In today’s world, there are many people who feel the pull of continuing their education by going to college. There are many factors that affect this process, and can either make or break a student’s attempt at academic success. Some of the factors are commonsensical, and others may not be as obvious – especially for returning students who have been out of school for a long period of time. There are many tools available to help students of all backgrounds discover their strengths, weaknesses, skills, and learning styles, all of which will help them prepare for their school routine. One of these tools is the Smarter Measure Assessment, which is an online tool that uses simple questions to measure a student’s readiness for classes. Although …show more content…
The top three highest learning style results were: social (at ten points) and physical and solitary (tied at nine points each). I was surprised at the social learning style result the most. I personally believed that, depending on the subject matter, I tended to focus more on the tasks at hand if I study on my own. However, upon further introspection, I have concluded that I do much better most of the time if I have at least one study partner. I am less likely to take unnecessary breaks, get distracted by my cell phone, or zone out. However, there is a limit to my social learning capabilities: if I have more than 2 partners in my study group, I am inclined to become more distracted and less focused. A group setting also helps me in regards to the physical aspect of my learning style. While visual aids do help me, I am very much a hands on learner. Especially in regards to topics like science, being able to use my hands and sense of touch greatly increases my understanding and retention of the subject matter. This also means that I feel restricted in a traditional lecture style class. I had noticed this about myself, and over the years have employed several tricks to help keep my focus. One of the most successful one I have experienced is also one that is suggested in the assessment results: extensive note taking. I hadn’t thought to employ tricks in my study habits to help with the trapped feeling, and the suggestions provided were very helpful. I have now started to use flash cards, brainstorming diagrams and even educational toys to help with my more difficult classes – like anatomy and physiology. Being able to handle the materials is extremely beneficial, and utilizing different mediums and techniques prevents me from being bored and losing
... a tedious process, but the change can have immense, positive effects for the future college student. The ACT and SAT that supposedly measure a student's learning potential through multiple-choice questions should be replaced by a test of a student's desire to learn determined through the analysis of essays, recommendation letters, and school or community involvement. This change can result in a more academically motivated freshman class. Standardized testing in its current form does not accurately measure most students' learning potential. It does not allow for diversity and creates a huge hurdle for many potential academic achievers. An adjustment to a diverse, open testing format of the ACT or SAT and a stress on the student's other academic accomplishments can accurately measure the student's desire to learn, therefore measuring the student's learning potential.
Even with material being taught incessantly, standardized tests can not accurately measure a student’s ability. The tests are “single-target—meaning that every student, no matter what level of achievement or ability, course selection, or cu...
So, using these long multiple choice exams are what college’s consider to be a reflection of a student’s grades during their first year at college. The test maker itself explains that grade point averages during high school paint a better picture than their tests ("The ACT: Biased, Inaccurate, and Misused" 1). College’s use these standardized tests as a quick measure of ability. However, a test cannot explo...
Our Session Long Project (SLP) for Module 1 transforms the evaluation essay into a job evaluation. The type of job evaluation used in this SLP identifies the responsibilities of the job and bases the individual’s performance on these responsibilities. What does this mean to the employee; it means that if they understand the responsibilities of their job they are better able to perform it to the satisfaction of the evaluator. However employees who are not informed of their responsibilities can invalidate your evaluation process very quickly and wreck havoc in any organization.
Based on my self-reflection, my best learning environment includes little to no sound (though music actually aids in my learning), low lighting, cool temperatures and a relaxed seating arrangement. The emotional aspect of learning involves how structured the learning process is. I prefer high levels of motivation and persistence as well as high amounts of responsibility in my individual work and structure. The sociological aspect of learning preferences involve either working alone or working with others. I prefer to work alone, I don’t want authority watching me in my work and I usually have a very structured system of learning. The physical aspect of learning involves study habits. I prefer to take small breaks in between studying by having a snack. I prefer to study in the evening, and I prefer the afternoon hours in order to complete tasks. Lastly, the psychological aspect involves the way in which we think when processing information. It has been shown that I am an analytical person which means that I like small details. This means that I am a very “left-brain” person who is very reflective when learning new topics
The learning styles test identified me as a tactile-kinesthetic learner, meaning that I learn best by doing, rather than listening or seeing. This means that I need to adapt my studying to methods that correlate with this style. Some of the suggestions given by the Abiator’s active classroom website seemed useful and relevant, such as using flashcards while pacing the room, while others seemed absurd, such as covering my workspace in colored construction paper.
Many of us struggle with properly defining college readiness. Some may say that college readiness is the ability to be able to read and write. Some high schools may even feel they are ready simply because they have gotten their high school diploma; however, according to the ACT activity publication college readiness can be defined by the ability to benchmark on the ACT readiness system. In addition students must also have academic behavior which includes studen...
College success has become a most desirable goal. However, many students struggle through college. In fact, according to the Website Ask.com, approximately 15 percent of college students receive a degree. Because I’m willing to earn a degree like many other successful students, I find that college is the stepping stone to my dream goals. I know that college is difficult, but I realize that attaining my dream of a college education will require me to understand the benefits of what I’m learning, to prepare for obstacles, to seek advice, and to create effective and reasonable strategies will help me achieve my goals.
The Smarter Measure assessments help me focus on areas that need my attention. The assessment shows that my primary learning style is Aural. I use sound and music in my learning environment, music helps me focus. The Life Factor section shows that Skills is a major concern. I think the reason why this is a low score is due to the lack of confidence I have in me. I need to ask my academic advisors for more assistance in regards to tutoring, writing support and study groups. The Individual Attributes section shows that Procrastination is a problem. I need to learn instead of waiting for the deadline, I need to start my assignments immediately. The Technical Competency section shows I need assistances with Internet Competency. I need
Douhitt, 2001). In his paper, Zajonc discusses audience effects and describes numerous studies in which the results supported the hypothesis that individuals will perform exceedingly better on well-learned tasks when in front of an audience than when alone—because an audience has arousal consequences (Zajonc, 1965). However, it was also seen that, when an individual is learning a new task, the presence of spectators will significantly hinder their ability to learn. Therefore, it can be asserted that, for a student to be most successful, he/she should study alone in an isolated setting, yet, when it comes time to take the exam, he/she should be in the presence of many other students.
Improving the SAT and ACT with better academic tests for a student’s academic skills is a must, but in that same scenario, it should predict and measure success better than transcripts and last until a few years after college graduation. By improving their tests in this way, the SAT would be much more useful and relevant to colleges by their graduates’ successes. It would make colleges analyze their applicants more thoroughly and be
Like I said previously, I am a people person and I learn better in a classroom setting, but in this case there were no face to face interaction. Most of my learning was either researching and reading, which is not my strong point, but through out this quarter I actually enjoyed reading the books we were required to read. I have learned through out this course that it is very important to learn all four types of learning styles. I Prefer to learn socially within a group of people and by trial and error until I learn the proper way of doing things, but I also like observation and cognitively but they are not my strong points. This quarter and probably through out my degree if I stay in this distant learning program I will be reading a lot, and I do not mind that. Even though reading is not my best learning style, but I must learn how to do it if I want to be successful in this degree. In life we are going to have use all four of these styles of learning( Courage and Calling Chap 9). Not only have I pushed my boundaries by expanding my learning styles. By forcing myself to read and writing more, I have been prone to like reading and writing more often. I have also learned how to look a situations in a different perspective and some sort of manage my time better. Because in the end we all must be able to be flexible and balance our time our properly,But how do we incorporate these different learning styles into our
The results from my personal learning test did not surprise me due to the knowledge I have of myself and the ways I learn. When looking at the preference between learning styles, my personal choice would have to be active learning because I understand material and remember aspects of the content better when doing an activity. Reflective learning is not for me because I like to collaborate ideas with other classmates and create one common idea of what is happening. Although I do like to do most activities in a group, there are time in my academic career where reflective learning is what I preferred to do since I wanted to work alone and get the work done how I wanted it. Now that I have developed an active learning personality, my knowledge of myself and other people have grown. After I took the online test, my results stated that my preference for active learning matched my learning style very well. Active learning received my highest score which showed that I am an active learner which I already knew. As I have come to realization, college does not always benefit the active learning personality. One thing that Richard M. Felder states in his paper Learning Styles and Strategies, “study in a group in which the members take turns explaining different topics to each other then work with others to guess what you will be asked on the next test and figure out how you will answer the questions.” (Felder). With this tip, I can utilize my active learning style and get the same amount of work and studying done while benefitting my preference for
Academic success is becoming increasingly important in today’s society because most occupations now require a degree of some kind before a job applicant will even be considered. For that reason, academic performance has a considerable impact on a student’s life and whether or not he or she is able to accomplish future career goals. There are many factors that can influence academic performance of a college student, including student personality traits and life circumstances. Life circumstances are sometimes out of a student’s control, but if a student was able to recognize a quality of his or her personality that was inhibiting academic performance, then he or she could possibly make an effort to
With the ever-increasing standards of perfection placed on today’s youth, teens are feeling the pressure to push themselves harder and harder in order to keep up. In May 2016, the math and science sections of the ACT were revised to be more challenging, necessitating more advanced courses for students who hope to get a good score--a score which for many students, feels like a make or break result. Yet one test, however well designed, cannot accurately measure the intelligence of so many unique individuals. An aptitude for different subjects or styles of learning does not make a student less brilliant than his or her peers.
