The work of Ambrogio Lorenzetti’s Allegory of Good Government consists of three frescoes, each on its own wall. These frescoes are called Good Government, Good City, and Bad Government and Bad City. The scenes indicates Siennas environment in the 14th century and how they lived their life. In life under a good government, the fresco illustrates the establishment of justice and the equality of the citizens. There is a school for the children of the city as well as shops for the traders and merchants who are busy at work. In the background, men are working very hard on the roofs of detailed buildings. Everybody is immersed in themselves and their work to keep the city running smoothly.
The three figures in Good Government represents the cardinal
virtues of charity, faith, and hope. A man sitting in a throne and dressed like a king sits above the head of the ruler of the good government. This kingly figure seems to be a center of the common good. Lastly the artist depicts the consequences of bad government. His bad government looks repulsive, monstrous and devilish. The relationship is that sinful virtue governs bad government, which results in a leader, or multiple leaders wanting power. When Lorenzetti depicts the effects of bad government, crumbling and collapsing city buildings, an infertile and dry countryside, an army of men involving killing and unkind actions, and violent acts committed toward women are all represented.
In the traditional political history of Italy the people outside of the ruling class of the society were rarely studied. Only with the use of social history did the issues of class and gender begin to be debated by scholars. Numerous recent articles have done a great job of analysing particularly men of high status. In this paper I will look at the lower classes of Renaissance Florence. More specifically, I will center my focus on the lives of women during this era, how they were treated and viewed by people of other classes and how women were viewed and treated by men.
The Medici’s were a prominent family in the Renaissance, who ruled Florence from 1434 to 1737. They are regarded as being one of the most powerful and richest families in the whole of Europe. The Medics used this great status and wealth to develop an improved Florence, one that was significantly influenced by the Renaissance. The Medici family can most certainly be regarded as the significant heroes of the Renaissance. This is due to their significant promotion and patronage in the arts, in turn bringing focus back to the antiquities, a major importance during the Renaissance period. Furthermore, the Medicis can be considered the great heroes of the Renaissance, due to their significant influence of Renaissance Humanist thinking. On top of this, although the Medici family were allegedly corrupt and supposedly paid many bribes in order to become so powerful, they still focused on benefiting the heart of the Renaissance- the city-state of Florence- and should thus not be considered the great villains of the Renaissance, but instead the heroes.
This sculpture of Adam by Lombardo shows the true craftsmanship and skill of sculptors in the 15th century. It stimulated my curiosity because of its realism and the important religious story that it depicted. After examining this sculpture I was encouraged to explore similar works throughout the museum. I also enjoy the variety of art found at the Metropolitan and plan to you to visit again to wander through the galleries that I may have just passed by.

It is abundantly clear how Leonardo Bruni feels about the city of Florence. In Panegyric to the City of Florence, he expresses nothing but the highest praise for the city. Every aspect of Florence is backed by a clear reason why it is the best, and there is no other city in the world that can compare. The primary function of monumental portraits in Ancient Rome was to honor political figures of power through repeating social and political themes. The Romans expressed these themes through a form of “realism”. Relics of this era were found depicting the elderly conservative nobility that lived through civil disruptions and war, elaborately individualized through detail of the face expression. Through the features of grimacing heaviness, wrinkles, and effects of old age, the Romans were able to express the reality of their political situation felt by the people whose faces were sculptured into stone. Furthermore, Nodelman discusses the use of sculpture portraits to depict the ideology behind Roman conservative aristocracy. Artists would portray the virtues of gravitas, dignities, and fides, through the use to physical expression and symbolic meaning, rather than through words. A statue of Augustus, for instance, displays the militaristic, powerful, godly perception of the conservative ideology through the use of symbolic detail. The Fragment of a Fresco is a piece that is perfectly balanced with equal proportions divided directly in the center. It is an illusionary view shown through two panels that appear as green tinted glass. Within these panels are scenes of the world outside as if looking through a window. Looking into the left panel, one can see a square temple with ornamental sculpture surrounding the roof. An intricately designed columned porch runs deep alongside the temple. In front of the temple at the base of the panel, is a group of men or boys displaying gestures of joy and happiness. The right panel is filled with a cluster of various buildings including a round temple. The depicted buildings display a view of the elevation and complexity of the design of the city. The buildings are painted using an elaborately layered style that utilizes shadows to show the depth of the city. The Republic is an examination of the "Good Life"; the harmony reached by applying pure reason and justice. The ideas and arguments of Plato center on the social settings of an ideal republic - those that lead each person to the most perfect possible life for him. Socrates was Plato's early mentor in real life. As a tribute to his teacher, Plato uses Socrates in several of his works and dialogues. Socrates moderates the discussion throughout, as Plato's mouthpiece.
