In the article, “Viewpoint: His dark charisma” by Laurence Rees, the author informs the reader on the specific events of Adolf Hitler leadership role and prompts questions and purpose to the reader by using many techniques. The two techniques that the author uses most frequently to convey the central idea are his use of the facts and statistics provided and a text structure of cause and effect to discuss the main ideas and how they were formed.
The first technique, facts, and statistics, was often used all throughout Mr. Rees article. He used this specific technique to describe the purpose for his writing because

of how significant these facts proved to be. The text states “In the 1928 election the Nazis polled only 2.6% of the vote. Yet less than five years later Hitler was chancellor of Germany and leader of the most popular political party in the country.” The author is describing the difference of how rapid the Nazi regime was growing and by using a statistic and backing it up by a fact. The writer uses this technique because of how the reader is impacted, and by using facts the reader can tell the author is writing an informational piece.
Furthermore, another essential technique would be the use of a text structure of cause and effect. By the author using this method it gives the reader more of an understanding for what the author’s purpose is. Initially, the text the author poses a series of questions to get the reader thinking, then, later on, goes back to indicate specific events leading up to answer each question informatively. For instance, the author writes, “How was it possible that a character as strange and personally inadequate as Hitler ever gained power in a sophisticated country at the heart of Europe, and was then loved by millions of people?” Subsequently, referring to several amount of reasons to show the cause and effect of each reasoning helping Hitler’s grand achievements.
In brief, Mr.Rees uses many techniques to convey his purpose for writing. Particularly the two often occurring techniques; facts and statistics and a text structure of cause and effect. Each of these two methods has made a lasting impression on the reader. In addition, it has also helped the reader understand the purpose of his writing. By using so many techniques, the reader now has more of a chance to engage and connect with the text and truly understand its meaning.
