4. About Alzheimer’s disease

Alzheimer’s is the most common form of dementia. It does not mean Alzheimer’s is equal to dementia. Dementia is a broad category of brain disease causing memory loss and decreasing of other abilities which lead to addict a person’s daily life. Sixty to eighty percent of dementia was made up by Alzheimer’s disease. But there are also other kinds of dementia. Vascular dementia and Dementia with Lewy bodies are two of them. Alzheimer is a progressing disease. It worsen over times. In early stages of Alzheimer’s diseases the memory loss is mild. Its symptom is easy to ignore. They see the symptom of Alzheimer’s disease as a normal part of aging. This phenomenon was proved by a survey established by Alzheimer’s Association which contained twelve nations. Fifty nine percent of people mistakenly thinking that Alzheimer’s disease is a normal part of aging according to the survey. Forty percent of people think that Alzheimer’s disease can not cause death. This opinion is especially prevalent in China. A large sum of people in China simply defined Alzheimer’s patient as “too old to remember things”. Many Alzheimer’s patients were not discovered in China(especially in Chinese countryside). Families of these Alzheimer’s patients may never know they are patients with serious disease and need to be treated. This phenomenon was caused partly because most of Alzheimer’s patients are old people and the large number of Alzheimer’s patients. Then they gradually connected Alzheimer’s patients with normal phenomenon and aging. Aging actually is the greatest known risk factor of Alzheimer’s. Majority of people with Alzheimer’s are sixty five years and older. But there are still 5 percent of people caught this disease younger. I interviewed my father to avoid hurting my mother and my aunt.

Me: Who was influenced the most by grandmother’s disease in n out family in your opinion.
Father: Your grandfather did most of the works. He tried to be optimistic and encouraged other people. I don’t really know how your aunt feel, but I think your mother suffered a lot because of her mother’s disease.
Me: Can you make a concert analyzation?
Father: She stayed up late to figured out better treatment for your grandmother. Her emotion was not stable. She was anxious and sad. I remembered her crying late at night at about four clock.
Me: Do you remember mom quarreled with grandfather and aunt?
Father: Of course. They fight day and night. All of them think their own opinion was right and would like everyone to follow their advice. But your mother always cried after shout at them because of your grandma’s disease.
Me: Mother always says she was alike with grandmother after grandma passed away.
