The primary goal of Sigmund Freud’s deliberations is to reveal where our unidentified psychological inclinations come from. In his book “Civilization and its Discontents,” Freud discusses a category of psychological themes regarding how internal influences developed by people’s psyches motivate people to act in certain ways. However, by societal standards, a person who desires to appear socially intact and to be socially accepted must control these aggressive thoughts so they don’t lead to aggressive actions. According to Freud, by these means civilization “obtains mastery over the individual’s dangerous desire for aggression” (71). Therefore, the subdued aggression remains within the individual, as he or she is not able to reveal it, and the build-up results in a self-attack of one’s own conscience and ego. Civilization exerts control over this part of a person’s psyche due to a distinct anxiety that Freud refers to as a “fear of loss of love” (71). Essentially, people act in certain ways that they may consider to be “wrong” and end up feeling guilty for, even if they themselves don’t truly believe the action to be wrong because they are bound to social standards of acceptable behavior. Freud describes guilt as a feeling originating from either fear of authority or fear of the super-ego, which deviates from one’s foundational ego. Guilt in itself is something that a person feels due to acting in a “bad” way or simply having the intention to do. People are not automatically inclined to believe acting in a certain way is “bad” and, as Freud states, the only reason people develop this sense of guilt is once more the result of an inner “fear of loss of love” (71). Thus, guilt is not an inborn state of emotion; again, it is created as a result of being surrounded by and influenced by other humans. On the other hand, remorse is a feeling that occurs after an individual has acted in a “bad” way. Freud claims that remorse is a term that should be used to describe when someone feels guilty because of and after acting in such a way. The most prominent factor involved with these two emotions is conflict in several different forms such as “conflict due to ambivalence” and “of the eternal struggle between Eros and the instinct of destruction or death” (79). Guilt can be caused by a physical thing a person did that he isn’t proud of, or wanted to hide, can be something a person imagined he did to someone or something else, or can be caused when a person did something to his God or religion. Everyone at some time in his or her life has a run in with guilt, and it has a different impact on each person. People, who are feeling guilty because of something they did or said, can influence how other people act and feel. Some people are affected worse by guilt than others, for example, Dimmesdale from The Scarlet Letter. Talked about in The Scarlet Letter, Dimmesdale, a man with the deepest guilt, was responsible for the moral well-being of his people. He went against his teachings, committed adultery, and left the woman to suffer publicly alone while he stayed like a hero in the town. On the other hand, sometimes the masses are affected by one person’s guilt. He was affected much more by guilt, because he didn’t tell anyone of what he had done. By keeping guilt internalized, a person ultimately ends up hurting himself. More than seventy percent of all things that make people feel guilty are found out later on in their life by other people. Guilt has three categories that it affects the most in people: physical, mental, and spiritual.
In Freud’s theory of social determinism he splits the mind into three parts and he named them the id, the ego, and the superego. The id is the part of the mind that has been with us since birth, it is impulsive and seeks immediate gratification and it acts on its biological instincts. “Civilization and Its Discontents” is a book written by Sigmund Freud in 1929 (originally titled “Das Unbehagen in der Kultur” or The Uneasiness in Culture.) This is considered to be one of Freud’s most important and widely read works. In this book, Freud explains his perspective by enumerating what he sees as fundamental tensions between civilization and the individual. He asserts that this tension stems from the individual’s quest for freedom and non-conformity and civilization’s quest for uniformity and instinctual repression. Most of humankind’s primitive instincts are clearly destructive to the health and well-being of a human community (such as the desire to kill.) As a direct result, civilization creates laws designed to prohibit killing, rape, and adultery, and has severe consequences for those that break these laws. Freud argues that this process is an inherent quality of civilization that instills perpetual feelings of discontent in its citizens. This theory is based on the idea that humans have characteristic instincts that are immutable. The most notable of these are the desires for sex, and the predisposition to violent aggression towards authoritative figures as well as sexual competitors. Both of these obstruct the gratification of a person’s instincts. Freud also believes that humans are governed by the pleasure principle, and that they will do whatever satisfies or pleasures them. He also believes that fulfilling these instincts satisfies the pleasure principle.
As opposed to Nietzsche, Freud believes that evil is fundamentally apart of humans and it cannot be eradicated, “his aggressiveness is introjected, internalized; it is, in point of fact, sent back to where it came from- that is, it is directed towards his own ego.” This reveals that the Ego and the Superego are dependent on one another. The Superego fuels the feeling of guilt, which corrupts the Ego. The principle of raissonement is ignited by the individual experiencing guilt. A French thinker known as, Lacan is recognized for bringing back the psychologist theory of sublimation, which explains the principle of guilt will suppress human desires. This policy of guilt in Freud’s ideology is located in the Superego, where individuals judge themselves for failing and feel remorse for their actions. There is no conscious because the force of evil is not a temptation to be feared, but a definition of self. Sigmund Freud’s theories on the construction of the mind are simple, but fundamentally changed the field of psychology. He proposed, among other things, that the human mind is composed of three parts: the conscious, preconscious, and unconscious. The preconscious consists of information, such as a telephone number, that is “accessible to consciousness without emotional resistance” (Schellenberg 21). In Freud’s estimation, the unconscious is the most important area of the mind. The information stored within it has “very strong resistances” to becoming conscious (Freud 32). Residing in the unconscious is the id, which “contains everything…that is present at birth… – above all, therefore, the instincts which originate from somatic organization” (14). Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic theory was based on the belief that human personality is made up of three components: the id, ego and superego. These three components are arranged in a hierarchy order with the id at the basal end, the ego in the middle and the super ego at the pinnacle. The id at the base, seeks instantaneous pleasure and fulfillment, driven by the pleasure principle. The id wants what it wants, when it wants it regardless of whether or not it is possible to satisfy that particular want or need. The presence or logic of reality or societal behavior has no effect on the id. For example, if an infant is thirsty and sees a bottle of water, he will take the bottle and drink even if it belonged to someone else and he did not have permission to drink, all that matters is that the needs have been met.
Freud's theory of psychoanalysis, however, does have its problems. One of its drawbacks is that it is based on the assumption that repressed conflicts and impulses do in fact exist. Today this assumption is being challenged, and is provoking intense debate.

[are] self-preservation, aggression, need for love, and the impulse to attain pleasure and avoid pain...” At its simplest form, this quote perfectly explains Sigmund Freud’s theory on human nature. Human beings, according to Freud, are in a constant state of conflict within themselves; trying to satisfy their animalistic instincts, while also maintaining a socially appropriate life. Freud termed these animalistic tendencies that we have, the Id. The Id is essentially our unconscious mind, it is the part of us that has been there since the day we were born and is what drives our life’s needs and desires. The Id simply aims to satisfy our sexual or aggressive urges immediately, without taking into account any further implications. On the other hand, Freud used the term, the Superego, to describe man’s conscience and sense of morality. It is the Superego’s job to keep the Id in check by combatting the desire to satisfy urges with the feeling of guilt or anxiety. Finally, the Ego, is the conscious representation of the constant battle between the Superego and the Id. It must work to satisfy human’s instinctual tendencies while taking into account their conscience and doing what is rational and acceptable. Freud argues that these internal process that are constantly at work in our mind are what shape humans to do the things that they do. Thus, he believes, the goal of human nature is to satisfy our basic aggressive and sexual desires while adhering to cultural and social standards.
Throughout Freud’s time, he came up with many different theories. One of his theories was Life and Death Instincts. This theory evolved throughout his life and work. He believed that these drives were responsible for much of behavior. He eventually came to believe that these life instincts alone couldn’t explain all human behavior. Freud then determined that all instincts fall into one of 2 major classes: the life instincts or the death instincts. Life instincts deal with basic survival, reproduction, and pleasure. Death instincts are apparent after people experience a traumatic event and they often reenact the experience. In Freud’s view, self-destructive behavior is an expression of the energy that is created by the death instincts.
