What is music? Where did it come from? According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, music is defined as the science or art of ordering tones or sounds in succession, in combination, and in temporal relationships to produce a composition having unity and continuity (Music). There are many types of genres of music. Examples include classical, rock, rap, techno, metal, acoustic, pop and many others. Music is one of the most popular cultural aspects that we have adopted from ancient societies throughout history. Some forms of music date back to ancient civilizations of Egypt, China, India, Greece and Rome. Music can be used during every day activities such as working out, relaxation, for entertainment and also therapeutic uses. Many types of music therapy have been seen all over the world and also in different time periods. Music Therapy was used in the 20th century for World War One and World War Two veterans. Local musicians were hired to play in the local hospitals where veterans that were suffering both physically, emotionally and mentally were making progress towards recovery. Music therapy is still very common today. It gives an opportunity for a musical therapist to work with people of all different ages and varying disabilities. In order to become a musical therapist, a person must have some special qualities. Some of these include basic understanding of music, the willingness to help people, patience, creativity, empathetic and supportive. According to the Cancer Association society “ Music therapy may be used to encourage emotional expression, promote social interaction, relieve symptoms, and for other purposes.”

She is happy, intelligent, and is open to new foods and learning new things at an accelerating rate. Nicholas used to be antisocial and quiet around the other kids at his daycare. However, now has the confidence to make friends at daycare, interact with them, play with them and have the courage ride his new tricycle. His parents describe him as a “speed demon.” Music has helped him improve on skills he was lagging and has essentially built up his self-esteem. He has improved overall and completely changed. Music is extremely beneficial since it has helped expand therapeutic purposes for autistic patients like Ashley and Nicholas, but others that have been through severe trauma, a heart attack and patients suffering from cancer too.

Although most listeners may not have the same technical experience in music as Billy Joel, it is easy enough to see the effect it has in a person's every day life. Music has the ability to pick us up when we are down, carry you back in time to a cherished memory, and transform silence into a symphony that can move one to tears. Yes, life goes on without music, but music has such an impact on our lives. Life is a rollercoaster of emotions and we have music to fit our emotions to be just as we feel. Music has a great deal of importance of many people. It can have a meaning that they cannot explain to others and are able to connect with the song. By doing so experts are able to help patients overcome many sicknesses with the help of music. Music therapy is capable of being an advantage for many individual patients, it can encourage responses from patients that other methods of therapy cannot get from them. Also, it improves the patients in distinctive ways other than for an illness.
The philosophy in which you orient your therapeutic treatment can undoubtedly affect your patients and their healing experience. There are many different philosophies of practice in music therapy and, during my undergraduate studies, I have only been thoroughly exposed to a few. In learning the basic foundations of music therapy, I was taught to practice and respond by using a very humanistic approach. However the importance of adaptability and open mindedness are qualities that I frequently practice in my personal life and in the clinical settings in which I have so far experienced. My observation took place at a temporary detention facility at the Delaware County Juvenile Detention Center. This is the location of my music therapy practicum. It is a temporary holding facility that also provides schooling at a high school level for juvenile delinquents. I observed teenagers in the early adolescence age, between twelve to nineteen years old in a group music therapy. There was one boys group and one girls group. Demographics were predominantly African American and one Hispanic. Between the groups there were a total of twenty adolescents and five guards. The adolescents all come from low socio-economic statuses. The groups were static throughout each session. The boys were wearing green jumpsuits with grey sweatshirts and personal shoes. Before taking Music Appreciation my understanding of music went from very specific to broad. Being a former band student, I was trained to sight read music or search for patterns within different styles of music. Once I began my freshman year of college, band no longer a part of my life and I began to listen for specific parts of it rather than listening to the piece as a whole. Often when I would describe to individuals while I liked a particular song I would use broad statements like, “Oh, I liked what the singers voice did there” or “It’s really chill and relatable.” I was no longer able to understand the deeper meanings that the composer or singer were trying to portray.
I was never the type to enjoy volunteering. The first thing that came to mind was doing work without compensation, that was my definition of volunteering before I volunteered at Bayview.
