We learn from conflict that sacrifices must be made to help others. In the novel The Devil’s Arithmetic by Jane Yolen, Hannah was an altruistic person that always put others before herself. Because of her heroic nature, she often risked her life for other people. For example, when Commander Breuer visited the concentration camp to choose who would be killed, Hannah risked execution by attempting to save Reuven. When he was caught, Hannah desperately tried to convince the commander to let the child go. The commandant took Reuven away in spite of her pleas. She was unsuccessful; however, this selfless act could have cost Hannah her life. These dire situations force people to jeopardize their own safety for someone else. Hannah’s protective instincts
from her connection with her brother, Aaron, motivated her to save Reuven in spite of the enormous risk. Furthermore, Hannah sacrificed her own life to save Rivka. When choosing three girls to be killed, a guard spared Hannah’s life. As gratitude for all of Rivka’s generosity and kindness, Hannah switched places with her, saving her life. Despite the consequence of execution, she still risked everything to thank Rivka for her help in this difficult situation. It was necessary for Hannah to give her own life in order to save Rivka. A life-threatening conflict like this caused her to risk everything for the sake of a friend who had helped her through the concentration camp. From this, we learned that sacrifice is imperative to aid others. Without Hannah’s bravery and selflessness, Rivka would not have lived through the horrible experience or moved on to live happily. Overall, conflict causes people to sacrifice themselves for the sake of others.

The book called “Devil’s Arithmetic” has many differences compared to the movie. However, the theme in the movie and the book has been the same thing: ALWAYS remember. Furthermore, there are many other similarities that build up the theme of remembering. We must never forget what occurred during the Holocaust, because if people don’t pay attention to history, the event is doomed to happen again.
The Book Thief and The Devil’s Arithmetic both focus on the prejudice Hitler had on different types of people during World War II. Liesel and Hannah both lost someone they had dearly loved. Liesel lost Rudy and Hannah lost many members of her family. In a time of fearfulness, both had told stories to the people surrounding them. Although both were not seen as equal in the eyes of many during their time, I see them as courageous and brave heroes after what they underwent.

These struggles caused many people to emigrate from Britain to the Americas.

Hollywood was able to release a movie named “The Devil’s Arithmetic” that is centered on teens during the Holocaust. Producers did not hold back when producing this film as it has been said, “Little is done to blunt the horrid edges of the historical truths” (Applebome). Many horrific images are seen throughout the film. During the making of the movie it was said about the set, “The camp interiors are evoked in dark, claustrophobic tones that vividly recreate the famous photographs of emaciated survivors, all eyes and hollowed-out faces, crammed into wooden cribs” (Applebome). The set of “The Devil’s Arithmetic” is so realistic that it is haunting to past officers of the concentration camps. Conditions within the concentration camps were not ideal for many of its prisoners. The most ingenious points of the film is described as, “…a subplot involving a pregnant woman who attempts to hide her condition from the Nazis” (Kronke). This film was able to give accurate descriptions of how the different prisoners lives were and how hard it was to hide their deadly

However, as the medieval morality play illustrates, there are those that will decide, during these times, to make a free and conscious decision to do the right thing instead of following the temptation to commit a wrongdoing. The plays that have been read thus far in the semester have supported this assertion.

However, I do not find that Lyddie fully understands what selflessness is, a misunderstanding which makes her decisions that surround her family and her safety extremely difficult to make. Selflessness is a quality nearly synonymous to bravery. To devote oneself to a cause with absolutely no regard to his own mental and physical safety is at times a blind decision, but also almost always indicates a specific type of courage. On the other hand, it may only emphasize how the glamorization of selflessness is capable of making one so very blind to the true form of unselfishness’s consequences—a lesson young Lyddie must learn if she desires to use her selflessness wisely throughout her life. Occasionally, one must be selfish in order to achieve selflessness.

Every so often, ordinary humans are driven to the point were they have no choice but to think of themselves. One of the most famous example used today is the Holocaust. Elie Wiesel’s memoir Night demonstrates how fear is a debilitating force that causes people to lose sight of who they once were. After being forced into concentration camps, Elie was rudely awakened into reality. Traumatizing incidents such as Nazi persecution or even the mistreatment among fellow prisoners pushed Elie to realize the cruelty around him; Or even the wickedness Elie himself is capable of doing. This resulted in the loss of faith, innocence, and the close bonds with others.
An act of selflessness is an act done without thought of one’s own personal gain. The film What Dreams May Come has many prime examples of selflessness and how selflessness comes from love. The first of the three examples comes from the beginning of the film only a few days after the death of Christopher, also known as Christie. The second example comes from a flashback near the end of the film, after the death of Ian and Marie, Christie and Annie’s children. The last example comes from the very end of the film where Christie decides to stay with his wife, Annie, in Hell. In result, Bebe’s mother told her she was disappointed in her, then sent her to her room, leaving her alone with her own consciousness, and leaving her alone to think about what she had done. On her way to her room she stopped to watch her neighbor, who was beating his son for something that was seemingly less important than what Bebe had done herself. She recalls a time when all the kids, the neighbors, her siblings, and herself, had all gotten in trouble together and the neighbors had said he was going to beat them all (128). Even though the neighbors boys were beaten and spanked they continued to get into trouble and do the things that caused them punishment, knowing they would get into trouble for it. Yet, even before Bebe's mother told her she was disappointed in her, she felt guilt and remorse, due to the way her mother had raised her, instilling values in her that saying and doing certain things wasn’t acceptable. This is one of the main examples of how there is no specific set of values, and that each family gets to choose their own values and how they instil them in their family.
Analysis of Hannah and Her Sisters ‘Hannah and her Sisters’ is an American film set in the 1980’s directed by Woody Allen. Woody Allen was influenced by a Russian dramatist called Chekhov who wrote a play called ‘Three sisters’. Woody Allen based the film on the play, in which the sisters are close but there is still tension between them at the same time. ‘Hannah and her Sisters’ is a funny, swift, difficult yet beautiful film.
