The Holocaust was one of the most devastating events to happen to us a world. On an ordinary day 1,000 people would be plucked from their everyday lives in ghettos. Over 30,000 Jewish people were arrested on Kristallnacht and taken to concentration camps. According to one source, “Over eleven million people were killed and about six million of them happened to be Jews” (“11 Facts”). Producing movies based around the Holocaust is a very controversial topic. There is the ever prominent argument on wheatear or not Holocaust based films can help us understand the different aspects of its reality.
We are daunted by the idea that our movies in America are not going to be as successful as we hope. With that being said, many movies are made based around the same topic. According to one article, “Hollywood has made

movie after movie based on the Holocaust and people are just getting the idolized version of the actual Holocaust and not what it really was” (“Should Hollywood”). It makes us wonder whether or not we are getting an accurate portrayal of the Holocaust. Hollywood is known for glamming things up and not keeping to the accuracy of events. Some people even argue the fact that, “The Holocaust was a horrifying event and we must remember it for what it was. For this to happen Hollywood must stop making and producing these movies” (“Should Hollywood”). A multitude of movies have been made based around the topic of the Holocaust and the majority of these movies do in fact give an accurate portrayal. One of the most renowned Holocaust movies to date is “Schindler’s List”. This drama by Steven Spielberg is an enticing film based off of ones man’s love of photography. In the movie, ““Raimund Titsch, an Austrian Catholic who managed a uniform factory within the Plaszow labor camp in Poland, surreptitiously took pictures of what he saw” (Maslin). Titsch managed to take photos of the harsh working conditions that many campers faced while they were alive in concentration camps. It was said that, “He was fearful of what he saw and did not want it published so he sealed the film in a steel box that would lay untouched for over 20 years” (Maslin). The reality of the Holocaust was ever prominent when the film was released. This vivid film left viewers wanting to know more about the victims of the tragic Holocaust. It is an unfortunate fact that children had to suffer through the harsh realities of the Holocaust. Many were left abandoned in concentration camps and were separated from their families. Many children around the world did not understand what was happening during the Holocaust. Fortunately for us the movie “The Boy in the Stripped Pajamas” was produced for the whole world to see. This film gave a realistic point of view on how children perceived the Holocaust. It is said about the film that it, “…not only depicts the tragic effects of prejudice, but it offers a poignant look at the evil that humans are capable of apart from Christ’s redemption” (Elliot). Humans are capable of much more heartache than we can ever imagine and the evil that we have induced into other humans is tragic. In the film, “The boy's inability to comprehend prejudice and killing, and his instinctive, uncomplicated ability to see Jews as real human beings starkly contrast Nazi cruelty, brightly illuminating the viciousness and irrationality of the bloodshed” (“The Boy”). The children that grew up during the Holocaust understood that something bad was happening, but did not fully understand the severity of it all. They knew that there was a person that wanted to kill other people and that was the extent of it all. Their innocence throughout the Holocaust, and this movie, breaks our hearts in ways that we will never fully understand. Teenagers are very curious creatures, especially when it comes to the brutality of the Holocaust.
Hollywood was able to release a movie named “The Devil’s Arithmetic” that is centered on teens during the Holocaust. Producers did not hold back when producing this film as it has been said, “Little is done to blunt the horrid edges of the historical truths” (Applebome). Many horrific images are seen throughout the film. During the making of the movie it was said about the set, “The camp interiors are evoked in dark, claustrophobic tones that vividly recreate the famous photographs of emaciated survivors, all eyes and hollowed-out faces, crammed into wooden cribs” (Applebome). The set of “The Devil’s Arithmetic” is so realistic that it is haunting to past officers of the concentration camps. Conditions within the concentration camps were not ideal for many of its prisoners. The most ingenious points of the film is described as, “…a subplot involving a pregnant woman who attempts to hide her condition from the Nazis” (Kronke). This film was able to give accurate descriptions of how the different prisoners lives were and how hard it was to hide their deadly
secrets. We must not forget that officers of the Holocaust were put on trial after the tragic world changing event. Many officers worked at concentrations camps as their job, knowing that if they did not they would die. The film “Judgment at Nuremburg” is a drama by Stanley Kramer that shows how many of these officers were effected after the Holocaust. This film was based around, “…how much responsibility and guilt the individual must bear for crimes committed or condoned by him on the order and in the interest of the state” (Crowther). Guilt has been carried on for decades after the actual event of the Holocaust and justice will always find its way to shine through. The film “Judgment at Nuremburg” was a very controversial film to make with many critics wanting to have their input on it. Director Stanley Kramer was being asked questions such as, “…how could I, an American, try to rekindle German guilt?” (Judgment). Stanley Kramer was said to be, “…more interested in the drama of the trials, such as the complex moral questions that are raised by the lawyers, or the emotional witnesses who tell their stories on the stand” (Lisi). Mr. Kramer was more into how people were emotionally attached to the Holocaust and how past officers cope with what had occurred. Over the course of history, Hollywood has made a multitude of films based around the Holocaust and how they are depict the horrid event. The reality of it all is understood through the films of “Schindler’s List”, “The Boy in the Stripped Pajamas”, “The Devil’s Arithmetic”, and “Judgment at Nuremburg”. These films have been directed towards different age groups so the understanding of the ghastly Holocaust. Hollywood has made it easily accessible for those who want to get a visual of the tragic events that have taken place in the concentration camps. Well-structured Holocaust films give us a better and more visual understanding of the Holocaust than books will ever be able to tell.
There are many similarities and differences in the book Devil’s Arithmetic and the movie. One thing is for certain, the theme in both the book and the movie are the same.
“Books and the movies are like apples and oranges. They both are fruit, but taste completely different.” -Stephen King. Stephen King was exactly right about that. The book called “Devil’s Arithmetic” has many differences compared to the movie. However, the theme in the movie and the book has been the same thing: ALWAYS remember. Furthermore, there are many other similarities that build up the theme of remembering. We must never forget what occurred during the Holocaust, because if people don’t pay attention to history, the event is doomed to happen again.
My book The Devil's Arithmetic By Jane Yolen is about a girl named Hannah stern who is a young Jewish girl living in New Rochelle, NY. She and her family, including her parents and younger brother Aaron are to in a Seder at her grandparent's home. Hannah does not want to be at the seder. She is tired of hearing about the past and is uncomfortable listening to her Grandpa Will talk about his experiences in the concentration camp."
The movie The Devil’s Arithmetic is about a girl named Hannah Stern who’s family lives in the United States after World War ll. In the movie they travel back in time to 1942 to show Hannah her family’s past because of the fact that she doesn’t seem to care about her family’s past. In doing this, she goes through the Holocaust with her family. Of course like all historical movies there are some historical accuracies and inaccuracies, although this is a very well representation of the Holocaust.
There were many aspects in World War two, but the Holocaust is likely the most famous to date. A particular interest is shown for the Holocaust simply because of the unbelievable amount of inhumanity that was exhibited. Although saddening, the attention that has been focused on uncovering the truths of this terrifying event is necessary. Truly understanding how awful the Holocaust was helps to ensure that something similar will never happen again. The book Night and the movie Schindler’s List are two recollections of the Holocaust written from two, very different, perspectives.
The Devil’s Arithmetic is a book about a girl named Hannah Stern who finds herself thrown back to 1942, during the holocaust. She learns what it was like when her aunt and grandfather, as they too were in the camps. If you want to teach children about humanity’s single greatest atrocity, then The Devil’s Arithmetic is the best book for you to teach.
Unexplainable brutality to Jews without an ounce of God given remorse? It’s sickening, and that’s how many Natzis felt. They could execute hundreds of people in one hour and party all night. This is the central theme of both the book and the movie the art, The Devil’s Arithmetic.
There was a time of history where the entire world was watching an unthinkable tragedy take place, the Holocaust. The film industry exploded with the creation of Holocaust films. From Germany to America, before, during, and after WWII, films portraying the Holocaust took center stage. Interestingly enough, America was not directly effected by the events taking place in Europe. There are accusations towards America asking why did we not help? "How is it possible for a influential country to just sit back and watch a genocide take place?"(CITE) How is it possible for a country who was not directly affected by the Holocaust create many influential films depicted the Holocaust, such as The Diary of Anne Frank (1959), Schindler 's List (1993), and The Boy in the Striped Pajamas (2008)? This is where the Americanization of the Holocaust begins. These films are recognized in Europe as being highly influential as well. This welcomes the question as to whether Americanization in film leads to misinterpretations of the true historical account of the Holocaust. Film professor, Ilan Avisar
The Holocaust was a very impressionable period of time. It not only got media attention during that time, but movies, books, websites, and other forms of media still remember the Holocaust. In Richard Brietman’s article, “Lasting Effects of the Holocaust,” he reviews two books and one movie that were created to reflect the Holocaust (BREITMAN 11). He notes that the two books are very realistic and give historical facts and references to display the evils that were happening in concentration camps during the Holocaust. This shows that the atrocities that were committed during the Holocaust have not been forgotten. Through historical writings and records, the harshness and evil that created the Holocaust will live through centuries, so that it may not be repeated again (BREITMAN 14).
Holocaust Facts The Holocaust has many reasons for it. Some peoples’ questions are never answered about the Holocaust, and some answers are. The Holocaust killed over 6 million Jews (Byers.p.10.) Over 1.5 million children (Byers, p. 10). They were all sent to concentration camps to do hard labor work.
“Gitl, she called out, where are you?” The fear. Hopeless. The uncertainty. Life in the concentration camps was never easy. Working hard, just trying to live through another day. Hannah Stern, a teen girl. The literacy producer, Dustin Hoffman and author, Jane Yolen, worked their best to never forget this tragic time. Devil’s Arithmetic and the Holocaust must be remembered in our hearts forever. If we forget what happened in the camps, then we might repeat it again in the future.
To begin with the holocaust had a great impact in history even though it was a time of disaster, murder, and discrimination. It was a time in which Adolf Hitler,German politician and Nazi party leader, wanted all Jews suffering or dead. Adolf Hitler turned everyone against the Jews because he believed that they were to wealthy and too powerful so he wanted to eliminate all of them. The Jews went through a lot of suffering and pain. The German soldiers which took commands from their leader, Adolf Hitler, put some Jews to work and killed others. Many Jews didn't get to work they were killed instantly. All women were separated from the man and woman were mostly killed instantly only some got the opportunity to work. The some ways that the jews were killed is that they were put into gas chambers by tons or shot by soldiers. Jews were also dying by starvation dehydration soldiers would not give them enough food or water. They would only want those with blue eyes and blonde hair they discriminated all the others. Soldiers would not only kill the Jews but torture them for anything they did. The Jews would be transported from camp to camp walking even in the worst weather conditions which also many died from it.
The Holocaust was an extremely horrific period of history. Millions were killed and lost everything, including money, family, and dignity. However, it has taught many lessons. We can study it today to make sure nothing like it ever happens again.
Over the years, the Holocaust has been presented in many different ways. There have been movies, novels, biographies, memoirs, and many more. Three ways that it has been presented has been through All But My Life, The Book Thief and Life is Beautiful. These pieces of work are based in Germany around the Nazi party, and their leader, Adolf Hitler.
World War II is one the most significant events in the entire human history, and it has an enormous influence to the world until today. People’s life had been changed a lot during World War II, and that provided a lot good topic for literary works. There were lots of movies and books were talking about the holocausts and the fighting in battle. From these great works, people can learn and understand more about World War II. The Diary of Anne Frank, a movie about lives of a group of hiding Jews due to Holocaust, it not only showed the cruelty of Nazi, but also showed the emotion changes of a teenage girl.
