A North Carolina rapper named Jermaine Lamar Cole released his first mixtape called The Come up in May of 2007. The mixtape included a song that had a deep and thoughtful meaning, that song was called "Can 't Cry". In the song J Cole tells us about his life and how he goes through some tough times. He describes what is important to him now he is a grown man and what his goals are which he plans to achieve but gets sidetracked by the world we live in. In this essay I will first explain my definition of what the audiences are and then another sources and finally J Coles own definition from the song. Although, not everyone’s idea of the definitions may be the same as mine but my definitions offer an analysis of his song “Can’t Cry”. According, to urban dictionary the definition of a real man is someone “who has manners, is polite, and considerate. He is honest, open and true to himself, he respects women and shows appreciation for all his blessings.” However, in J Cole’s song he defines a man as someone who shows not only weakness but also strength. He starts the song off in his first verse by talking about the young him when he was fragile and skinny “Birds chest, legs skinny.” He uses this lyric to similarly compare himself to a bird’s structure which is also fragile. Then, later on as the song progresses he goes more into “It’s enough to make a nigga cry, but I can’t though” This is where he transitions into someone he wants to be by saying, “but i can’t though,” because if he cries it will be as if hope is lost, which he won’t let anyone believe is true. This is something that society has stereotyped about a man by saying he must be strong since a man is supposed to be the head of the household who can’t show any weakness and if he does, it would be as if he was letting down his family and those who believed and looked up to him. He talks about them in the song, defining what they are and how they are viewed in society, which was important to know because of what society is today. He talks about how hard it is for those audiences to fit into society, with racial difference and some having more of an advantage over others. The song is all about struggles and how J Cole pushes through them to not show failure but rather strength by not crying. He sings this to let everyone know they aren’t the only ones feeling like this, like the world is falling apart. In Fires in the Mirror, people from different communities in Crown Heights are interviewed on various subjects after the riot that erupted in 1991 between Jewish and Black groups, and in these interviews it is obvious that specific communities develop unique styles of language in order to unite all the members of their particular group. In several of the interviews a poetic form of language, rap, is used between members of the African American community to express feelings and emotions. Monique Matthews (Big Mo), an African American student interviewed in Fires says that she is trying to send out positive messages to the members of her community, and comments that the people who are sending out damaging messages “don’t understand the fundamentals of rap” (Smith 38). For example, in response to a supposed rap song by Big Daddy Kane called “Pimpin’ Ain’t Easy,” Big Mo writes, “Pimpin’ Ain’t Easy, But Whorin’ Ain’t Proper. Respect and Cherish the Original Mother” (Smith 37). With her rap, Big Mo is hoping to cause the men and women in her community to respect themselves and each other. Sonny Carson, another African American interviewed in Fires says that he is able to communicate with the young people in his community because he understands their rap culture. He says, “I understand their language…I speak their language. They don’t even engage in long dialogue anymore, just short words” (Smith 104). Carson’s ability to participate with the young people through rap allows him to have a better perspective on the tensions in Crown Heights. ...
In the article “ From Fly to Bitches and Hoes” by Joan Morgan, she often speaks about the positive and negative ideas associated with hip-hop music. Black men display their manhood with full on violence, crime, hidden guilt, and secret escapes through drugs and alcohol. Joan Morgan’s article views the root causes of the advantage of misogyny in rap music lyrics. In the beginning of the incitement her desires shift to focus on from rap culture condemnation to a deeper analysis of the root causes. She shows the hidden causes of unpleasant sexism in rap music and argues that we need to look deeper into understanding misogyny. I agree with Joan Morgan with the stance that black men show their emotions in a different way that is seen a different perspective.
To begin with, black people are victimized by prejudice. Society shows prejudice by having a tainted, preconceived notion of what a black person is—dangerous. This is shown when a young woman runs away from Cole after getting off the bus. This situation elicits a feeling of defence from Cole: “I resisted the urge to call out in my own defence” (Cole, 2015, par. 20). Prejudice is also shown when Cole campaigns door-to-door. The second song, Change, also shows the problem with systematic oppression. J. Cole recounts the time that he saw his friend get shot. This is the main point of the whole album and the song revolves around the tale of this friend who is killed. The last song, 4 Your Eyez Only, brings everything back together and tells the full narrative of his friend’s unfortunate fate. While attacking the life that many people glorify and empathizing with those who are stuck in this life, J Cole closes out his fourth album on a hopeful note. Using the perspective of his deceased friend, he writes a song (the actual album), for his daughter, condemning all that is bad and hoping for her to grow into a somebody. The genre of rap and hip-hop music has taken on a whole new persona in the generation of millennials. Fortunately, there are rappers such as Jermaine Cole, or “J Cole”, who work to hold on to a pure form of hip-hop and strive to portray a message in all of their songs. J Cole is a southern rapper with a northern style and flow. His main messages in all of his music is to speak the truth about his life and the world around him. You can listen to all his songs from the start of his career to now and you could understand who he is as and essentially listen to his growth as person. For example, the essay discusses the problem of there not being enough eligible Black men attending college (Henry, West, & Jackson 245). The definition of eligible could be interpreted as attending college and on a path to some sort of success. Because there is a shortage of eligible young men “Black females believe that they must succumb to the whims and pleasures of men in order to find a mate” because this is the image being shown to them when young ladies in hip hop videos do seductive things in order to gain the attention of the a male (Henry, West, & Jackson 245). Black art forms have historically always been an avenue for the voice; from spirituals to work songs to ballads, pieces of literature are one way that the black community has consistently been able to express their opinions and communicate to society at large. One was this has been achieved is through civil disobedience meeting civil manners. In this case, it would be just acknowledging an issue through art and literature. As it opens with imagery reminiscent of the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, an event that devastated the black communities in the areas affected. The delayed assistance in New Orleans by the U.S. government stirred some controversy that led many to question how much America really cares about its black communities. Nonetheless, Beyoncé’s video is full of imagery that is associated with black culture, including historical references to black communities in the south. But what is really important about “Formation” are the lyrics. With lyrics like “My daddy Alabama, Momma Louisiana, You mix that negro with that Creole make a Texas Bama” and “I like my baby hair with baby hair and afros, I like my negro nose with Jackson Five nostrils,” Beyoncé is undoubtedly declaring her pride for her blackness as well as defending her child Blue Ivy who has always been scrutinized for the way her hair looked. Thus, this song is obviously geared toward the Black community which is obvious due to the lyrics and the imagery in the music video. To put it plainly, this song is a proclamation of Black pride and shouldn’t be thought of in any other way. However, after performing it at the Super Bowl people of other ethnicities became aware of the song and became offended by her performance as well as the lyrics. One of Williams main topics of concerns is the wrong messages that “public airwaves” are sending to their listeners and followers. Williams claims rap and other medias are representing and sending the wrong message about African American communities. She mentions that rap music once held a positive message but now rap music is bombarding the public with the use of profanity, violence, and obscenity throughout their lyrics and music
Cole’s musical idols, which greatly influenced his musical style. His style captures the attention from younger generations and the adolescent population, whom also came from an uneasy childhood and along the way lost motivation. “I 'm here to spread a message of hope. When someone is thinking of a man, what do they think? Strong? Brave? That’s what most people think; in reality that is a very false image. In “Bros Before Hos: The Guy Code,” Michael Kimmel, talks about what it means to be a man and what it takes to be a man in today’s world. Men are pressured into what they “should” be. If they don’t follow certain unwritten rules, which include: not asking for directions, not giving up, not showing fear, or any signs of emotional weakness, such as tears; they are considered less than a man, a wimp. A real man must be aggressive and brave, he must defend his territory: status, family, possessions. Men blindly follow the Guy Code, they believe in order to fit in, they must comply and be part of the pack.
In conclusion, these theorists who explore hip hop all have generalized ideas of what hip hop represents. Johnson is more oriented towards the female side of hip hop, whereas Jeffries is focused on the unity side of what it offers and Smitherman thinks that it is a black CNN. Although each scholar focuses on different aspects of hip hop, it is evident to point out that all these aspects correlate with one another. Hip hop is a cultural tool formed out of a need to take a stance on the issues that relate to the black community. And that it’s a voice to relate and unite people who share the same struggles on which to advocate change.
Ann Powers’ review of “Pumped Up Kicks” mainly focuses on what the words in “Pumped Up Kicks” are saying rather than looking at the song as a whole. Powers’ review also expresses an overall negative connotation toward “Pumped Up Kicks”. Powers works for National Public Radio (NPR) and she is one of the nation’s most notable music critics. Just as NPR has a reputation for being very professional and serious, Powers’ review reflects her working environment. Because of Powers review being published through NPR, her target audience would have been the people who wanted a professional opinion on “Pumped Up Kicks”. They would have wanted an in-depth review of the song, not just a surface level review of how popular “Pumped Up Kicks” was.

Eccentricity provides for an interesting story, it adds to the excitement of the lives of those who are eccentric, and adds to the excitement of those who live around them. The Crying of Lot 49, can be classified as a novel that’s oddities in plot makes for a more interesting story. Although sometimes difficult for a reader to completely understand how and why the characters do what they do, the Crying of Lot 49, exemplifies the ideas of a postmodern piece of literature, and critiques the traditional values and ideas of life. Using the model outlined by Deleuze and Guattari, The Crying of Lot 49 is a paradigmatic example of postmodern literature because throughout the novel, the themes of dismantling hierarchy, magnifying principles of difference, and the process of transforming and becoming are present.
