they meet.” (Fairlie, 33). However, Emma’s pursuit of ideals which leads to the imagining of passion, luxury and ecstasy prevents her from seeing the world in a realistic perspective or causes her to confuse reality and imagination with each other.

In the end, she finally stops matchmaking others and marries Mr. Knightley, who was perfect for her all along.
