When a song drifts into your ears, what do you think? Do you listen without thinking about the true meanings of the words? In All Star, the average listener will not think much of its rather goofy lyrics. Most of the time they will think about all the Shrek related media and the spin offs that have been created from the song. It has never been taken seriously. The moment the words “Somebody once told me” are played, most will laugh. The song “All Star” by Smashmouth is a song with deep reflections about life.
In All Star by Smash Mouth, a man goes through his life in ignorance. He is the all star of his life, which is where the title is drawn from. In the first stanza, he says “he ain’t the sharpest tool in the shed”. In the next lines, he is confused by the action a girl. Her fingers are in the shape of an L, placed on her forehead. She is mocking him for being a “loser”, but he does not realize it. He says how the years do not stop coming in the second stanza, describing how he fell to the ground when he gave into the rules. He encourages the reader or listener to break the rules, or they will not enjoy life as much as they should. These two stanzas set the theme for the rest of the song. He tries to find the good in everything, saying in the chorus that “all that glitters is gold”. He says “So what's

The line “Didn't make sense not to live for fun” shows how relaxed the speaker is. He does not want to live a boring life, questioning why society is the way it is. It is a fun song, that is the whole basis of it. The speaker just wants to have a fun and easy life. He does not want to live by the standards of others or go through life the same way as everyone else. All he wants is it to be his life and his life alone. He is the All Star of his life. He is the rockstar playing the song of his individuality. The mood of the song never dips, leaving it as a relaxed, carefree, and fun
The first stanza describes the depth of despair that the speaker is feeling, without further explanation on its causes. The short length of the lines add a sense of incompleteness and hesitance the speaker feels towards his/ her emotions. This is successful in sparking the interest of the readers, as it makes the readers wonder about the events that lead to these emotions. The second and third stanza describe the agony the speaker is in, and the long lines work to add a sense of longing and the outpouring emotion the speaker is struggling with. The last stanza, again structured with short lines, finally reveals the speaker 's innermost desire to "make love" to the person the speaker is in love
The analysis of this song lead me to actually dislike the song because I found that my first impression of the song was much different than after analyzing it for weeks. I love the bands music but I just don't like this one particular song. I guess there are many ways to interpret this song but I feel as if the song is way to deep in thought for a singer such as Dave Matthews. As Dave stated at one of his concerts, "Some people drink, and some don't; some people like to smoke a bowl, and some don't. Some people do and some people don't but its ok `cause it was ment to be that way." Dave Matthews is no Wordsworth, but its ok because it was meant to be that way!
The fact that once time is gone, it’s gone for good. There is no making up for lost time, and you cannot change what you didn’t do. Enjoy life while you can because there is no making up for it when you are no longer busy. It’s easy to hear and listen to advice, but it is much more difficult to follow through with advice in the moment. The song uses the imagery of a man’s life passing by and how it has influences his son’s
In the beginning, before any lyrics are sung, the music starts off slow and very inviting. The purpose of this to relieve yourself and just be able to sit back and take in everything he is about to say, and take something away from this song to help the listener for the days to come. The first message the speaker tries to convey comes from the first two lines, “You know there’s a light
These lyrics send a message of how at first he was being someone who he wasn’t but then eventually found out who he actually was. He grew up living in a society where a person couldn’t be their own individual self and everything was done collectively. He never knew about individualism because of the fact he’s been in a collective environment. After learning about the Unmentionable Times and the forbidden word “I”, he knew at that moment who he really was. “I tried to be someone else/ I know now this is who I really am inside,” are two lines that can be used that momen...
He discusses how his mom got him christmas presents and how he was shocked due to being from a very poor family due to not having the advantage of being white. He continues to say how his emotions are pouring out of him as in he is letting all of the stuff that he has gone through that was hard out and he is ready to let it all out for the best of his health. He mainly discusses the pain he has gone through and how it is hard growing up as a young black male. After this main song, he continues to open up on how he coped with this heartache that he has gone through.
This piece doesn’t have a very significant meaning to me personally but in 1971 the issues raised in the song would’ve related to many people living in America in that time. The upbeat feel of the song does not relate to the controversial lyrics being sung. The break towards the end of the song is the only section that effectively conveys the despair that Gaye is feeling. The lyrics ‘this aint living,’ portray how upset he is at what is going on in the world and it demonstrates his concern. I would usually pair the funky beat of this song up with an enjoyable set of lyrics but Gaye has done the complete opposite which creates create contrast in the song. I believe that Marvin Gaye has succeeded in getting his message across and the techniques he has used help this significantly.
Reading the lyrics makes it seem like the song is a very depressing story about the writer’s life and how he is lost and does not know what to do with his life. At the beginning of the song the singer states, “Some nights I stay up cashing in my bad luck / Some nights I call it a draw” (1-2). The singer suggests that he is a gambler and that some nights he “cashes in his bad luck”, meaning he gambles his money away, and some nights he calls it a draw, meaning he went even. The song then states, “Some Nights I wish that my lips could build a castle / Some nights ...
The song depicts the energy and the adrenaline the main character gets from racing, but it also shows how it affects his girlfriend. This song depicts a choice the man has to make. Live the life a racecar driver or set aside his dream and give his girlfriend the ability to have the American Dream. The racecar life was not ideal to the girlfriend and Springsteen sings about her sadness and desperation of living the life of a racecar divers girlfriend. The girl craves to live a normal life, or the American Dream, but her boyfriend ultimately has to decide if he wants to sacrifice his dream to give his girlfriend hers. Springsteen sings, “But all of her pretty dreams are torn,” clearly show how concerned and broken this girl is because she craves a different lifestyle (“Racing Streets”). The main character in this song must sacrifice something in order to keep his girlfriend happy, or the girlfriend has to sacrifice a normal life to assure happiness of her boyfriend. Overall, someone must sacrifice his or her
In the first stanza, first line; I saw two trees embracing, this means that there is a couple that is in love. In the second and third line we see that the male is weaker “one leaned on the other, as if to throw her down” and in the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh line we notice that the female has the strength, willpower and is dominating. In the second stanza, line one, two and three we see that the female being dominant makes the male feel broken and intimidated. In line four “the most wind-warped, you could see”, hear we see that there is a major problem between the two.
The man feels abandoned in a corner and he drinks for the sadness he feels. While drinking, he tells himself I do not understand why you left me, if I know she loved me, so if you ever regret your decision he will be waiting for you. Basically, the man feels broken emotionally because the women he loved, left him for no reason. This song to me is not a dancing song, however the song is more about remembering your ex-wife, ex-girlfriend or ex husband and ex-boyfriend. For me personally, this song reminds me of drinking, the title literally means bitter shots of liquor. The way the song shares the hurt the man feels by the women that left him. I could almost picture a man sitting at a bar drinking to his ex saying, “I’m drinking because of you, you caused this”. I could picture that scene in my head because I have seen my friends in Mexico and my cousins in Mexico do
He sends a message to those who can not enjoy life through constantly working, to just relax and stop worrying about their goals and the what the future
The second verse of the song states, “but I ain’t out of control, just livin’ by my word,” and that represents my free-spirited attitude towards life; I like to see all aspects of life as what they are objectively, and I don’t perceive different people, places, or things as “strange,” since they exist. The uppermost color of my artwork is yellow; that color is representative of imagination, and I personally do not believe in a definition of “normal.” The chorus states, “it doesn’t matter now what happens, I will never give up the fight,” which represents my resiliency towards blunders, adversity, and challenging situations. In fact, the median color of my artwork is orange, which is a color that represents energy and enthusiasm. The third verse states, “where do I stop, it’s all a blur and so unclear,” which represents my indecisiveness regarding long-term life plans.
