Eat Right Be Bright is our healthy eating co-operative programme based in QMUniville. Upon planning this Co-operative the group conducted research into the benefits it could offer. In doing so we focused on one family in particular and how it would help them specifically. Finally we considered the potential of various venues and their overall suitability for the project’ and also the resources that would be required to run such an initiative and whether or not it would meet the needs of the community. The initiative, Eat Right Be Bright, is a healthy eating co-operative aimed at those who are less affluent and struggle to eat healthily because of it. Erikson first put his theory into words in 1950 in an article entitled Eight ages of Man (Erikson, 1950). These ages are expanded into more detailed ‘stages ' from Freud 's Psychosexual Stages of Development, as Erikson widens them and goes into much more detail about the tasks that the individual feels they need to perform depending on what stage they are at. We chose Portobello as it is the largest school in Edinburgh with 1400 pupils and has a wide range of choices or lunch times close to the school. I.e Portobello High Street, a local Tesco and a Canteen within the school. We arranged with the depute head of the school to go down and meet with a group of 3rd year pupils and asked them to fill out an anonymous questionnaire [APPENDIX-2] to give us an indication of their feelings about healthy eating and how they had their dinner at home. We then had a chat about the questions with them and received extremely encouraging and positive feedback from the sample. The Majority of the Participants agreed that if healthy food appeared to be cheaper they felt more people would purchase it. This is exactly what the recipe book aims to do. Erik Erikson was a German-born American developmental psychologist and psychoanalyst. Born on June 15, 1902 in Frankfurt, Germany, Erikson is well known for his theory of psychosocial development of human beings. He was very interested in how children socialize and how it affects them. Instead of taking science courses during high school, such as biology or chemistry, he took a variety of languages. After high school, he was intrigued by art and went traveling around Europe. In 1933, Erikson came to the U.S. and became Boston’s first child analyst and obtained a position at the Harvard Medical School. Later he then was admitted to other institutes such as Yale, Berkeley, and the Menninger Foundation. Erikson died on May 12 in Harwich, MA. Erikson’s theory of the eight stages of psychosocial development came from the idea of Freud’s psychosexual stages.
There is no surprise that food is important in all aspects of our lives—it is shared amongst families, celebrated as a major part of our culture, and crucial to our daily routine that keeps us fit, healthy, and active. Today’s western culture glorifies a skewed perspective on how food is supposed to fit into our lives. Somehow this perception has led us to believe we no longer have the time or money it takes to prepare a wholesome, healthy meal that is shared at the dinner table with family. Instead, we are trained to want a meal that is fast, cheap, and easy. This meal is usually highly processed and filled with sugars and fats. This has led us to a problem of epidemic proportions characterized by the rapid increase in obesity and diabetes.
Eric Erikson was one of the most famous theorists of the twentieth century; he created many theories. One of the most talked about theories is his theory of psychosocial development. This is a theory that describes stages in which an individual should pass as they are going through life. His theory includes nine stages all together. The original theory only included eight stages but Erikson‘s wife found a ninth stage and published it after his death. The nine stages include: trust vs. mistrust, autonomy vs. shame and doubt, initiative vs. guilt, industry vs. inferiority, identity vs. identity confusion, intimacy vs. isolation, generativity vs. stagnation, integrity vs. despair, and hope and faith vs. despair (Crandell and Crandell, p.35-36)).
Erikson’s stages of psychosocial development were complex, but simple. It is something everyone will go through and experiences will always be different. The lack of reinforcement to the positive aspects of his stages can lead to quite a disaster. Surprisingly, previous stages are highly influential to the proceeding stage. During the state that Freud considers the oral stage, Erikson says that babies learn to trust or mistrust someone to care for their needs. Erikson next stage which is paralell to Freud’s anal stage called the autonomy vesus shame and doubt. During this particular time, children either learn to become self sufficent or lack confidence in their own abilities. Next stage is the initiative versus guilt stage. In my opinion, this stage determines the maturity and influence of a person’s parents. With Freuds and Erikson ideas both in mind, the industy vs inferiority stage is similar to the latency. During adolescenes, according to Erikson adolescents try to figure out who they are sexually, politicall and vocationally. The next stages of itimacy versus isolation is a build on from the previous stage. During this time, a person has pretty much accepted who they are and accepted or isolated from others. The next two stages reaches beyond the depth of Freud’s ideas. According to Erikson, generativity versus stagnation develops which occurs during the middle age of adulthood. While in this stage, a person with find a way to be productive or contribute to others or become complacent and stagnate with their lives. His belief was that each human developed their own personality through a series of stages and these stages developed due to the social experiences that one experienced through life. According to Erikson, there are eight stages and each stage centers around a conflict that has to be resolved. Under Erikson’s theory, if conflict or crisis is not resolved, then the outcome will be more crisis and struggles with that issue later on in life (Domino & Affonso, 2011).
Erikson’s theory has some limitations. It seems to focus mainly on childhood, even though it does span the entire life. Another limitation in the theory is how it is applied to other cultures. Each culture is in its own category and has a different way of doing things. Erikson’s stages are rather concrete, whereas numerous cultures vary in ages of toilet training, breastfeeding, and even marriage. Since Erikson’s theory has rather concrete stages, how would these types of cultures fit into his model? Yet another limitation to Erikson’s theory is how can one resolve an issue within a certain stage? These are unlimited examples of both strength and weaknesses.

But, Freud would argue that most development occurs during the earlier period of an individual’s life. Freud’s psychosexual stages comprised of five stages that ends in puberty. Erikson’s first few psychosocial stages are somewhat similar to that of Freud’s stages one to three but Erikson further expands his developmental stages to eight, covering old age.
