Sermon Poem Analysis “An Ante-bellum Sermon” by Paul Laurence Dunbar is an intriguing poem that I had the opportunity to analyze with my group, the Midday Missionaries. The mission of this sermon poem was to remind the slaves that they must stay strong to endure the hardships that they were going through because just like the Israelites, they would one day be freed. With antiquated diction that creates the tone of the piece, and two Black Arts patterns, the mission of this poem is easily identified. As part of the group, I was charged with locating these essentials parts of the poem and the “fresh truth,” in order to help the Midday Missionaries with the analysis of this piece. The first part to recognizing the mission of this poem was understanding the diction and tone. “An Ante-bellum Sermon” is written in the African American Vernacular English of the pre-Civil War period. resemble the sermons preached during slavery. In addition, the diction takes the poem from a matter-of-fact tone, that more than likely would not have been used, to an an optimistic tone. Yet, this is not the only vital part of the poem. There are two Black Arts patterns that are key to understanding the mission of this poem.
One pattern that is easily identified is that of religiosity. The mission of this poem was to reminds the slaves that God would free them one day, just like he did the Israelites. However, in order for a slave to believe that, he or she needed to have a belief in something greater than his or her current situation. Yet, they could not be impatient with this belief and think that it was coming soon. In “An Ante-bellum Sermon,” Dunbar tells his audience “Don’t you git to brigity;/An’ don’t you git to braggin’/Bout dese things, you wait an’ see.” If a poem was spoken like this during slavery, it would be sure to prompt the slaves not take their freedom into their own hands. Therefore, throughout the poem Dunbar is consistently reminding them that they will have to suffer first in order to one day gain their humanity and freedom. With an understanding of these Black Arts patterns, the mission of the poem is
apparent. In this assignment, I played several different roles. The part that I enjoyed the most was assisting my peers in understanding the dialect used in the poem. Along with providing the recorded reading of the poem, I helped my group with any of the words that they struggled on by pronouncing the words for them. In addition to this, I was responsible for finding the fresh truth of this poem. In this poem, Paul Laurence Dunbar, uses the story of Moses, the Israelites, and the Egyptians and compares it to the slaves and their masters. I identified lines 49-56 as the fresh truth. Just as God allowed Pharaoh to see that the Israelites were born free and deserved freedom, so the slave masters would have to be one day. Moreover, I discovered the Black Arts patterns that appeared in the poem, and I aided my group in defining with the mission was. Through my actions I hope that I help the Midday Missionaries in creating an informative presentation.
Cotton Mather and John Woolman were two men who had very passionate ideas for the slaves. “Negro Christianized” written by Cotton Mather was an appeal to the slave owners to convert their slaves to Christianity. He primarily focuses on the idea that slaveholders should treat the slaves with dignity and respect along with converting them to Christianity. In John Woolman’s work “Some Considerations On Keeping of Negroes,” he talks about how slavery was detrimental to the slaves and the slave holder. He illustrated through his own conduct the principles of compassion and good will that formed the central message of his itinerant ministry.

All of these texts portrayed the past as a place where identity was stronger, however it could be argued that the past was where slaves had no identity.

Plans are revealed to, “hold a separate service on Sundays for [the slaves’] benefit,” in which pointed sermons were to be delivered to the slaves (Jacobs 57-58). One such sermon is inherently accusatory and meant to instill fear in its slave audience. Statements such as “God is angry with you,” “You tell lies”. God hears you,” and “God sees you and will punish you” serve to foster a sense of guilt and fear within the slaves, casting disobedience in any form as an affront against God, one that merits divine punishment (Jacobs 58). The sermon creates an emotional tie to profitable slave behavior – obedience stemming from fear – which it goes on to enforce as the will of God: “If you disobey your earthly Master,” the preacher claims, “you offend your heavenly Master” (Jacobs 58).

Paul Lawrence Dunbar born June 27, 1872 in Dayton Ohio. Dunbar mother was a laundress and his father a former slave, soldier and plasterer. As a student Dunbar was the only black in his senior class, nevertheless he was still nominated President of the class. During adulthood Dunbar eloped with Alice Ruth Moore who was a teacher. Dunbar had no children. As editor of his own newspaper “Dayton Tattler” his writing inspiration surface. Many of his family experiences of slave and plantation life influenced Dunbar later writing. There was often controversy about Dunbar dialect poetry, it was said to cruelty misread black history, and it was written for white audience. Before his death on February 9, 1906 Dunbar was considered influential because his poetry influence Harlem Renaissance writers such as James Weldon Johnson, Langston Hughes and Claude Mckay.
Laurence Dunbar's "Ship That Pass In The Night" is a cry for opportunity for all men, regardless of race. Dunbar's poem directly parallels a passage from Frederick Douglass' autobiography that gives an account of his life as a slave. Both Douglass and Dunbar look out at the ships that sail by and see hopes for societal changes. Although they both sought change, their aspirations were quite different. Frederick Douglass watched the ships from ashore, wishing for freedom and for slavery to be abolished. Paul Laurence Dunbar on the other hand was already a free man. He was on a ship, still more of an opportunity than Douglass had, yet he was still in search for new opportunities for African Americans. The new opportunities that he seeks are upon a ship somewhere sailing in the dark night and keep passing him by.
A deep, religious faith was a saving grace to these people as a whole. One's spirituality can carry them through even the most dreadful situations. This idea is evident when Dunbar penned the lines, "we smile,but, O great Christ, our cries To thee from tortured souls arise." When all else had failed, slaves could pray and feel that God had heard them. At last, their cries would be heard, their prayers answered, andtheir hearts relieved.
For centuries religion has played a huge role in the black community. From slavery to freedom, religion has help black folk deal with their anger, pain, oppression, sadness, fear, and dread. Recognizing the said importance of religion in the black community, Black poets and writers like Phillis Wheatley and Richard Wright, use religion as an important motif in their literature. Wheatley uses religion as a way to convince her mostly white audience of how religious conversion validates the humanity of herself and others. Wright on the other hand, uses religion in order to demonstrate how religion, as uplifting as it is can fail the black community. Thinking through, both Wheatley and Wright’s writings it becomes apparent that religion is so complex,
Jones employs the dynamics of change to his speaker throughout the poem. From an aimless vagrant to a passionate revolutionary, Jones plots his speaker's course using specific words and structural techniques. Through these elements, we witness the evolution of a new black man--one who is not content with the passivity of his earlier spiritual leaders.
