Having this digital way of assessment is also convenient for parent reference. The students individual scores are easy to print and also the classroom scores are given to the principal for review. It is a smooth, efficient and manageable way to assess the students equally. Assessments like this could also be helpful in creating a seating arrangement or partner system. I think it is beneficial to pair lower and higher skilled students together. You could use the higher skilled students to help teach other students. In order to have a happy, successful and fulfilling life, we should emphasis our moralities and values both in our personal life and at work. Taking our values into account especially when we reach a decision could be the most important factor that determines whether we would be happy and successful in our life. There are a variety of tests that are used to verify our morals, perception, values, intelligence or aptitudes and skills to succeed in our life. Self-assessment tests are one of them. Although none of these tests will provide us with a definite answer on what we should do with our lives. We can use them as a tool to generate an idea of our overall future planning. Self-assessment test is best used to assess our moralities, perception and values that help to identify one's personality, interests and skills.
Self-assessment tests have been around for as long as I can remember. The first self-assessment test I took was when I joined the Navy. I remember thinking what in the world does any of this have to do with joining the military. I soon discovered that it tested more than mental aptitude. It really showed mental, physical, and social traits that one possessed when put in situations that they had no control over. The tests are designed to gauge where one will be when stuck in a situation that they cannot get out of like out to sea on a boat or submarine for six months at a time. These tests, no matter which one you take, are as individual as the person taking them.
Assessments have always been a tool for teachers to assess mastery and for a long time it was just to provide a grade and enter it into the grade book or report card. Through resources in and out of the course, there has been a breath of new life into the research on how to use assessments. They take many forms and fall within the summative or formative assessment category. Assessments are an important part of teaching. Assessments are a good way for teachers to monitor students’ learning and understanding. Knowing students’ level of understanding can help teachers improve students’ learning and guide their instructions. Critically reviewing the scientific development of the testing problem at that time, it is necessary to note the shortcomings that have taken place in theory and practice: - the absolute value of the test control and attempts to replace all other types of control with tests; - lack of appropriate training for the design and use of tests by teachers; - non-compliance with the requirement of one of the most important elements of the validity of the test - the validity of the content; - the unsuccessful formulation of many test questions and their alternatives (several correct answers corresponded to the same question); - inclusion in the test of a large number of questions that required a detailed response; failure to perform the procedure for determining the validity and reliability of the test by statistical methods.
Well I guess I’ll start off this paper by being outright honest. I have never done this type of self-assessment exercise. So I’ll start this paper off with what exactly this type of self-assessment is. These types of self-assessments are meant to help show the individual (me) where my strengths lie and also where my weaknesses are as well so that I may try and lean on my strengths while improving on my own shortcomings. Essentially the Johari Window four regions model that we learned about is a great tool for this assessment. The first region is also known as the open area, which essentially means that this is what is known by the person about him/herself and is also know by others. The second region is known as the blind area in which this is information unknown by the individual but is known by others. Which could be behaviors that an individual does but does not realize that they are doing them. The third window is known as the hidden area. This area is essentially information that only you know about yourself and others do not. The fourth area is known as the unknown area. It’s known as that because this is information that you and others do not know about you. It’s when you take a look at these four areas and see your strengths and/or weaknesses are at and if you allow yourself to become open to feedback you then can improve on your own shortcomings and become a better leader.
Through assessment students and teachers are able to determine the level of mastery a student has achieved with standards taught. Both formative and summative assessment should be purposeful and targeted to gain the most accurate data to drive further instruction (Ainsworth, 2010). While this syllabus does a good job of identifying the need for both formal and informal assessments, the way in which this is communicated does not provide enough detail for understanding. Simply listing assessment types does not give any insight into how these assessments fit in the learning process of this course. While some of the assessments mentioned could be common assessments chosen by the school or district to gain insight into the effectiveness of instruction, the inclusion of authentic assessments is most beneficial to students and demonstrates learning in a context closer to that of a work environment (Rovai, 2004). Unfortunately, this particular course, according to this syllabus, relies heavily on quizzes and traditional tests and essays to form the bulk of assessment opportunities. While other activities, such as formative assessments, journaling and discussions are mentioned as possible avenues for scoring, they are given a very low percentage of the overall grade. For centuries, assessments have been used to determine student knowledge level and understanding. In recent years, testing has become a major topic of debate; some believe testing students is the best way to measure student growth and performance, as well as teacher effectiveness. From the other perspective, some believe that increased standardized testing lacks validity and reliability. Quite often, other elements are not considered such as students with learning disabilities, students with varying socioeconomic status and race, and students testing in their second language. Assessments taken by students with a different first language encounter several issues in addition to language tests such as the TOEFL test or placement tests.
I use assessments to assist me to identify and to develop their learning process. Assessment is not about the final grade, but the learning experience. I would rather have my students know how to look up information and apply knowledge than to memorize it and forget it ten minutes after the test. Learning is a life-long adventure and I want my students to know how to adjust and cope during their adventure. I want my students to have the skills for researching and finding the answer. It is not always that answer which demonstrates learning; it is in the process in which you find the answer that demonstrates learning.
