Over the years, the Holocaust has been presented in many different ways. There have been movies, novels, biographies, memoirs, and many more. Three ways that it has been presented has been through All But My Life, The Book Thief and Life is Beautiful. These pieces of work are based in Germany around the Nazi party, and their leader, Adolf Hitler.
All But My Life is a memoir written by Gerda Weissmann Klein. Gerda told the story of her grueling experiences she had during the Holocaust. “My experience has taught me that all of us have a reservoir of untapped strength that comes to the fore at moments of crisis” (Weissmann 250). This quote kind of stood out to me a bit because of a personal experience I have had. Obviously girls can be

cruel and mean, unfortunately I was put in the middle of the so called “mean girls.” No one ever thought of me as one to stand up for myself or get into someone's face for talking about me. When I had finally had enough I built up enough courage and stood up for myself and for what I thought was right, and I did not ever have that issue again. I did not realize how strong of a person I was until someone pushed me to my limits, and when I used that strength I had the power to stop it.
Gerda talked about how she got separated from her family, and walked miles from camp to camp. The one thing that saved Gerda throughout the whole book, was the ski shoes that her father had forced her to take along with her. Through Gerda’s journey she said that “Survival is both an exalted privilege and a painful burden” (Weissmann 247). Gerda felt that she was happy to be alive but the burden of living, was carrying this time in her life around with …show more content…
her for the rest of her life.
Gerda had to think of all the family members and friends she lost, while she lived. In the beginning of the book, Gerda’s brother gets sent away and she is left with her mother and father. The one thing that held Gerda together throughout her journey was the love she had for her family, and the love they abundantly gave back to her. One quote that Gerda said was that “They faced what the morning would bring with the only weapon they had- their love for eachother. Love is great, love is the foundation of nobility, it conquers obstacles and is a deep well of truth and strength” (Weissmann 86). This quote does not only apply to Gerda and her family. Once Gerda was rescued and slowly started getting back to good health, she met her soulmate. Kurt Klein came into the picture and changed Gerda’s outlook on her whole experience. Kurt was at the hospital with Gerda every second he had the chance. Kurt in a way saved Gerda’s life with his affectionate and patient love he had for her. Gerda’s life was obviously turned around a little bit after this terrible war, but I feel as if Gerda took the experience and found ways to be thankful. Gerda would have never met her husband if it were not for her needing saved, she would have never had the
family that she does and she also sees things in a different perspective. Many people nowadays do not know how to be thankful for what they are given on a daily basis and I think that is a valuable lesson to be learned at an early age. The presentation of this book for me was eye opening and very reassuring that people as individuals do not realize how good we actually have it. The Book Thief is a fictional novel about the Holocaust. In this book, death is the narrator portraying the story of young Liesel Meminger, her Momma, and Pappa. Liesel lost her brother on the train to meet their foster parents. Rosa Hubermann was her new foster mom, and Hans Hubermann was to be her father. Hans had a brilliant light that shone no matter what the circumstance and Rosa a little more stern, still had a soft heart deep down. Not having much money, Rosa made their money by doing laundry and ironing. Liesel had a thing for books, but had a slight problem that, she could not really read. Book after book, Liesel would “borrow” them from different places. Max Vandenburg was a Jew. When Max came to the Hubermanns one evening in terrible conditions the Hubermanns opened up their home to him. Liesel and Max had a bond that was unbreakable. Liesel always had a positive outlook on life even when things were as bad as they could get. Death once said “It amazes me what humans can do, even when streams are flowing down their faces and they stagger on, coughing and searching, and finding” (Zusak 536). This quote definitely reminds me of Liesel, because of the determination she had each day to make it a good one, even though there was an evil war going on all around her. Liesel also had another side to her that she hid more often. Liesel did not agree with what was going on around her and definitely did not agree with the actions that the Nazi party was partaking in. “Imagine smiling after a slap in the face. Then think of doing it twenty-four hours a day” (Zusak 211). this quote goes to show that Liesel was not always happy with what was going on, but she had no other option but to go on and smile like nothing was bothering her. Liesel’s best friend was Rudy. Rudy had yellow hair and an outgoing personality. Rudy loved Liesel from the minute he met her. Rudy was always betting Liesel to do things and his end of the bet was always a kiss from Liesel. Rudy and Liesel became the best of friends and had a bond that only true friends have. Rudy and Max were two of Liesel’s greatest treasures, and little did Liesel know that “She was saying goodbye and she didn’t even know it” (Zusak 76). Through Liesel’s life she lost a lot of important people. One thing that Liesel did not lose though was her empathy, patience and courage she had. I feel as if this book was presented in a way to help you remember that no matter how hard life can get sometimes, there is always a reason to be happy. Liesel’s point of view on life and this whole experience was encouraging in a way. Even though she was a fictional character, she still spoke loud when it came to getting her message across. She was living her life because she knew she had a purpose in the world. Life Is Beautiful is a movie about a man named Guido, his wife Dora and son Joshua. Guido won over his wife with his charming sense of humor and smile that he continuously portrays throughout the movie. When Guido and Joshua get sent away one afternoon, Dora refuses to stay. As Guido and Joshua are boarding the train, Dora runs up screaming, “My husband and son are on that train. I want to get on that train” (Benigni). Dora knowing that she did not have to get on the train, willingly did. Young Joshua not knowing what was going on, was told that his whole thing was part of a huge game. Guido had told Joshua that they were going to this extraordinary place, and it was based on points each day. In this movie the Holocaust is more so told in a way of how some families got through this. Joshua each day waited for Guido’s arrival to tell him how many points they got for the day. Guido always found a way to make Joshua laugh. “10,000 points to laugh like crazy about” (Bengini), I personally like this quote, because it goes to show that Guido thought that there was always a reason to be smiling and laughing. When Joshua would start to wonder why they still were not leaving, and begin to cry, Guido would play a game. “If you speak my name, I vanish. What am I? Silence” (Bengini). Silence was the one thing that saved Joshua. The day that the war ended, Joshua was picked up in a huge tank, the prize. Guido was shot the night before trying to save his wife. I loved the way that Guido looked at life. He valued each and every second he had. The Holocaust in this book was told about in a different way than what I have ever seen. It did not focus on all of the bad and the hurt, it focused on what some parents really probably had to do with their younger children. The Holocaust had a major effect on many lives, obviously. People chose to see it in a different way though. Many people tell it as the sad horrific journey that they were on, and others tell the beauty of living. There were many points of views and presentations of the Holocaust, but personally my favorite was Life Is Beautiful. I loved the way that it reminded you of the happy times as well. Every person has their own story, it just depends on how you decide to tell it.
There were many aspects in World War two, but the Holocaust is likely the most famous to date. A particular interest is shown for the Holocaust simply because of the unbelievable amount of inhumanity that was exhibited. Although saddening, the attention that has been focused on uncovering the truths of this terrifying event is necessary. Truly understanding how awful the Holocaust was helps to ensure that something similar will never happen again. The book Night and the movie Schindler’s List are two recollections of the Holocaust written from two, very different, perspectives.
The piece “The Old Man Isn 't There Anymore” by Kellie Schmitt is a passage showing that nobody really knows any other culture. In the passage Schmitt response to not seeing the old man anymore is to call the cleaning-lady to see what has happened to him and why all the neighbors were sobbing. “The old man isn 't there anymore” she replied, which I guessed it was her baby Chinese way of telling me he died” (Schmitt 107). Ceremonies can be very informational about the family member and their traditions, people should get more information about who the ceremony is for. The piece uses description, style, and support through out.
Gerda Weissmann Klein is a Holocaust survivor that was born in Bielsko, Holand. She went through the misery of knowing what pain and suffering is. When she was 15, the Germans took over Bielsko and that is when everything started happening. On April nineteenth of 1942, the Jews were asked to move to the ghetto. Then they were forced to work in work camps and Gerda and her parents got separated. Later she went to a concentration camp, a 5 month death march. Stating of what this teenager (now woman) went through, Gerda was very qualified to write this book, knowing what actually happened inside the camps.
While reading “The Ordinary Life” by Barbara Crooker, one is able to understand the dramatic irony of the poem and the irony of her ordinary day being rather interesting. In the first line, Crooker states that nothing happened that day, however she later goes on to contradict herself. When reading the poem, one can see her describe a day full of activities, such as: cleaning the cupboards, taking care of her baby, making dinner for her family, and a few other pastimes. Additionally, Crooker uses strong descriptive language to illustrate what the mother sees as an unremarkable day. For instance, “[...] sat in a circle of sunlight,” (line 9) and “[...] a long slow kiss, tasting of coffee and cream,” (lines 26-27) show the depth of her awareness
The Holocaust was one of the most devastating events to happen to us a world. On an ordinary day 1,000 people would be plucked from their everyday lives in ghettos. Over 30,000 Jewish people were arrested on Kristallnacht and taken to concentration camps. According to one source, “Over eleven million people were killed and about six million of them happened to be Jews” (“11 Facts”). Producing movies based around the Holocaust is a very controversial topic. There is the ever prominent argument on wheatear or not Holocaust based films can help us understand the different aspects of its reality.
The Holocaust was a very sad time in the world. Holocaust was the killing of millions of Jews and other people by the Nazis during World War II. The Nazi who was an army, very powerful and claim control of Germany in January 1933. Their beliefs were that the Germans were the ‘’superior race’’ and that the Jews, deemed "inferior," were an alien threat to the so-called German racial community.
The Holocaust was a terrible time, where the Nazis were eliminating Jews due to a misunderstanding that was passed down from Adolf Hitler to the Germans. Hilter filled the minds of Germans with hatred against Jews. Books such as Maus and Anne Frank has been able to suppress the horror of the holocaust. Maus, by Art Spiegelman, is about Art Spiegelman’s father Vladek Spriegelman and his experiences enduring the holocaust. Anne Frank, by Ann Kramer is about Frank and her friends and family struggling to survive the holocaust, yet in the end only her dad, Otto Frank is the only survivor. The author of the book Anne...
In the last half of the nineteenth century, Victorian ideals still held sway in American society, at least among members of the middle and upper classes. Thus the cult of True Womanhood was still promoted which preached four cardinal virtues for women: piety, purity, submissiveness, and domesticity. Women were considered far more religious than men and, therefore, they had to be pure in heart, mind, and, of course, body, not engaging in sex until marriage, and even then not finding any pleasure in it. They were also supposed to be passive responders to men's decisions, actions, and needs. The true woman's place was her home; "females were uniquely suited to raise children, care for the needs of their menfolk, and devote their lives to creating a nurturing home environment." (Norton, 108). However, the tensions between old and new, traditional and untraditional, were great during the last years of nineteenth century and there was a debate among male and female writers and social thinkers as to what the role of women should be. Among the female writers who devoted their work to defying their views about the woman's place in society were Charlotte Perkins Gilman and Kate Chopin.
The Holocaust was the genocide of approximately six million people of innocent Jewish decent by the Nazi government. The Holocaust was a very tragic time in history due to the idealism that people were taken from their surroundings, persecuted and murdered due to the belief that German Nazi’s were superior to Jews. During the Holocaust, many people suffered both physically and mentally. Tragic events in people’s lives cause a change in their outlook on the world and their future. Due to the tragic events that had taken place being deceased in their lives, survivors often felt that death was a better option than freedom.
During the rule of Adolf Hitler, many children who were Jewish lived a very frightening and difficult life. They never were given the love and compassion that every child needs and deserves growing up. The Holocaust is a story that will continue to be shared till the end of time.
The Holocaust was a very impressionable period of time. It not only got media attention during that time, but movies, books, websites, and other forms of media still remember the Holocaust. In Richard Brietman’s article, “Lasting Effects of the Holocaust,” he reviews two books and one movie that were created to reflect the Holocaust (BREITMAN 11). He notes that the two books are very realistic and give historical facts and references to display the evils that were happening in concentration camps during the Holocaust. This shows that the atrocities that were committed during the Holocaust have not been forgotten. Through historical writings and records, the harshness and evil that created the Holocaust will live through centuries, so that it may not be repeated again (BREITMAN 14).
“My mind was so dull, my nerves so worn from waiting, that only an emotionless vacuum remained” (213). Gerda Weissman Klein was one of the few fortunate Jews to survive the Holocaust and tell her story. She explains her tragic story through her own her memoir called “All But My Life”. Gerda made it through the Holocaust because of her loving family, loyal friends, and intuition of her own.
The Holocaust was an extremely horrific period of history. Millions were killed and lost everything, including money, family, and dignity. However, it has taught many lessons. We can study it today to make sure nothing like it ever happens again.
The Holocaust was one of the most tragic and trying times for the Jewish people. Hundreds of thousands of Jews and other minorities that the Nazis considered undesirable were detained in concentration camps, death camps, or labor camps. There, they were forced to work and live in the harshest of conditions, starved, and brutally murdered. Horrific things went on in Auschwitz and Majdenek during the Holocaust that wiped out approximately 1,378,000 people combined. “There is nothing that compares to the Holocaust.” –Fidel Castro
Ged experiences many emotional struggles during his journey, and he grows wiser emotionally after each incident. At one point he learns the dying is all right, after he tries to bring back Pechvarrys son. When his son dies Ged sees how sad they are, so he makes the conscious decision to go after him. There he sees the boy running into the next world, happy. Thats when Ged has to come home, to do that he has to climb over the mountain. This is very hard physically and emotionally, he has to concentrate and push himself to make it up. In this book, Ged also gets tempted a lot, First by Yevaud then by Serret. When Yevaud temps him he tells Ged that he knows the shadows real name, this shows that Ged thinks fast and is strong in spirit. The second time he is tempted to do something wrong, is when he is with Serret. She wants him to touch the Stone of Terrenon. Ged says flat out he does not want to touch it but she continues to try to convince him . But Ged is smart enough to say no. In the final chapter Ged is wise beyond his years, he wants to defeat the shadow, he can taste it. He keeps in mind what Ogion says to him that he should chase after the shadow instead of the shadow chasing after him. The shadow takes on many shapes of people whom Ged does not like. Like his father, which is about his need to be loved and cared for, Ged does not give into the shadows evilness. He conquers the shadow, and realizes that the shadows real name was his own, Ged.
