Occasionally, in a group discussion setting people would ask what my views about certain social topics are. They asked these questions because they wanted to know my perception of the differences between my Vietnamese’s culture and the American way. My family and I emigrated from Vietnam in 1998. It certainly was a culture shock. In addition to the language barriers, weather, culture, but more importantly, there are opportunities that I could not find in Vietnam. There is always a positive and negative spectrum of everything. Diversity in the workplace also meets with many challenges. Beside communication that is based on language and culture barriers. There are also employees that would resistance to the change of the work force dynamics. Training alone may not satisfy the organization need to implement diversity in the workplace. An organization must need to evaluate the diversity in the workplace, and then cultivate a plan that would work for the organization. Most companies now required training its employees on equal opportunity in the workplace. Just like the durian, my Vietnamese culture repulsed me as a young child. I always felt that there was something shameful in being Vietnamese. Consequently, I did not allow myself to accept the beauty of my culture. I instead looked up to Americans. I wanted to be American. My feelings, however, changed when I entered high school. There, I met Vietnamese students who had extraordinary pride in their heritage. Observing them at a distance, I re-evaluated my opinions. I opened my life to Vietnamese culture and happily discovered myself embracing it. `
Cultural shame and social stigma are the primary reasons hindering Vietnamese American parents from recognizing mental illness in their children and utilizing mental health services and support. There is no significant difference in comparing the first generation with the second generation of Vietnamese American in terms of their views or perspectives on mental health. Despite the difference experiences and opportunity the second generation receiving including possible higher education and SES (social economic status). This study will solicit Asian-American answers to this questions: “What we can do as individuals, communities, or churches and to model the decision to put our children’s mental health and happiness above the cultural shame?” and ultimately, their children’s happiness will prevail over cultural shame.
