Universal and Proto language
Music is an ancient form of communication. Some scientists believe that music was used to communicate before speech. Darwin fist proposed this idea in 1871 in his book, ‘The Descent of Man and Selection in Relation to Sex’. He believed that speech evolved from a more musical way of communicating. He proposed that it began as sounds and imitation of the sounds around the people; an onomatopoeic way of communicating (Finch, 2010). This idea became known as a “musical protolanguage” as dubbed by Finch (2010).

It often known as the forgetting disease as this is the symptom with is most prevalent with the disease. “Alzheimer’s disease is a degenerative brain disorder that results in memory loss, impairing thinking, difficulty finding the right word when speaking, and personality changes” (Corliss & Gilbert, 2009, p. 2). Alzheimer’s cause a decrease in cognitive function. It is caused by a death in brain cells. As the brain cells die the disease become progressively worse (MacGill, 2016). There are currently no cures for the disease. Alzheimer’s affects millions of people around the world. It affects more the 4.7 million people in the US (MacGill, 2016) and over 520,000 people in the UK (Judd, 2007). Currently there is no cure for Alzheimer’s disease. There are numerous ideas and theories on how to slow the progression and prevent the disease. Paleo and Mediterranean diets are thought to slow the progressions. Music allow the therapist to establish interaction with the client. The sharing of the musical experience allows the relationship to develop grow which thus allows changes to occur until they reach the therapeutic goal. Music therapy can be conducted individually or in small groups. Music therapy is used to help those who have difficulty communicating such as people with autism, Alzheimer’s disease, learning difficulties, mental health issues and much more (Bunt and Hoskyns, 2013). Music therapy can help those who don’t have the capability of expressing themselves using words but want to express something. Music therapy is extremely beneficial, especially for people who are experiencing diminishing verbal and cognitive functioning they can become frustrated and angered which can lead to depression.
