Define Your Market: The American Red Cross is created to bring assistance without discrimination to the hurt and afflicted in both an international and national capacity (Mission & Values, 2018). They aim to prevent and alleviate all human suffering wherever it is found, and further aim to protect, to heal, and to respect human life (Mission & Values, 2018). Therefore, the American Red Cross would define their market as every human life. With a value in every human being, they see every disaster, crisis, or illness as an opportunity to step in. Additional, Red Cross is a volunteer-based organization, thus requiring continual support from free labor to perform it's core duties. Therefore, not only does Red Cross's market knowledge need them
to find a customer base, but also to see those whom will serve such services. How Large is The Market: Since the inception of the Red Cross in 1881, the organization continually grows and develops new areas of service. In its early days, their focus was on blood collection and the support of military members. As national crisis has arisen, the Red Cross has responded. Such crisis includes the Aids epidemic of the, need for training in CPR, and most recently a partnership with FEMA to respond to natural disasters. With such growth and a commitment to meet the ever-changing needs of society, the Red Cross's market continues to change and grow. In 2017 Red Cross reported - -they responded to 242 natural disasters, -mobilized more than 56,000 disaster workers, -opening 1,100 emergency shelters to provide 658,000 overnight stays, -serving 13.6 million meals and snacks -distributing 7 million relief items -providing 267,000 health and mental health consultations -and supporting 624,000 households with recovery assistance (Year in Review, 2018). Thus proving the market of the Red Cross is vast. How Saturated is the Market? Are there are a lot of consumers out there to reach? There are nearly 1.6 million non-profit organizations in the US alone. Many of those agencies offering the same types of aid and care that are also provided by the American Red Cross. Therefore, the Red Cross has had to become vigilant in recruiting and develop awareness for their cause. Further, recent studies (Stark, 2016) have indicated the most significant generation populous, the millennials, are eager to participate in causes and humanitarian efforts, thus need to be invited and directed. Nearly 80 million strong, the millennials have created one of the most significant potential non-profit groups in American history (Stark, 2016). As Stark (2016) explains, millennials are the first generational group to be interested in corporate social responsibility as well as humanitarian efforts over personal their own consumer desires. Such thinking offers limitless potential for organizations such as the Red Cross in recruiting volunteers, raising funds, and developing awareness. 2017 Year in Review. (n.d.). Target, the nation's #2 discount chain, now operates more than 1,500 Target and Super Target stores in 47 states, as well as an online business called Target.com. Target and its larger grocery-carrying stores, Super Target, have carved out a niche by offering more upscale, fashion-forward merchandise than rivals Wal-Mart and Kmart. After years of struggling to turn around its Marshall Fields and Mervyns departments stores divisions, the discounter sold them both in 2004. There are many areas of the world where the most basic needs like clean drinking water, proper sanitation and medical care are just not available. When disaster strikes, the people living in these already disadvantaged areas are thrust into situations where death is almost always imminent. Reach Out WorldWide (“ROWW”) was started by a group of 6 men in California. They flew to Haiti and volunteered to help in whatever way they could after a massive earthquake devastated the country on January 12, 2010. While working in Haiti as medical aid volunteers, the group recognized the need for skilled people, supplies and urgency for a faster response when natural disasters strike.
The goals include increasing nurses’ awareness of their roles and responsibilities in preparing for and responding to a disaster. There are web-based courses available for professionals who are not necessarily planning to deploy to a disaster site but working in hospitals, schools or long-term care settings. These individuals could help with the long-range planning of patients involved in a disaster. The course is designed to protect the nurse and the public through the use of universal precautions, protective equipment, evidence collection and isolation precautions. These are areas that the emergency nurse may not consider when volunteering on the front line of a disaster (Stokowski, 2012). Other areas of the course include how to prepare for a disaster, who to notify when an event is unfolding, the assessment, diagnosing and treating of injuries and illnesses, incorporating clinical judgment skills, and supporting the community after the disaster (Orr,
American Red Cross has been viewed as the nation’s elite humanitarian organization, dedicating themselves to aiding people in need throughout the United States. The American affiliation has also held a joint association with the global Red Cross and Red Crescent networks throughout the world. They are highly dependent on the contributions of American public volunteers time, blood, and money to help support their lifesaving services and programs. All volunteers and employees, alongside the generous donors share a mission of preventing and relieving suffering, not just in the United States but around the world. According to RedCross.org they do this through five key service areas:
Disastrous events can occur in any moment throughout our lives whether involved as a victim or a provider of care for such event. The role of healthcare professionals, nurses and personnel alike is important to ensure proper patient care, especially for events that are quick and sudden. These events are categorized as Mass Casualty Events (MCE), and they are known to overwhelm local resources of surrounding facilities, consisting of injured or ill patients in need of immediate care (Smith, 2010). Recent incidents such as the Boston Marathon Bombing (2013), Hurricane Katrina (2005), and the Chatsworth Metrolink Collision (2008) are examples of such events.

With donations pouring in at an astonishing rate, it is hard to keep track of every dollar that comes into the organization. That is where technology becomes a huge factor, and of course technology can sometimes cause more problems than we plan for. The American Red Cross was in dire need of updating their equipment and software in order to effectively handle their operations. One of the public uproars stemmed from the fact that the American Red Cross was going to use some of the money from the 9-11 donations to update operations. It prompted a U.S. congressional hearing in November 2001. Of course, this is highly unethical as these funds that were donated were to be directed towards those affected by the disaster. Another factor is the lack
