Along with an exuberance of gold and silver, plants such as corn, tobacco, potatoes, tomatoes, chocolate, sugar, and myriad other fruits and vegetables were introduced into European diets. The humble potato was especially adopted by the Irish; Tomatoes, the Spanish; and tobacco, the entire world. Due to the increased food supply, the European population exploded and necessitated the subsequent settlement of the ‘New World’.
Since the mid 1900’s, readers have enjoyed the story of The Gingerbread Man in the original as well as its modified forms. The story has been modified to newer versions, and told from perspectives of different cultures. In the original versions, gingerbread was used as the main character with the story beginning with an old European/American lady baking gingerbread. Now, in the 21st century, children have less and less experience with making gingerbread in their homes and we are receiving an influx of children from other cultures. Therefore children are not familiar with what gingerbread taste like or why the farmer and the animals in the original versions would want to chase the gingerbread man. This calls for a modified version of a classic folktale, which is what the Rollaway Tortilla is all about.
Directed by John Fawcett, Ginger Snaps (2000) tells the story of two teenage sisters after one of them, Ginger, is bitten by a werewolf. The night Ginger is bitten happens to be the night she starts her first period. Ginger Snaps uses the confusing and often scary process of becoming a werewolf as a metaphor for female adolescence.
Due to the relative ease of growing the potato it became the major staple in the diet of the people in Ireland. An Irish legend wrecked of the Irish coast in 1558, were carrying potatoes and some of them washed ashore (Stradley, 2004). The potato was cultivated by the Inca Indians from Peru in about 8,000 B.C. to 5,000 B.C. (Potatoes Goodness Unearthed, 2014). It is believed that the potato arrived in Northern Europe because of Spanish exploration (Mann, 2011). Forty percent of the Irish ate no solid food other than potatoes. In fact, according to Cecil Woodham-Smith, "That cooking any food other than a potato had become a lost art. Women hardly boiled anything but potatoes. The oven had become unknown after the introduction of the potato prior to the Great Starvation." Small land holders could grow potatoes easily ...
Many people know the story of Cinderella, as a 90’s child born in America, the first version of Cinderella I heard was Walt Disney’s. You know the story with the mice, the evil stepmother with two daughters, the glass slipper, the prince, and the fairy godmother. Cinderella was always one of my favorite stories growing up, though I did not know Walt Disney was not Cinderella’s true writer. Cinderella is a well known folk tale that has thousands of versions throughout the world.
The purpose of Thanksgiving in Canada is different from the Americans. But even though the reasons for giving thanks are different, many of the customs are the same. Canadian Thanksgiving was originally started to give thanks to God for a bountiful harvest. This was when there were lots of farmers that grew crops. Now we give thanks for everything we appreciate. Some farming families still give thanks for a good crop.

The Easter Bunny is not based on a real person like Dracula and Santa Claus are. Even though the Easter Bunny is completely fictional, it still plays a big part in culture. “German settlers, who shaped the celebration of Christmas in America, were also responsible for introducing many of the Easter customs, which are enjoyed today” (Hunter, 7). The German settlers that brought Santa Claus to America also introduced the Easter Bunny. The Easter Bunny was prevalent in their culture around the same time Santa Claus was. “The decoration of eggs is believed to date back to at least the 13th century, while the rite of Easter parade has even older roots. Other traditions, such as the consumption of Easter candy, are among the modern additions to the celebration of this early springtime holiday” (History.com Staff). Egg decorating and the Easter parade has been around for a long time, but they still play a role in culture today. Some of the modern additions to Easter are eating candy and scavenger egg hunts. The Easter Bunny gives children candy and eggs in baskets. He also lays the eggs that those children hunt for. Sometimes those colored eggs will even have candy in them. The Easter Bunny has been and will always play a role in society's
History of Microsoft My research paper is going to be on whether or not Microsoft should be broken up by the Justice Department. In order to understand what is going on in the trial, you need to know the history of Microsoft. Without knowing the history of Microsoft, there would be no way of forming an accurate opinion of whether Microsoft should be broken up or not. Microsoft first came into existence in 1975 and was founded by William H. Gates III (Bill Gates) and Paul Allen.
To begin I will tell the history of Lego. Master carpenter Ole Kirk Kristiansen opens the doors of his business in 1932, in the village of Billund, Denmark. He made stepladders, ironing boards, stools and wooden toys. His son, Godtfred Kirk Christiansen, started to work in the business at the age of 12. In 1934, Ole Kirk Kristiansen Company and his products now adopt the name LEGO, formed from the Danish words "LEg GOdt" ("play well"). After some time, they realized that in Latin the word "LEg GOdt" means, "I put together". At this time, the company also has 6-7 employees. In 1935, the business creates its first LEGO wooden duck and markets “Kirk´s Sand game” first construction toy. In 1936, Godtfred Kirk Christiansen takes Ole Kirk 's motto
It wasn’t until World War 2, however, that hazelnuts found their way into the bakery treat that is known today as Nutella. Due to a shortage of cocoa, Pietro Ferrero used hazelnuts in his bakery products because they were plentiful in his hometown in Italy (8). Nutella was first produced in block form, but was later turned into a spreadable paste. Nutella spread to America in 1983 and soon became popular worldwide.
The first edible Easter bunnies were made in Germany during the early 1800s. They were made of pastries and sugar. Around the time of the Civil War, Americans began to celebrate Easter in the same way as Europeans, with children building nests for the Easter bunny to fill with eggs. Since that time, Easter has become a major religious celebration in the U.S.
Why is carving a pumpkin so important for Halloween? Halloween is a holiday celebrated by America every year on October 31st. Most Halloween traditions include decorating a home with skeletons, witches, bats and pumpkins. You may have attended a Halloween party, where you dress up in costume or have gone trick or treating. Pumpkin carving has been a wonderful family tradition celebrated for generations on Halloween. My Great Grandmother, Mary Darragh, brought the tradition with her over from Ireland and passed it along or our family to share from generation to generation.
