In Dante’s Inferno, Dante travels through nine circles of hell. “Dante's Inferno, widely hailed as one of the great classics of Western literature, details Dante's journey through the nine circles of Hell.” (Miller) Dante tells us that you don’t go to Hell because you’ve sinned; you go to Hell because you didn’t repent for your sins. In each circle, there are different types of sinners and punishments for each sin. The punishments can be very interesting, and some of them may not make much sense, it all depends on the readers’ opinions. Some of the punishments for sinners that were interesting include the sins of Gluttony, Violence, and Fraud.
To begin, the sin of gluttony has an extremely intriguing punishment. Gluttony in Infermo is referred to as the greedy people. They flourish in food and drink, always stuffing their faces and never doing anything but creating trash. “Based on the less than obvious contrapasso of the gluttons and the content (mostly political) of Inferno 6, Dante appears to view gluttony as more complex than the usual understanding of the sin as excessive eating and drinking.” (Johnson) In the third circle of Hell, the gluttonous are submersed in a slushy, slimy trash pit. “Huge hailstones, dirty water, and black snow pour from the dismal air to putrefy the putrid slush that waits for them below.” (Inferno:Canto 6, Lines 10-13) The allegorical significance between the sin and the punishment that the gluttonous face is extremely interesting to consider.
Another impressive punishment for its related sin is the punishments for the violent. In the 7th circle, the Violent against their Neighbors, Violent against Themselves, and the Violent against God, are punished in three different rounds. The...

My Own Idea of Sins and Eternal Punishments

My first eternal punishment would be based on people who like to cause drama or pick fights. Nothing they do causes positive effects, only ruins lives. As a punishment for their antagonistic tendencies, they would be forced to fight each other daily in hand to hand combat. Another sin I would add to Dante’s Inferno would be the Insulters. These people would be included with the Fraudulent. They are people who think it’s necessary to constantly make rude comments towards others. As a result, Insulters’ eternal punishment would be to be chained up and constantly tormented by demons about their own imperfections and faults.
