American Red Cross has been viewed as the nation’s elite humanitarian organization, dedicating themselves to aiding people in need throughout the United States. The American affiliation has also held a joint association with the global Red Cross and Red Crescent networks throughout the world. They are highly dependent on the contributions of American public volunteers time, blood, and money to help support their lifesaving services and programs. All volunteers and employees, alongside the generous donors share a mission of preventing and relieving suffering, not just in the United States but around the world. According to RedCross.org they do this through five key service areas:
Disaster Recovery
Support America’s Military families
Life Saving Blood
Health and Safety Services
International Services
On May 21st of 1881, Clara Barton and a group of her associates founded the American Red Cross in Washington, D.C. Barton was first introduced to the idea from the Swiss-inspired global Red Cross network in Europe, following the Civil War. After returning home, she began to campaign for the American Red Cross and for the ratification of the Geneva Convention. This proposal, the Geneva Treaty, was signed shortly after by President James Garfield’s successor after his assassination, Chester Arthur. It was ratified by the Senate in 1882, to protect the people that have been injured in the war. Additionally, Barton was able to successfully campaign for the inclusion of peacetime relief work, as part of the global Red Cross network, considered the “American Amendment” (redcross.org). Red Cross received their first two congressional charters in 1900 and the second in 1905, a year after Barton had resigned from the organization. For 23 years ...

... countries. Not even McDonalds can say that as an organization.” Their vision statement can attest to this unique factor of what they have been able to and continue to provide for people all across the world. From RedCross.org the vision statement stated,
“The American Red Cross, through its strong network of volunteers, donors and partners, is always there in times of need. We aspire to turn compassion into action so that…all people affected by disaster across the country and around the world receive care, shelter and hope; our communities are ready and prepared for disasters; everyone in our country has access to safe, lifesaving blood and blood products; all members of our armed services and their families find support and comfort wherever needed; and in an emergency there are always trained individuals nearby, ready to use their Red Cross skills to save lives.”
Specific Purpose Statement: To persuade my audience to donate blood through the American Red Cross.
The Salvation Army uses the Aristotelian appeals, ethos, logos, and pathos to convince the audience that donating to their company will provide hope to underprivileged people around the world. Utilizing the image of distressed children for provides the use of pathos, logical facts for logos, and their company’s creditability for ethos. Affecting the advertisement the most dramatically, is the idea that donating to the Salvation Army is a way to give hope to individuals who are affected from natural disasters. Visually, a young boy is holding another young boy, who is most likely, his brother in his arms. Covered in dirt and cuts, the boys are also wearing tattered and ripped clothing. In addition the boys have no shoes, showing their damaged dirty feet. A bottle on the side near the boys has dirty water in it, displaying the idea of no clean drinking water. Correspondently, the children are sleeping on dirty stairs showing they are homeless with no food, clean water, and no clean clothing. On the bottom right corner of the ad there is the Salvation Army logo. Near the bottom there is the contact information to donate and learn more about the charity. Similarity, there is also a small memo describing what the donation provides to individuals in natural disasters and what they will receive from the Salvation Army. For example, it provides emotional support and helps the injured and heartbroken people. In bold font “Giving Hope Today”, is written on the advertisement, providing the idea that donation to the Salvation Army is more than just providing necessary support and needs to individuals affected by natural disasters, but it provides hope and a future.

Born on December 25th, 1821 in North Oxford, Massachusetts, Clarissa “Clara” Harlowe Barton made a great impact on the lives of many. She was a volunteer teacher, worked for the U.S. Patent Office, and was the driving force behind the American Red Cross. Clara Barton accomplished many great things, but most of her efforts focused mainly on the members of the United States Military, because she wanted to help them stay healthy and serve the country.
There are many areas of the world where the most basic needs like clean drinking water, proper sanitation and medical care are just not available. When disaster strikes, the people living in these already disadvantaged areas are thrust into situations where death is almost always imminent. Reach Out WorldWide (“ROWW”) was started by a group of 6 men in California. They flew to Haiti and volunteered to help in whatever way they could after a massive earthquake devastated the country on January 12, 2010. While working in Haiti as medical aid volunteers, the group recognized the need for skilled people, supplies and urgency for a faster response when natural disasters strike.
In the 1800’s, representation among women was rare and not necessarily a cherished thing. In a time where women were just starting to recognize their capabilities, and men started to cling desperately to their power, Ms. Clarissa Harlowe Barton, or “Clara,” as she preferred to be called, emerged as a beacon of hope, love, and devotion (Redcross). Throughout her lengthy life, Clara Barton worked toward the admirable goal of changing the world and healing all those who needed it. Clara Barton helped to shape the history, and unforetold future of America, by founding the American Red Cross, helping those in need to the best of her ability, and remaining today as an astounding symbol of female empowerment.
The Red Cross is seeking new partnerships with local, regional, and national organizations, in order to improve their response time. One area in which Red Cross is striving to improve is their partnership with pharmaceutical organizations. Often times when a disaster strikes, people are without their medications. The Red Cross is working to create better strategies to help ensure that donated medications are properly stored and disbursed. The Red Cross is also working to ensure that standards are in place for their Shelter Kits to be up to date and that any outdated medications are properly disposed of. The storage of these supplies are properly documented and not shared with the public. The organization has also put procedures in place for the screening and training medical personnel (Young, 2006). The Red Cross is also working to build stronger communities in rural areas that may be hard to find workers when disaster hits. By working in these communities before a disaster, the Red Cross can build self-sustaining capabilities so that communities can be better prepared in how to take action when disaster strikes (Baranick, Baird, & Vinze,
I am a member of the American Red Cross club and for the past two weeks we have been in the process of planning a blood drive and have been tabled in the dining hall so that the students of Longwood University would be informed and aware of the dates we plan to be on campus and have a chance to schedule an appointment when they are available to donate blood. The blood drive will be held for two days the first is on Tuesday, April 13, 2015 and the second is on Wednesday, April 14, 2015. The goal of the Red Cross club is to have at least forty people donate each day. My personal goal is to either have five people to make an appointment or walk-in. One of the people that I am trying to persuade to give blood with me is my best friend Makayla.
However, prior efforts to provide aid in times of disaster have left many in the public wondering what the American Red Cross’s motives are. Historically, laws regulating business practices were established to provide basic rules for responsible business activity and to protect consumer safety (Ferrell et al., 2009). Ultimately, the American Red Cross should monitor and routinely conduct self-examinations of their business transactions and activities to ensure they are compliant. Additionally, they could hire outside agencies to conduct the audits to ensure they are fair and impartial.

On the other hand the purpose of Red Cross is to provide emergency assistance, disaster relief and prevent suffering. Their vision statement says “The Red Cross prevents and alleviates human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors”. The key difference between British Airways and Red Cross is that while British Airways is a for-profit organization, Red Cross is a humanitarian non-profit organization committed to preventing disasters and providing support during emergencies.
The United States has proven its generosity time and time again when there was a disaster wherever the need. Donations have been made throughout the world and here at home. President George W. Bush was quoted after encouraging Americans to donate to the victims of the Asian tsunamis, “The greatest source of America’s generosity is not our government,” he said. “It’s the good heart of the American people.” (Stevenson) During the response and recovery phase, there are many needs. Donations are welcomed and very needed to meet the necessities of the vuln...
Cognizant of the existence of valuable and helpful organizations such as the Red Cross and organizations including in the Inter-Agency Standing Committee (IASC),
Natural disasters can strike anywhere. They can be anything from storms to diseases and all of them can affect others. In the places where these disasters strike, the victims can get hurt or lose everything they have. The people affected by disasters are in need of someone to help them, and that is where I come in. Throughout my life, I have seen many things that have inspired me to go help those in need. These events, such as Hurricane Katrina, the Tupelo tornado, and the Ebola outbreak of 2014, have opened my eyes to reality, making me want to go outside my comfort zone to help others where disaster strikes.
Luckily, where we live, we don’t have to worry about being forced to flee out of your home in the middle of the night and not being able to find medical help. Here, we are able to find hospitals whenever we need it. There are hospitals all around us, we don’t have to worry about finding help. That is not true for many countries outside of the United States (South).
