Every Christmas Eve the Johnson’s family throws a party for everyone in town. Their family is well known for the best party hostess and most importantly the biggest homemade gingerbread house. Two days before every Christmas party the Johnsons start making their traditional gingerbread house. It takes them a total of two days to make it and if you add up all the hours they work on it with no breaks in between that would be 9 hours. The Johnson family is a family of 6. The mother and father, a 3 year old daughter named Ava, two 8 year old twin boys named Alex and Anthony, one 14 year old daughter named Amanda, and last but not least a 16 year old son named Matt. Matt always felt like an outsider of the family since everyone’s name begins with an A and his begins with an M. But he didn’t let it bother him even though it hurt. Little lucy was getting very hungry. “Daddy i'm hungry” “yeah me too pops” said charles one of the twins “ ok kids let’s take a look around and if there is still nothing I will risk walking outside” The kids knew that if their father had to walk outside he won’t get caught. Matt couldn’t find himself to keep his mind off of what he has seen the the gingerbread house. So he decided to go take a look of what was going on. The gingerbread father couldn’t find any food so he hugged his family not knowing if he would see them again then left to go find food. As he opened the front door he saw 3 people carrying a huge tub of chocolate next to their home. Emily was white and sounded a little strange when she said goodbye. She had a bag of molasses cookies packed for them to take with them on the road. Before they left, Emily held out her hand to Josh like the night before and gave him a warming handshake. Emily said she would always remember Josh and was wishing the best for them. In the story, “The House on Mango Street,” by Sandra Cisneros, Esperanza undergoes a series of transformations from someone who was clueless about the world, to someone who is experienced. Cisneros uses transformation to show how Esperanza changed from a clueless inexperienced girl, to an experienced adult. As one grows older, they go through self-discovery and experiences that help them gain knowledge of reality.

Gingerbread houses are very creative and decorative. Although they may be creative and decorative they have been around longer than one person would think. Ginger bread houses have been around since medieval times. From what sources tell us gingerbread houses have been through 3 major phases. It began in medieval times. Gingerbread houses was then modernized around the 19th century. Finally, its modern usage from the 20th century on to today. (Ultimate Gingerbread, 2013) Also how we shape Gingerbread today and what kind of tools we use to build a gingerbread house and how they are put in competition.
Borders detach us from the outside world; it constricts us with its walls and warps us into bystanders to the events occurring around us. Borders are a central theme in The House on Mango Street as we witness different characters trying to cope with the borders that enclose their daily lives, some attempt to cross it while others are held back by it. A common border which manifests in the stories throughout The House on Mango Street and Woman Hollering Creek is the boundary between the two opposing genders: male and female. This border between genders is created because of the expectations and stereotypes that are placed upon them, further contrasting the inherent differences between them and erecting a border that causes friction between the two groups. This border, stemmed from the differences between the two genders, manifests in different forms and are broken by different characters in the stories of The House on Mango Street as well as Woman Hollering Creek.
The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros puts in perspective what it is like to grow up in a Latino neighborhood. Esperanza Cordero, the protagonist, is a young Chicana that lives in a Latino neighborhood in the city of Chicago. Esperanza comes from a big family that is constantly on the move from house to house until they get to the house on Mango Street. The neighborhood that Esperanza and her family find themselves in is one where the opportunities are low. In The House on Mango Street, the setting impacts Esperanza’s views on roles of women, violence, and the economy in the Hispanic culture.
When we see little kids running around and playing or sound asleep, most of us think of them as angels sent from heaven. We, as parents and future parents, love to see our children grow to become handsome sons and beautiful daughters. We do everything in our hands to keep them in the right tracks to become respectful human beings. We would want to be with them every second of their lives, but at some point we have to let them go and set them free. At one point in life, everyone hold secrets, including our own children.
In the novel, The House on Mango Street, Sandra Cisneros describes the problems that Latino women face in a society that treats them as second class citizens. A society that is dominated by men, and a society that values women for what they look like, and not for what is on inside. In her Novel Cisneros wants us to envision the obstacles that Latino women must face everyday in order to be treated equally.
