Her childhood years were not as good and peaceful as that of a normal child. In her younger years, she had to witness domestic problems between her mother and father. As a result of her parents’ divorce, Ana had to move away with her father and could get the love of her mother for her entire life. And not only this, soon after a few years her father died of cancer. This made her concentrate her even more on her sports and fitness. But the emotional trauma and depression made her lose her focus in sports and then she started focusing on her modeling

In Judith Ortiz Cofer’s “The Story of My Body” Ortiz Cofer represents herself narrative story when she were young. Her autobiography has four headlines these parts are skin, color, size, and looks. Every headline has it is own stories underneath it. Ortiz Cofer’s is expressing her life story about her physical and psychological struggle with her body. Heilbrun’s narrative, “Writing a Woman’s Life” shows that, a woman’s does not have to be an ideal to write a self-autobiography to tell the world something about herself and her life. Ortiz Cofer’s facing a body struggle that is not made by herself, but by people around her. Therefore, every woman is able to write can write an autobiography with no exception.
From there on she continues to talk about her adolescence where she quickly learned about the threat of physical abuse and molestation towards young girls. She did not continue with school pat the age of 9 and in her small job of working in the local market she was confronted with true and absolute poverty on a daily basis. She got pregnant at age 15. At 16 she had her first fist fight with her abusive physically brother. And at 17 met the father of her other future children. While with this man, Rafael Canales, she learned first hand the hardships of poor domestic life. She also learned to assert herself even towards her own husband.

She now reaches the levels in which the people aren’t so wealthy. These people are now hard workers well on their way to achieve their goals. “Now Marta no longer saw just groups of carefree people inside the apartments; at times there were even some businesses where the employees, in black or blue aprons, were sitting at desks in long rows. Several of them were young people as old as or older then she, and weary of the day by now, every once in a while they raised their eyes from their duties and from typewriters” (“The Falling Girl” 2). Nevertheless, she is met with opposition of her husband, explaining that it is “the worst thing she can do”, which strengthens the idea that the narrator would rather follow her husband’s advice instead of meeting “heavily opposition.” The narrator was diverted from her passions, for they were considered problematic not only to her health, but also to the patriarchal society women are constantly exposed to. Moreover, her condition is deeply overwhelmed not only by her restrictions, but also the growing nervousness that she is unable to suit her role as a woman. Throughout the story there are several aspects of the Protagonist’s character that play a major role in the shaping of her future. During her childhood she often demonstrates a sense of fear when she is sent to her bedroom. “We were afraid of the inside, the room were we slept (pg. 549).” She is intimidated by her personal space because she does not have control over it. Later, she gains control by adding lace to her side of the room; symbolically adding personality to herself and slipping into womanhood. When she felt uncomfortable she exercised her imagination, to psychologically regain control over the confusion in her life. Her subconscious effort to control confusing times were carried on to her later years as she was constantly put in difficult situations, which helped her to adjust quickly to change during adulthood. The dreams she created changed when she began to place emphasis on her appearance-that which she could control, other than past dreams of heroism that seemed so distant from reality. The Protagonist filled her childhood with much pride and maintained a consistent focused upon the activities that filled her childhood. She relished working at the side of her father, taking immense pride in every aspect of her assigned duties. She proclaimed, “I worked willingly under his eyes, and with a feeling of pride (pg. 551)” Once after her father introduced her to a feed sales man as “my new hired man (pg. 551),” the Protagonist was flooded with pride as she “turned away and raked furiously, red in the face with pleasure (pg. 551).” In her later years her pride helped her to assemble strong self-confidence she used in her years of growing. Guzman, Ana’s high schoolteacher believed she is really bright and would do well in college. Mr. Guzman encourages Ana to apply to an elite school in hopes of receiving a scholarship. Although, Ana tells her teacher many excuses on why she can not go to college, her teacher still made an effort in getting Ana to apply. Mr. Guzman even pleaded to Ana’s family to let her apply to college, but they resisted. Eventually, Ana applied against her parents wishes, and she was accepted into Columbia University in New York. Once, Mr. Guzman got the news that Ana was accepted, he delivered the news personally, and tried to convince her parents to let her attend. I think Mr. Guzman’s intervention showed how much her cared and believed in Ana. I also think without his persistence and encouragement Ana would not have applied to college and got accepted into an elite
