Family Strong
Presidency is a very complex and competitive process, that’s why producers need to be innovative while creating campaign advertisements. In the advertisement “Family Strong” for Hillary Clinton, the producer uses sympathy and visuals to gain voter’s respect by reaching out to viewers heartstrings and talking about what everyone loves most, family. With family in mind, the ad is supposed to show viewers across America that if anyone should be President of the United States, it should be someone with strong values, family oriented, and very humble. The fact her mother had gone through a traumatic experience caused the both of them to start standing up for others. Normally, people usually open up to childen and lower their guard due to their young and innocent nature, especially when you have sympathy for a specific child. That was a very strategic way to start out this campaign ad. However, it quickly turns the mood around when it states, “She never gave up, and she taught me to do the same” in other words saying that Hillary has the same morals as her well grounded mother. The ad then connects her mother’s experience as to why Hillary Clinton prefers standing up for kids and families. To back up that statement, the narrator says, “After law school, she could have gone to a big law firm but instead went to a children’s defense fund.” This shows that Hillary fought for school reform, which made her look like she had a big heart because she chose helping out children rather than picking the higher paying job. On top of good ideas and concepts voters are looking for a great person in general to run our country. For those Voters, I 'd say this ad takes the cake. Considering Donald Trump has absolutely no experience in the political field, Hillary Clinton has an advantage being that her husband was the President of the United States back in 1993 to 2001. Not only that, but she was the Secretary of the United States in 2009 to 2013; therefore, her campaign not only reaches out to most democrats, but to some potential republicans as well solely based on her knowledge. This fact alone can be very effective for the legitimacy of her ad. The producer made many valid and honorable points as to why Hillary should be respected, highlighting her strengths of being well rounded and a good hearted citizen, With just the right words and visuals, you can really convince the voters into believing what is it they 're trying to say. The ad was very upbeat, setting the tone for viewers to feel happy and/or good vibes. The producer uses Hillary’s past accomplishments to provide the insight of a respected and potentially trustworthy person using linguistics and visuals. Insinuating Donald Trump does not have those values and simultaneously implying that Hillary, although deleting thousands of classified emails, can still be trusted through her grounded nature and immense care for families. Schroeder and Detlev Zwick claim that “highly abstract connections are made between the models, a lifestyle, and the brand” resulting in a need to associate these products with a specific way of living (25). Instead of simply displaying these luxurious bracelets and handbags, the ad creates an elegant environment through the incorporation of sophisticated items. The women are dressed elegantly in dresses and blouses, adding a conservative element to the ad. The ad presents a rather stereotypical image of the very successful heads-of-household type mothers who have brunch with other elite women in an exclusive circle. Everything from the merchandise they sport to the champagne glasses down to the neatly manicured fingernails provides insight into the class of women presented in this ad. The body language of the women strips the image of the reality element and instead appears to be staged or frozen in time. This directly contributes to the concept of the gendered American dream that urges women to put up a picture-perfect image for the world to see. She mentions in 2005 at yale, her alma mater, 15 students sat in the admissions office until they were removed by police. These individuals were demanding changes to the financial aid policy. What those student did actually changed the policy and made it easier for families to afford college without heavy loans. The commercial emphasizes an altruistic parent-child relationship throughout. It shows all of the incredible ways a father sees his daughter grow through her first years of life and the impact she has on him. Using this relationship coupled with the nostalgia-inducing music played throughout the commercial provides the audience with a feeling of saudade that shapes the advertisement.
Feminist Theory and/or Feminism is the fight/support of equality for women and men. I am a Feminist and I wanted to refer to this term as the best cartoon that reminded me of feminism before I knew what feminism was when I was younger. The Proud Family is a show that was originally piloted for Nickelodeon and eventually ended up on Disney Channel and ran from 2001 to 2005, starring 14 year old Penny Proud, a young African American woman who lives with her family in a middle class neighborhood. The show was created by Bruce W. Smith I believe and was marked as one of the first animated “Disney Channel Original Series”. One of the reasons I genuinely have fond memories of this show is because of how progressive it was.
Hillary Rodham Clinton is a well-recognized woman in the United States. Her great contribution as secretary of State impact people’s lives. One of many remarkable speeches Hillary gave was the “The women rights speech”, in the 4th World Conference on Women Plenary Session where she uses strong words and emotions to appeal the audience. Even though the speech talks about women rights, she wants everyone, including men and children to listen and take action. Her use of ethos, logos and pathos throughout the speech made the audience believe in her words.
The goal of Hillary’s speech is to persuade her audience that her ideas are valid, by using ethos, pathos, and logos. Hillary is the First Lady and Senator, she shows credibility as an influential activist for woman rights. “Over the past 25 years, I have worked persistently on issues relating to women, children, and families. Over the past two and a half years, I’ve had the opportunity to learn more about the challenges facing women in my country and around the world” (Clinton 2).

When she concluded her speech, Hillary kept using the repetition of the words dignity, respect, family and children. Clinton’s credibility is not questioned when she says she has been working on the case, “Over the past 25 years, I have worked persistently on issues relating to women, children, and families” (Clinton). This is the way she knows about women and their necessities, “I’ve had the opportunity to learn more about the challenges facing women in my country and around the world” (Clinton). Her goal is definite, “To strengthen families and societies by empowering women to take greater control over their own destinies”( Clinton). This change will not only affect women, but everyone who surrounds them.
For example, at the end of the commercial, the quote, “Our children and grandchildren will look back at this time… and we need to make sure that they can be proud of us.” (Clinton, H.), tries to create an atmosphere that makes you feel protective and compassionate, since most parents want to give their children the best life they possibly can. Another technique that was used in the commercial was showing the young children’s facial expressions while they were watching Trump discriminate others, and display disturbing behavior while being praised by his supporters. The children in general, convey certain feelings from the reader while watching the commercial. Children are seen as innocent and willing to learn, so when the viewer sees them watching Donald Trump speak as terribly as he does, emotions start to arise. The black screens that contain the phrases “Our children are watching.” and “What example will we set for them?” also sets a concerned tone. That concerned tone makes you question Donald Trump’s words and actions, as well as his qualifications to become the President. The music and somewhat, dark color scheme also create a gloomy atmosphere as well. Some people believe her values are “a result of having lived through the depression” (Harris 673). She has seen the worst and hopes to make things better for her people. As a child, Clinton was “earning merit badges in girl scouts and starring in the girls softball league” (Harris 674). She has always believed women were smart and strong. Earning badges and playing sports might not seem like much, but it taught a young Clinton that women can do anything they set their mind to. Clinton went off to college and met her husband Bill Clinton there. As the couple got older, Bill decided he wanted to run for president. Hillary “went to Indiana to coordinate the campaign” (Harris 678) for Bill. From the start to the end of Bill’s presidency, Hillary was “extremely active in government affairs” (Hurley 204). She “[emphasized] the need for a global feminist agenda” (Hurley 204-205). Even though Bill was the president, Hillary applied herself as if she were the president. I choose to research Hillary Clinton because I admire the drive and passion she puts into her work. She is a unique global leader whose activism has promoted social change around the world. Warren Bennis, author of On Becoming a Leader author says that, “…true leaders are not born, but made, and they are usually self-made (Bennis, p. 35, 2009).” Hillary is a prominent example of a self-made leader. She invented herself as a public figure through her dedication to human rights and equality. Over the last three decades she has gained the respect and admiration of people around the world. She has spent a career working towards improving people's lives.
